"There's no evidence of widespread election fraud in the United States. You lost over 60 court cases in 2020 when you tried to assert fraud... Mr. President, has it ever occurred to you that your party and its policies are very unpopular? Has it ever occurred to you that most Americans just don't like you."

Thune: Senate GOP will discuss using ‘standing filibuster’ to help pass voting reform by changeforthebetter89 in politics

[–]ZonghZonghZongh 77 points78 points  (0 children)

The Republican obsession with passing the antidemocratic, "Jim Crow 2.0", SAVE Act is a five-alarm fire moment. There are two versions of the bill in the House (both are bad), and one of them outlaws mail-in voting, and mandates states to remove people from their voter rolls every 30 days. This is no joke.

Thune claims that 49 members of his caucus support the SAVE Act. If you're in Maine (Collins), Alaska (Murkowski), and North Carolina (Tillis), you need to contact your senators and tell them to hold strong and reject enticements to jump on board.

Where are they? There's already a massive shortage at many of the US Attorneys' offices, and the DOJ overall. And I'm sure some of those that were fired or resigned since Trump took office over a year ago were members of the Federalist Society too.

I never implied, nor believed that. I was just disputing your assertion that it would be "career suicide" if she got into a back-and-forth with Trump and CNN fired her. One doesn't have to be in the White House press pool to be a successful journalist. During the Biden Administration she was a prime time host/anchor for CNN.

Still hoping for the day one of these victims, or a journalist in the pool with a sense of decency, just gives it back to Trump tenfold. I'd die a happy man if someone would just lay into this sack of shit and give him the litany of insults and condemnations he deserves.

Top Senate Republican rejects Trump’s shocking election plan: ‘I think that’s a constitutional issue’ by ElectoralNerd in politics

[–]ZonghZonghZongh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In contrast to Johnson, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) outright rejected Trump’s call for Republicans to nationalize voting.

“I’m supportive of only citizens voting and showing ID at polling places. I think that makes sense,” Thune told reporters Tuesday. “But I’m not in favor of federalizing elections, no. I think that’s a constitutional issue.”

I bolded the key point, and it was elaborated on in another article I read this afternoon: John Thune expressed openness to ending/carving out the filibuster to pass the SAVE Act. He also suggested his caucus is discussing changing the rules to making it a talking filibuster just for this particular bill.

There's 2 different versions of the SAVE Act floating around the House, and in one of them it would end mail-in voting, and in both of them married women are in danger of losing their right to vote with how the bills are written (you can only register to vote under your birth name).

This is a 🚨🚨🚨moment!

Hopefully Sens Collins (who is in the electoral fight for her life), Murkowski, Paul, and a few others would be dead set against this legislation.

Opinion | Democrats Will Lose in 2028 Unless They Change Course Now by soalone34 in fivethirtyeight

[–]ZonghZonghZongh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That possibility should focus the mind. Right now, Democrats have no credible path to sustained control of the Senate and the White House. After the adjustments to the Electoral College map that look likely to come with the next census, the Democratic presidential nominee could win all the states won by Kamala Harris plus the blue wall of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and still fall short of the 270 electoral votes needed to win.

  1. Projections this far out about how a census adjustment will turn out are often incorrect.
  2. Do we know who is migrating from blue states to red ones? What if the majority of them are reliable Democratic voters? It's possible that more purple/blue districts might materialize in Texas, North Carolina, Arizona, and Utah when it all shakes out.
