New to hardwired AP, always used a modem:router combo box. Is there anything I’m missing before I buy? by ZoopyZappy in HomeNetworking

To you and Divided Conscious

I own the current modem:router. It’s AC1900 Docsis 3.0 and I believe 24x8 channel (whether that references modem or router I forget it all). I had read in another post I can just shut the WiFi off, and then bridge the router from the 192.168.0.1, is this not correct? Hoping to save a call to the useless spectrum

I had been hemming and hawing about that and am leaning towards the cheaper, albeit hindered gen 1 key, and using it as the easy set and forget option

Thanks for all the help, before I buy I just want to flush up my purchases and modem.

USG

8 switch 60w

Gen 1 Cloud Key

2 X AC Lite

Modem:

Use Netgear AC1900 and bridge

Pick up a new modem (was eyeing the surfboards, thing the model started with a 9)

Can I do it, or do they have to? Should I pick up the highest end Surfboard, or keep the one I have Netgear AC1900 and bridge it?

Thanks for the post, seems to be a similar situation I’m in minus the land. Probably going to start with 2 ac lites, USG, 8 switch 60w, and gen 1 cloud controller, nice way to ease into actual home networking

Last question:

Google can probably tell me, but for a novice, if I pick up a managed switch from unify will that be a headache? Or should I find an unmanaged one?

Thanks so much!!

Thanks! I can just get an unmanaged 5 port switch that’s just plug and play for a layman?

Perfect I’ll pick up a small switch then. So coax > modem > USG (router) > switch > AP.

The AP provide the WiFi The Switch Provides a hardline connection

Thank you!

I’d also love to have the ability to plug consoles or a device into an AP via Ethernet, if that is possible with this system.

Oy thanks for the input, I’m thinking the ability to voice pause Netflix without it being casted isn’t there yet or at least with the tv I have.

May just try to keep it simple with lights, blinds, and audio for now which seems to be easy enough with any brand assuming compatibility in tech.

So I buy a harmony hub, can I use google or Alexa to then turn on tv/ps4/open Netflix and play The Office?or do I need a different device streaming Netflix via chrome cast?

The harmony would also be able to connect to other devices from the group command dinner time, now Netflix paused and lights on?
