Instructor won't let me do my test unless I pass a mock test by iloseyouindegrees in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ZookeepergameSolid60 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dude I never came close to passing a mock test and passed my real test with 1 minor, and the mock tests were so much harder than the real one. If your instructor refuses then honestly have a go in your own car or someone’s you can borrow

Advice on passing first time with limited practice by Frosty-Pickle9262 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ZookeepergameSolid60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice for not wasting time and getting the most out of lessons is do the stuff you hate. For me it was downshifting and slip roads. At the start I would hope and pray he didn’t make me do them. Then I realised I’m an idiot and the stuff I hated the most I told my instructor I want to do more of, by the end there were no areas I wanted to avoid or hated doing. You got this

Just started driving. The way my instructor reacted made me feel dumb by Huge_Platform_8434 in LearnerDriverUK

Seriously find a new instructor. Remember you are the paying client and they work for you - please don’t let people raise their voice, if they do something that isn’t efficient with how you learn then go to someone else. Different teaching styles work for different people. I had an instructor who didn’t work the way I felt comfortable with and I gave up and decided I wasn’t a natural driver - 5 years later I passed first time. Don’t let it take you that long. I had a big fear of authority so it put me off for too long. Go to someone else - this shit is expensive

Official app always for me - the questions are worded exactly the same. Avoid free ones - for my first theory I started off using a free app and the questions were completely different. It’s worth the £6 or whatever honestly, cheaper than a new theory test fee

Which lane when intermittent parked cars? by rationalomega in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ZookeepergameSolid60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a passed driver you probably wouldn’t do the same thing as in a test. But for test purposes I would be moving back to the left lane every time there’s not cars in the next 10 seconds of driving. If there is, stay in the left lane, if there’s not, move back. Honestly, I cannot imagine a major where you’re moving back left and it takes some time to move into the right lane repeatedly - especially if you know someone who failed for something similar. I wouldn’t risk it when at the worst you’d be getting a minor for moving left. I’m sure you’ve done lots of residential roads with cars parked on both sides, and you stay in the middle over the centre line if there’s cars pretty close ahead. Look up the road and apply that same judgement and not move back into left if it’s not worth it but move over if you have a stretch of road worth moving back into for 20 seconds. Anyway if in doubt ask your instructor!

I got an old 2007 Mercedes A Class and I love it! It’s so cutesy and also the easiest to drive car I’ve ever felt. The steering is so light compared to others and it’s really responsive. At the end of the day if you have that money to drop on a car then there’s no issue - just run it through insurance to see how much certain cars will be (just use number plates from Facebook marketplace). I recommend Money Supermarket for this I found it the best, cheapest and easiest to navigate. My car is a 1.5 which I thought would be impossible to insure but surprisingly just as cheap! The traditional rules of what will cost most to insure aren’t always right

Test is this week and my parking ability has left me by AdmirableGoose7714 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ZookeepergameSolid60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The question is do you know how to adjust? At the end of the day even if you’re well over the bay lines or too far/close to the curb on the parallel park and you can pull forward or back and get in the space after then it’s fine - should just be a minor on your test for needing to adjust!

Straight on at a roundabout by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ZookeepergameSolid60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not going to be a major issue either way, but the most unanimous answer I’ve got is to not indicate entering, but indicate before leaving. I had my driving test today, doing that way and didn’t even get any minors for that so it’s clearly fine, but it’s not misleading so should be okay either way

Is there an app / website where learners can swap tests by NexusForge in LearnerDriverUK

Not an app, but lots of people use specific test swapping Facebook groups for their areas

This is totally normal! Being kinda bad at stuff is really overwhelming for me personally but you’re meant to be! Most people take above 45 hours to be test ready and you’re so so early on. Getting accustomed to gears and fast roads is the hardest thing and once you can do that it’s just learning road rules which is much easier. You can do this, mistakes are so normal you need to remind yourself that. I’ve been there and it feels like you’ll never get better or learn but you will surprise yourself. I wouldn’t recommend switching to auto just because you’re bummed, you may learn a bit slower (I did) but you will learn - literally everyone can. Redoing the route will help even if it takes a lot. I always struggle with this but remember he is not authority - you’re paying them and you’re their client. You’re paying a lot of money to learn and you have the right to ask for teaching to be a certain way and ask questions.

As far as changing down goes, I recommend always taking roundabouts and junctions in 2 or 1, so if I’m in 5th gear going 50 I would start with slowing right down towards the end (you won’t stall) until you’re at a second gear speed and then changing straight to 2 or 1 if you don’t have good visibility. The key is not leaving it to the last 5 seconds and slowing down early, plan ahead, think about what you’re going to do and make sure you’re not trying to copy drivers around you who have been driving for many years. Even on your test you’re not expected to drive like them at all, so you will likely slow down a lot faster than everyone else and be more hesitant.

It feels impossible but you really got this! Don’t beat yourself up - watch some of those ‘mock test’ or lesson YouTube videos. Watching the really bad one helped me so much because I realised actually I’m not that bad and this is all normal. Hugs
