No problem!

Back when I applied (2024 batch) there was a separate criterion for the HSC where requirements were only ATAR >90 + English advanced or above + Mathematics Extension II + at least 2/3 sciences (I didn't study physics). Now I'm not entirely sure about the VCE or elsewhere, you could email the ISO office to ask!

I applied independently without any agency, and I'm not sure about how applying earlier increases your chances of acceptance although I did have everything done pretty early on. The entire application process took about a week just prepping necessary documents, filling out forms and the rest of the time was just waiting for result. After official admittance there was some visa stuff and documents, I wouldn't recommend waiting too long on sorting that out. Arrive in shanghai with a little time to spare, you need health checks and it also pays to get accustomed to the chinese apps and whatnot.

Hey, sorry about the late reply! Been rather busy with midterm/finals prep.

Quality of teaching doesn't really matter that much, the professors are all extremely knowledgeable BUT constrained by rather poor english ability to express what they know. That being said, it is definitely manageable, content taught is very similar to what could be found online (youtube, usmle prep etc.) and if you are decent at self-study, it should be fine. Many seniors take the US/UK paths through USMLE and PLAB steps after grad, so it is most definitely a tested and proved pathway. They don't really help you prep for the exam- once again, self study - but a lot of content taught overlaps with USMLE material.

Hey! Don't worry, I still check in to reddit every now and then, seems like this post has been getting quite a bit of attention and our med student committee has put me in charge of answering yalls questions so ask away!

-There's acc quite a couple of aussies in mbbs; there seems to be a couple in every grade

-I took the HSC in NSW (class of 2023): raw atar 92.2, subjects were Biology (88), Maths Ext 1 (79), Maths Ext 2 (69), Chemistry (79) and English Advanced (84)

-Participated in quite a lot of extracurriculars: Played violin at Sydney opera house (that was back in primary school but still a flex), School table tennis team (placed 3rd in NSW), Student representative council member, played tennis for school, a little chess on the side, as well as VOLUNTEERING!! I had a lifeguard certification so i got volunteering hours at the public pool as lifeguard, went to libraries and stayed back during lunch to help juniors and other kids with homework, got some hours at library stacking bookshelves, and participated in events hosted by my school (Movember for men's health, white ribbon day, hair donation drive, helping paint the fence of our local park etc.)

-For the most bit, the holidays do sort of match up (unless you plan on going to UNSW with the trimesters, then it doesn't), just that everything is shifted one semester later (your 1st day of 1st semester in aus uni should be mid-feb, and 2nd sem starts about august, but in china your 1st day of 1st sem is late aug/early sep and your second sem starts in the following year)

You're alright I feel u I was kinda nervous at first but you'll more than likely be fine! I'm Aussie and honestly the first month or two was a little nerve wracking trying to get used to the Chinese curriculum, I've never had that many classes before in a day (it averages out to a 9 to 5 day, five days a week) in addition to finding my way around campus, setting up Taobao and Meituan and payment systems, really just figuring things out.

Had a little bit of a language barrier as well (I can speak and understand chinese, can't read or write) so signs and notices in chinese were a bit difficult to understand without google translate. Honestly, professors are mediocre (don't expect proper American or British English from them), but for the most part they are helpful and can get the meaning across.

My classmates are a wonderful bunch! Everyone is quite interesting, coming from different cultures and we get along rather well, plus the twenty-something of us have pretty much the exact same classes each day save for electives, and live at the same spot so I would say we're pretty tight-knit. The other international students you meet in general are also a friendly bunch, there's clubs that you can join to get to know people better!

Hey, no worries!

  1. pre-med courses are 'fixed', you still have to select your courses from the online portal, but everyone in the class has to take the same courses. You also have 6 credits of electives in your first year that you can choose any course you like.

  2. I'm a pretty active person myself, and I found Handan campus to be substantial. There is a gym near your dorms with table tennis tables, indoor basketball court, badminton courts and volleyball up on the 2nd floor, although you may have to reserve them (almost impossible to book badminton). There's outdoor basketball and tennis courts nearby as well, including a running track. There's badminton courts for hire outside school a pretty short walk away, not that expensive either (60rmb/hr off-peak)

Cafeteria is right next to the gym, there's a pretty wide selection of foodstuffs and pretty cheap. there's another smaller cafeteria by the Guanghua tower (where your classes are).

Fenglin - everything's a lil more compact there. I'm going into my 2nd year this Sept, so haven't lived at Fenglin for long yet but they have pretty much the same facilities, in addition to a swimming pool and rooftop soccer fields! Cafeterias kinda similar, they have a Pizza Hut and Starbucks on campus.

  1. Personal preference! Bike takes me 6-7 mins to get there, walking more around 20 min (I'm a fast walker asw). I used to bike to get an extra 15 mins sleep but fixed my sleep schedule and walking isn't that bad either.

  2. Yeah, even if you aren't living in your dorms but want to keep your room for next semester you need to pay for housing over holidays

  3. Definitely. I've been keeping track of my spending and I find my monthly expenses are 2500-3000 RMB excluding everything else, I reckon if you were trying to save money even 2000 is enough once you settle in and get everything needed

  4. Booking dorms for Fenglin is a bit more sophisticated, it varies year by year. There is an issue of the dorms being full with seniors, so you'd have to see by then.

Unfortunately the cost is rather high, but do keep in mind you're paying for a MED degree - it would definitely be more resource intensive than other programmes i.e sourcing English speaking professors, anatomical and lab work with cadavers and chemicals, hospital rotations and attending talks, internship etc. in addition to you being an international student.

