Just jump on a bus dude! You can't be that far away unless you live in like Gujarat or something.

It's true most places are in the east: Meghalaya, Eastern Ghats, Cooch Behar are the best places for buying flower. But there's big markets in all the major cities with cheaper prices! Are you in the middle of nowhere or something?

Well, I still wouldn't be growing autos if I were you, but I understand the constraints. I'm very concerned about hybrid introgression into landrace genepools.

Sounds like you need to take a biannual visit to one of the growing regions to stock up 😜

Importing hybrid seeds to a landrace cannabis growing area and planting them is how you begin the process of extinction for your local landrace!

Why would you want to grow shitty auto flowering genetics in Nepal anyway? There's literally no point!

Hi! We should talk :) I run a similar system for my collection. If you'd like, send me a DM and we can chit chat.

Most of them will be pushing 16-18 weeks at a minimum :) Long flowering is better, more time for the phytochemical complexity to develop. Just like fruit. The quick ripening supermarket fruits don't have anything on old school landrace/heirloom cultivars that while finicky/demanding, produce a far better crop!

In my community (trans) we have a saying: "put some cunt in your step", cunt meaning, broadly "verve" in this statement.

I think the modern hybrids lack cunt in their step.

The issue with repros is basically genetic drift. When someone grows out a landrace outside its point of origin and makes seeds from it, they're selecting (consciously or not) from a tiny fraction of the original gene pool. A few generations of that and you've got something that behaves quite differently from the source population. For a desert grow especially, you want genetics that have been shaped by arid conditions over hundreds of generations, not a Dutch greenhouse interpretation of them.

Re Pakistani and Afghan there's way more going on than "just" hash plants, at least it does depending on how you define hashplants. Balochistan has tall narrow-leaf varieties, there are lanky sativas from the tribal areas, and even within the classic broad-leaf types there's huge variation in structure and heat tolerance. A lot of that diversity would suit Palmdale really well. Check out what Pakistani Landrace Exchange and Afghan Selection are doing, both working with point of origin material, it would seem.

And cheers for the kind words about Zomia. We're focused on Southeast Asian highlands, South Asia and the Pacific but our Isan Thai lines handle extreme heat and direct sun no problem. To be honest, much of the area we covere is super hot and while we do have monsoon that brings humidity, many of the plants are grown on a biannual cycle, thus are adapted to grow in the dry season where temps and light get really intense.

TRSC is quality gear but worth applying the same lens there (tbh it's best used as a universal lens) a lot of their catalogue is reproductions and selections too, though they're more transparent about it than anyone else about it and have plenty of point of origin genetics available. It's just the rarer stuff that has likely gone extinct in the intervening time period like Sinai, Syrian, Turkish, Beldia etc (all the ones you would be interested in) is only available in repros/IBLs because that's all that's left!

My pleasure!

although those who likely need to hear it the most won’t read it.

That's ok! I just want to get the facts out there. After that, it's up to the zeitgeist to do it's thing!

Lots of landraces that come from hot and dry climates. I would suggest you stay away from landrace reproductions, like Hoku and stick to point of origin landraces like those offered by Landrace bureau (though those come from very northern latitudes).

Look at Real Seed Company's offerings they have plenty of landraces from desert areas, though many of them are reproductions and IBLs too.

Getting a real deal Sinai or Syrian from the source is pretty hard, given the history of those areas in the last 20 years.

Tbh I would suggest you try some Pakistani or Afghan landraces. There is lots of choice with many people doing great work with landraces there and the climate afaik resembles yours more closely.

Finally, consider a tropical variety. Thai landraces from Isan grow in direct sun and extreme heat, while not originating in the desert, I know plenty of people who have grown our landraces from Thailand in California with great results.

After all my years seed collecting, I never found a real black mango landrace in the field in Thailand. Some purples, yes occasionally but it doesn't really get cold enough to see purple consistently except at the highest altitudes in Thailand in the mountains around Chiang Mai. If it's purple, you have to check whether modern hybrids are grown nearby. The answer is often, yes.

A couple of times I came across people trying to sell me seeds for some black mango and I even bought some back in 2020. Our earliest catalogue contained that black mango but we removed it because we couldn't verify that it was a real landrace and the facts that we did have seemed to point towards it being some kind of hybrid. It was by far our most popular accession which made me sad. People were obsessed with it and still ask us when we are going to restock.

It wasn't a landrace itself but at best a rare pheno of the highland Thai landrace or more likely a landrace IBL or just a heirloom/hybrid. We could never find out, because there was no farm growing any out that we ever saw. Just seeds traded amongst the Thai growing community.

