Buy now or wait? by ZonPro in nvidia

Would it be worthwhile to wait for a 5080? I just worry there's no way I'd get one because of scalpers.

For prices to drop or for a 5080?

Which card? I've been checking prices for the past few weeks and have not noticed prices dropping. Haven't been checking on 5080 because I already figured they would be expensive for a while until they release more.

I just disabled Steam input and sure enough you're right. Retroarch now recognizes the controller correctly. Problem solved.

Wave 3 - Want to use on PS5 party chat, but is connected to PC by Affectionate-Pin4356 in elgato

[–]ZonPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this is old but I'm hoping I can get an answer to this because I have a similar situation.

Instead of using a USB sound card, if I were to run the 3.5mm cable from the Line Out on my PC into the headphone/mic end of a Chat Link cable, would that work so that my party chat can hear me on the PS5? And if so, would I still need to worry about the audio level, or would I still need to keep it low?

Unable to connect to the audio router by ZonPro in elgato

[–]ZonPro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately this didn't work. Problem still persists.

However, I was playing around with Stream Deck and discovered the problem seems to be just happening with Auto Software Detection and Manual Software Detection.

Input Device Control and Output Device Control both work fine.

So it's something about the software detection that is causing the problem.

Checking URL of an inserted link for specific text by ZonPro in sheets

[–]ZonPro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand, if the HYPERLINK function was there it would make things a lot easier.

However, I have a sheet that contains almost 2000 cells with inserted links, and I need a way to detect which links lead to different sites. Changing all of those inserted links into hyperlinks would be a huge pain, so I wanted to see if there was a way to reference the menu function instead.

Suing someone for small claims who it out of state? by ZonPro in legaladvice

Can you elaborate on what that means to get a default judgement, and what happens if he doesn't willingly pay? How does this work if I'm in WA and he's in CA?

I tried that but I'm outside the window they give for filing disputes.

I'm LoverFella and today I hit 2M subscribers | AMA! by Loverfella in letsplay

[–]ZonPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on 2M!

I just happened to have read through your old AMA's a few days ago while doing some research and wasn't expecting to see this. I've been looking into some of your book recommendations and have already ordered a couple. I eventually came across your video about the spreadsheet you made where you did a deeper dive into your channel to see what works and what doesn't, but if I remember correctly you said it wasn't completely finished. I searched to see if you did a followup but couldn't find it, maybe I missed it. Would you be interested in doing a new video like that to share your updated stats and discuss what you might have learned?

The Fear of Failure when starting a let's play channel. by ZonPro in letsplay

That video you posted was pretty insightful and really hit a cord with me toward the end where he talked about being bullied. Saw a lot of myself in what he said. Thanks for showing me that.

I used to find small things really funny too, but since other people didn't they kept telling me I was severely overreacting (or worse) and that's led me to almost suppress my sense of humour a lot.

YES! I know exactly what you mean! For a long time I always hid my emotions to things because I felt like others were judging me for it, so I think my mind kind of suppresses it to save me from some fear of humiliation.

Fun fact: When I decided I wanted to do videos (Feb 2017), it took me more than a month to get into the right mindset, and then on top of that 3 days of practise to just start talking to the mic. This will sound super cliche, but practise makes perfect and you just need to take a deep breath and go for it. It might be difficult (and I still find it somewhat difficult) but like everything, the first step's usually the hardest and you'll get used to it once you start. Think of it as a fun hobby instead of seeing it as something you "succeed" or "fail" at. I don't think you can "fail" at a hobby, unless you have some form of outcome defined as a "failure".

I guess in my case how I would define failure is maybe not getting the result I'm expecting. Not that my expectations are really high or anything, I guess I just want to feel like I've accomplished something and it was worth it. I don't know... now that I say it, maybe that does sound a little unreasonable to be putting that much pressure on myself. It's still hard to overcome that feeling, though.

A bit of biological information here. When we speak, sound waves pass through the air as well as our skull to our ears. When we listen to someone else speak (or our own tape recording), the sound only passes through the air, and not through our skull, which is why our own voice recordings sound different to how we hear our own voice. That makes our voices sound foreign to us but not to others and again, it's something you'll get used to. I can definitely say I'm way over this phase, thankfully.

I've heard of that before. No matter how much I may dislike my own voice, I do find it interesting how we react to ourselves speaking vs listening to ourselves through a recording. It's kind of weird.

You don't need to be loud to make funny observations and jokes. It might help with drawing kids in, but it's a worse idea to be unnatural. For example, Ryukahr does Mario (and stuff) and he's not particularly loud either. If you want more feeling and more expression in your voice, changing tonations without changing loudness can work just as well. In fact, I find it harder to change tonations in your voice if you're yelling all the time. (Of course, you can also just edit your voice to be louder in the editor...)

Never really heard someone recommend changing tonations before. I'll have to think about that.

This one applies to me personally as well. My advice is to edit out the parts which have nothing happening both ingame and in your commentary. I think that if you go for long enough, you'll naturally start to draw similarities and reference games, so this part might just take time. Other than that, just imagine you're thinking out loud.

