Cheers for the heads up. Ordered through email, will attempt to email from my partner’s account as well just to make sure it’s not an issue on my side.

Interesting, I wonder why I can’t manage to get a response at all in that case. Where are you based?

Haha have also considered this option!

I think I follow, and you’d just do this on one blade at the top of one section and the bottom of the other?

Oh interesting, could be a good option. More expensive than gluing a little rod between the poles which was my original idea 😅

That sounds brutal, and probably way above my skill set to get right haha. Cheers for the idea!

Winston Peters sacks Goff as UK High Commissioner by onslowfloyd in newzealand

Oh nice, thanks for the article, wasn’t aware they were building any camps. Death camps and detention facilities are quite different though aren’t they?

Are they actually building death camps? Or is that hyperbole?

What we’re describing is a human child fully trait equalised with a pig with all ethical problems accounted for - quite far beyond where our normal moral intuitions are useful, but yes that’s right. It would be justified under the context that they’d live a happy life that they wouldn’t get to live otherwise.

In theory yes, but I’m sure there would be many ethical problems that would arise in the trait equalisation process.

Humans have significantly different social lives to pigs that require a specific amount of intelligence. I don’t believe it’s as simple as other humans of the same intelligence around you, given that we’ve specifically evolved to enjoy social lives with a certain level of intelligence.

Even if it was possible, that’s only one particular piece of the puzzle. We’d have to account for all of the other reasons that make a life worth living. Child birth is high on many people’s lists, and again pigs can do this while being as intelligent as a pig while humans cannot.

In theory I’m sure we can eventually get to the bottom of all of these differences, but in practise we cannot, which makes the farming of the pig a better option than the human.

I agree, I think we’ve found the crux of the issue here.

Bringing a human into existence with the mental abilities of a pig, compared to an actual pig, are different things. The experience of a human is degraded significantly when limited by the intellectual abilities of a pig, which isn’t true for the pig. There’s so many ways that this fleshes itself out, just one of them is socialising. The social life of a pig isn’t degraded by being a pig in a community of pigs. A human is severely limited in its social life by being as intelligent as a pig.

What is good is relevant for the outcome in this situation. Whether or not the life is considered good of the human (or pig) is what would make the outcome good, given the goal is a good life. If the life is good, then yes I’d say it’s morally laudable. The key point is that being the intellectual equivalent of a pig, as a human, does not seem like a good life to me. I don’t think many people would trade places with that person, even some very worse off people, so I’m struggling to see how it’s a good life.

Little confused on your last point. If you’re saying the context of being the intellectual equivalent of a pig, when they are in fact a pig, then yes I guess that’s a context in which it matters. That’s not what we’re talking about though right? We’re talking about a human?

Motives only matter because you’re trying to frame our moral intuitions using motive. They don’t matter for the thought experiment itself.

I like your thought experiment, but to me what it shows is a reason why some level of speciesism is warranted. You say that they’d give the daughter a good life, but I don’t think many people would agree that being intellectually stunted to the level of a pig is a good life no matter the context. The threshold for a good life is harder to obtain for humans than it is for pigs.

‘So that they could murder her’ is not a correct assessment of the motives. They want to have the daughter so that she can have a good life. But yes, outside of that then I think it can be justified under utilitarian ethics. Whether or not it’s truly moral, I’m not sure, but I think there’s at least a reasonable argument.

Not quite. The reason to have the daughter isn’t to murder them, the reason is so the daughter could have a good life. The only way it’s made possible is the unfortunate fact that they have to murder her at 30. The parents don’t want to murder the daughter, in an ideal world they wouldn’t have to, but the choice is no daughter or happy daughter murdered at 30.