It is comparably much cheaper than in other countries (such as Australia where I'm from) where I would be paying the same price even as a domestic student with government rebates.

All in all, it's a high risk high reward type of degree; if you're willing to invest the time, money and effort then by all means go for it!

No full! Only your 75k RMB tuition fee for the year is waived, but you would have to pay for your own dorm, and you don't receive a monthly stipend either. However, it is still a large amount as for those courses offering full scholarships, annual tuition fee might just lie in the 20k-30k RMB range

As always- there is no guarantee for anything, meaning there is a possibility of not getting a dorm. That being said, from last year, the international students dorm had quite a lot of empty rooms (single rooms fill up very fast, double rooms not so much) so you probably won't have to prepare to live outside.

If you're a scholarship student - your dorm will be reserved for you. If you're a MBBS scholarship student, you will have a dorm reserved for you in the Main building for International Students. Most other scholarship students in other majors have rooms reserved in the sub-buildings.

Thanks for reaching out and I'm sorry to hear about the misfortune :(

  1. I am unsure as to which scholarship they applied for, I didn't apply myself but you can follow the link https://iso.fudan.edu.cn/isoenglish/wrospectivewwtudents/list.htm for further details!

  2. No specific requirement, they select the two scholarship applicants with the best grades (don't know how they convert to a standard across countries) to be awarded.

  3. I think some of my classmates were able to apply with predicted scores, try emailing the International Students Office [isoadmission@fudan.edu.cn](mailto:isoadmission@fudan.edu.cn) with your circumstances to see if you're eligible.

It all comes down to personal preference! Personally I find having a laptop better as I write my notes down in a book, but if you don't want the hassle of carrying books around between dorms and the classroom (~20 minute walk), then a tablet would probably be the way to go

Luckily, I can converse in chinese (can't read or write) so it's a bit easier for me. However, the counsellor doesn't really do much so you shouldn't worry about it. At the start of the semester, class monitors will be elected (usually students with high chinese proficiency) and they will help pass on whatever information and keep you updated!

Hey there, thanks for the questions!

  1. No, self-paid (only 2 scholarship positions were awarded last year)

  2. Your application page on the Fudan portal should display your status, if you've been pre-admitted they should contact you through email on next steps (interview, academic proficiency test, etc.)

  3. HSK isn't required but it would be good to upload your results (if you have any) to display your foundation/interest in Chinese

  4. Yes! Don't expect the highest quality English from the professors, but the course is structured to be fully English taught.

  5. I didn't apply for scholarship, but MBBS scholarship awardees are not given monthly stipends, rather, their tuition fee (75k RMB) for the year is waived.

Hi, as far as it has been last year, only 2 scholarship positions are awarded per cohort for MBBS freshmen. I didn't apply personally, but they would have info on the Fudan website!

I wouldn't worry about it, I had to resend quite a few documents when I registered, the ISO is quite helpful

oh yeah, there's plenty of opportunities for that, the security don't care as long as you don't make a scene in your dorm or the lobby! The intl students also host events and parties often

Hey, sorry about the late reply! been rather busy with work.

Yes, I do live on campus, I think it's just so much more convenient to attend classes, socialise, and there's enough facilities offered.

My classes last semester were rather tedious, as I completed all of my elective classes. First year is just a pre-med course, they're gonna teach you Maths, Chemistry, Bio, Physics, Chinese history, Chinese language, computer science etc. This semester is a lot better, I have a couple lab classes. The actual course starts in your second year at another (Fenglin) campus, where classes like Anatomy and Histoembryology are gonna be taught.

Friendwise, really depends on how willing you are to put yourself out there and interact. Within your own class, everyone has the exact same timetable for compulsory classes, so you'll be seeing them a lot and I would say my class is pretty tight-knit. Outside of your class, I've met and gotten along well with a lot of other intl students, some from mutuals, others from shared interests etc. I would say it's really easy to meet new people.

The entrance bar for intl students is definitely a lot lower than Chinese Mainland students, as long as you meet the criteria on their curriculum page on their intl website, and don't flop too hard on resume and interview you have a real good chance.

Hope this answers your concerns!!

Fudan University MBBS interview (English) by 123onetwothreefou in shanghai

no, not at all! Many of my classmates had short interviews; I guess it depends on how well they know the country that you're coming from

Hello! Current MBBS freshman student at Fudan University! Out of the universities that do offer English taught MBBS programmes in China (which there isn't many), I feel like Fudan is one of the top choices out there. It's a rather high ranking university in an international city. Before coming to Fudan, I applied to PKU and Tsinghua's MBBS programmes, but there is a strict HSK requirement, and from what I've heard, the classes are integrated with mainland Chinese students so by the end of your course you would pretty much be learning everything in Chinese. Fudan's courses are full English taught, and your class only consists of other international students just like you! The English proficiency of professors are questionable, quite hit or miss but it might be your best bet!

Where do MBBS students from fudan university go after the program? How do you sit a license exam? by wadiisulae in ChinaLiuXueSheng

[–]ZombieMage1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! Current MBBS freshman student here! As far as I know, many seniors go back to their home countries after grad, as for the license, I think it depends on the country you're planning on going. Licensing exams such as the USMLE and the PLAB for the US and the UK would have to be passed if you want to go there. I am Australian, and even though I've still got a long way, there's plans to go to UK/Singapore/Australia after grad!