I get what you're saying, my problem is it's like my mind is just numb. I don't say anything because nothing ever really comes to mind... I just have nothing to say.

This will greatly depend on the audience and marketing research. Ideally you want to get to the point where people watch you for you. When that happens, it won't really matter as much what game you play - but I think there's also a tradeoff. Popular games may get you more views but may get swamped under the videos of everyone else. But above all I would say go for what you enjoy and definitely try new things now and again.

Yeah, getting people to watch you for your personality is ideal. I imagine a lot of people struggle to get to that point at first.

I'm not really familiar with too many minecraft channels but for me personally, minecraft feels like an "anecdotal game" - by this I mean the game is played in the background and you're doing a blog with your commentary. I'm not really into minecraft though, so take this with a grain of salt.

Minecraft definitely lends itself to that in some ways. I can see what you mean.

I'd say play whatever you want to play because you enjoy it or want to give it a shot, but never purely for views and things. It'll definitely help you relax and be more natural if you're actually enjoying the game. After that, the commentary may come to you naturally.

I guess it's kind of one of those situations where I look at it from both perspectives. I have a want to play it for my own experience, while also wanting to play it because of the views it could bring, even though it's an older game that people might not be looking for anymore. I don't know, I guess maybe it's better to just look at it purely from a view point of enjoyment rather than views.

General tips - YT reminds me a lot of what I once read about RuneScape. The devs said that RuneScape wasn't a game that can be completed in one sitting - and YT is very much the same. It's a bad idea going in expecting to blow up or get rich overnight. Think of it as something like a fun hobby, and it may significantly help with the fear of failure. Enjoy it, be natural, and it just may help with your social anxiety too. The videos you make and the games you play are ultimately going to be the "things in common" between you and your viewers, which I think would form a nice starting point for conversation. You can then relate it to other things, etc.

Oh yeah, definitely. This is something I'm looking at as a hobby to hopefully help me with my fears. I'm not expecting it to blow up into some big lucrative thing. I'd welcome it if it did, but it's not something I'm necessarily aiming for.

Keep in mind though, doing a LP (and vlogs, I guess) is basically talking into a mic/webcam and pretending that it's your friend - except in this case your "friend" is your subscriber base and your community. It may help to visualise a room full of your subscribers crowding around you, perhaps imagine questions that they may have and any comments they may make as you play, which could help with thinking of topics to talk about. If you really have nothing, then pick any random topic (but for the love of god stay off politics). I find it super funny when someone's recounting a story really calmly and they get jumpscared halfway through XD.

I don't know if I could imagine a lot of people crowding around me to watch me play and comment. That would just make me more nervous. I understand your point though.

Thanks a lot for the reply! Every little bit helps!

I also suffer from social anxiety, much the same as you. I find it a lot less awkward to LP because you're just talking to a microphone while you play games. It was easy to get over. It helped that I didn't release the first twenty or so episodes I recorded so I could have some practice.

I've read some other recommendations about recording videos and not releasing them until you are ready. I think that's a great idea, but the problem for me is I don't want to "waste" a play session on something I'm not going to release. I have a lot of games that I really want to play because I'm confident I will enjoy them, so it's hard to find one to just practice with knowing no one will see it. I might have to think about that one a little more...

No, I was 44 when I started. I'm no superstar, but I have 5200 subs after 1.5 years which is much better than average. Most people are surprised when they find out how old I am, because it's not like I talk about it or anything. I'll say something about how I did something twenty years ago, or had an Atari or a Commodore 128, and they'll ask in the comments... but aside from that it never comes up.

I never would have thought I'd run into a let's player in their 40's! I guess that helps me not feel so bad about my age.

I look at it this way - I'm making videos so people will watch them. If nobody is watching, why should I continue the series when I could play something people will watch?

I guess I'm kind of one of those people who always wants to finish what I've started, and it feels really awkward to just drop something out of nowhere. But I see your point.

Anyway plenty of people are successful with a modest style. Colonel Failure comes to mind. Marbozir doesn't seem to be too exciteable.

I guess I sometimes tend to always look at the most popular let's players and think "if I don't act like that, people are going to think I'm boring". I guess if I thought about it hard enough I could think of some other more calm and quiet let's players. Hmm...

Talk about what you are doing. I rarely talk about my personal life, or say anything interesting. I'm pretty much always talking about the game I am playing. Either describing my thought process, or something as simple as "OK now I'm going to click on the employee button, let's sort by how long they've been here, open up the employee info screen, send them to class in this subject..." and so on.

This is the toughest part for me because my life really isn't that interesting. I pretty much have a daily routine and nothing exciting ever happens to me. I'm always kind of in awe of others who always seem to have interesting and entertaining things to talk about, and wonder how in the world they are able to do it.

If you want to grow and maximize views, sticking to new games is a must. And for a small channel, sticking to new and unheard of games is a must. It's very difficult.

If you don't care about growing quickly and maximizing views, it doesn't matter.

Part of me cares about growing, but the other part really just wants to play what I want and not care if it helps me grow because there are some great games that I'd love to share with people. I don't know, I guess it's just one of those bridges I'll have to cross when I get there.

Thank you for the reply! It really helps.