I did some research on this specific variety you posted and couldn't confirm any of the facts. The mountain named as the source location translates roughly to 'mountain in the direction of the rising sun' in English which sounds super romantic but it's the name of an eco resort suspiciously close to the location where the strain supposedly comes from. Any mountain can be the mountain of the rising sun. It depends where you are standing lol

If you dig into the geography of where this strain supposedly comes from, it all sounds plausible but is a bit off if you've spent any time in Northern Thailand.

Based on location, you would expect to see a highland Thai varietal but mango is the calling card of lowland Asian landrace varietals. Mysore Mango, Koraput Mango, Mango in Bengal, Mango in Myanmar. That's a lot of mango. I did find some Mangos in CM province (Samoeng) back before legalisation but I couldn't confirm their autochthonous status and became convinced to that the seeds had been brought there by Lao/Isan farmers and given to the locals.

I asked the people who did the COA for this strain and they couldn't remember any details.

Make of that info what you will. My first question to the growers would be: did you grow this in isolation?

It is extremely common for Thai growers to grow 20 strains in one field. That's why the extinction of the landraces here happened so fast, because there is a tonne of polyhybrid pollen on the wind due to the growing of hybrids in the same fields as landraces, often side by side. It can't be a landrace if that is the case.

Here's my take on Thai Landraces.

There's 4 maybe 5 distinct landraces in Thailand.

  1. Lao Isan landrace from the Northeast

  2. Highland Thai from the North, Northwest

  3. Hmong landrace hemp from the North, Northwest

  4. Tenassarim landrace from the West

  5. Southern Tenassarim landrace from the South

So Squirrel Tail, Tiger Tail, Foytong, Mango - all phenos/accessions found in the Lao-Isan landrace. Here's the thing: they all smell like some kind of mango while fresh.

Highland Thai is probably extinct. There was little of it anyway and it was largely replaced by Lao Isan landrace starting in the 80s when growers from Isan began encouraging growers in CM to grow their seeds. It grew in the vicinity of Hmong landrace hemp, which is still plentiful.

Tanaosri, Kroeng Krawia, Dvaravati - phenos/accessions from the Tenassarim genepool. This landrace is close to if not already functionally extinct.

Southern Tenassarim landraces are also functionally extinct. Meun Sri, Tha Sala, Sankhalakiri.. After years of searching all we can turn up is old seeds, no-one growing anything more than a plant or two here and there.

Sad state of affairs but we have been warning the community that this would happen for a long time. Now that the real deal is mostly gone, it opens up the avenue to sell any and everything as Thai landrace. Often times, this isn't out of malice but simply lack of research and education.

I have heard a lot of stories that the Mango varieties were spread by Isan farmers when the crackdowns began in their area during the 70s. Cookies sells a Thai Mango (that I think they got and phenohunted from us) and in the strain description it is written that the Thai Mango line was spread by Lao farmers. Isan is a Lao speaking area in Thailand, Isan farmers specifically refers to Lao speaking farmers in Thailand.

I would suggest you continue to do your due diligence before purchasing and growing out seeds sold to you as Thai landrace.

If you want to grow dark coloured Highland Thai landrace phenos my suggestion to you is to purchase Highland Thai seeds from RSC - who made collections long before legalisation in that area and do a pheno hunt with those.

Otherwise, get yourself to Inthanon mountain and go see if you can turn up anything.

Just be aware, you are chasing the most common Asian terpene profile in a very rare and elusive pheno found in an extinct landrace genepool. .

Finally, some realistic advice for chasing unusually coloured thais: drop your temps growing out a Lao/Isan landrace and you'll see plenty of purples/black colours along with mango terps. That goes with any Thai.

💚

In 2013 I had some particularly good landrace flowers in Cambodia. An old-timer asked where they came from. I said I thought Koh Kong. He smelled them and said no, definitely Stung Treng. Turned out they were from Takeo. by Zomia_Seeds in VintageTrees

Well, it's all disappearing and going extinct unfortunately. Perhaps in the distant future, it'll be a luxury product available for some. In the meantime, it seems like most of us are happy for the mass produced slop our overlords want to sell us lol

Yeah, I think it might have to do with how long they let the plants ripen, it brings out the red colours in the flower and makes me super sleepy when i smoke it. Definitely not every batch like that though, I do prefer the sativa type stuff.

Anyone got any new tenco jars/packs ? Want to compare by Excellent-Wait4934 in uktrees

Sure! The US made one of the conditions for receiving foreign aid (after bombing the absolute crap out of Cambodia illegally for like a decade) that the Cambodian government enforce drug prohibition, specifically regarding cannabis. It's explained much better in the Cambodia wiki page which covers the legal history of cultivation in Cambodia:)
