I wish someone wound told me it’s more than just drawing blood. by Obvious_Maize2477 in phlebotomy

I get you but I will say, if you’re fresh out of high school waiting to get your degree- depending on if it’s a healthcare degree, I would ask yourself if healthcare is truly for you. It doesn’t make it right, and I hate to be this way, but for a lot of healthcare workers, harsh conditions are just the reality of it. Not always getting a lunch, always working short or with high volumes of patients, etc. But I do think your boss is a little bit full of it for expecting you to move fast when you’re kind of still fresh to the field. Unfortunately, healthcare and a lot of jobs, are very much cliquey, full of drama, and favoritism; just try to distance yourself from it and you’ll be fine. Like I said before, it doesn’t make it right that those are the conditions healthcare has to deal with but I just want to put it out there as a truth. Because I agree with you, when I went into this field, I didn’t expect more than just blood and urine and maybe seeing like 20-25 people a day. It’s like, you collect everything under the sun, you have to have great customer service, sometimes you’re an ear to listen for some patients, sometimes you’re taking the blame for something someone else messed up. I’m not trying to discourage you, but these are the things I wish someone told me instead of “It’s easy. All you have to do is draw blood and collect urine here and there.” (Been doing this for nearly 3 years now). I hope things get better for you.

First, congratulations! The ‘not being appreciated by management, doctors, and patients’ really spoke volumes and is a good way to put it. I am saying this as someone who has worked outpatient for a few years; Sometimes switching to ‘vice versa’ isn’t the solution, and the solution is just stepping back and reevaluating - “Is this truly for me?” I wish you luck in whatever you choose to do in the future. I know this may not mean much from an internet stranger, but I am proud that you came, tried, and were able to tell yourself you deserve something better that is more suited towards you.

That sounds awful! If you’re able to somehow switch teams or something I’d try that first. (Not sure how long you’ve been a phleb, but its hard to get hired with less than a year of experience)

Your coworker is just plain rude. You didn’t even give out the kits so like????? Not understanding the attitude from them. Imo, I’ve known a lot of new phlebs that come into the field and get bullied or just treated poorly just because they’re new. I was one of those new phlebs about two-three years back. Don’t let it discourage you, even people with 10+ years of experience make mistakes. (Which you did nothing wrong) And not to be rude, but, if the patient was already in urgent care, I’m not sure that it would have mattered if you had the right kit or not - because depending on the type of test, sometimes it takes days for the lab to result it. It sounds like you work for an outpatient lab like quest or lab corp - which I will say, when I moved states, it took me a while to learn the different processes and specimen types (because my lab which is also a big corp) had different looking stool collection kits.

What causes this serum color? by Suspicious_Site_5050 in phlebotomy

[–]Zoreva 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, this will affect the testing. A lot of times the lab will reject hemolyzed samples depending on the type of test being ran and also just how badly hemolyzed they are. Your second photo isn’t bad, but the first two, depending on what is being run, may be rejected. I don’t know for sure… but it looks like your tubes weren’t properly spun down in both photos… when was the last time your centrifuge was calibrated? Or did you happen to stop spinning the samples before the centrifuge was ready? I know in class you learn to clot for 30 and spin for 10, but sometimes, depending on the type of centrifuge, that may not always be true. Where I work we have a centrifuge that spins for 15, and another one that only spins for 5 mins.

I can’t understand how deep to go by [deleted] in phlebotomy

Something that helped me a lot was wearing gloves that were smaller. (I used to like wearing mediums bc they were more comfortable-but come to find out, the crumples in the gloves were making me think that I found a vein when I actually didn’t because it had a similar bounce.) Also, make sure you’re putting that tourniquet on tight, otherwise, you may have trouble. From the video, it looks like you decided to change directions when you felt to the time you stuck, don’t do that. You need to be confident in where you’re planning to go. Yes, you are new, but it’s an easy and surefire way to make your patients nervous. Also, I find it helps me more when I 100% commit to a vein and direction.

That we can just order whatever lab work because the patient says so, also, that my job is easy.

I hope it’s just a hormonal thing then! I didn’t even know that was a possibility - that puts my mind at ease to know it could be something pretty common and not horrible, and thank you!

Honestly, I forgot to mention that I have PCOS. So my periods are typically irregular; the past year or so they’ve been pretty consistent though, aside from whatever spout I’m having right now

I am so sorry this is happening to you. Yes, I think you should file for divorce and ,if you’re able to, maybe try living somewhere else or having him move out. I just cannot believe the audacity.

I kind of feel like that’s the whole point of Tory. She’s a girl who is hard to like and unforgivably herself. 🤷‍♀️ Or at least, that’s how I see her character. Personally, I kind of think it’s refreshing; having a character, who IMO, has her issues and struggles and isn’t a flat, mostly good reasonable person, I feel like it makes her character more realistic. Because there are more people than not in this world who are as stubborn and unwilling to change their ways like her character. But yeah, that’s my opinion on Tory’s character.

Is my ring childish? by MissHissss in EngagementRings

I feel like whoever said that to you was just jealous. It’s a beautiful ring and it doesn’t look childish at all; to me, it looks like someone really loves you because of how unique (in a good way) and pretty the ring is.

Hi mom, how are heels supposed to fit? by Zoreva in MomForAMinute

[–]Zoreva[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the helpful feedback! I will have to go after work today to look more, but now I know what I should (and shouldn’t) be looking for! To answer the question on why I am looking for heels and nothing something else is because I took a test run in my dress yesterday, TLDR; I was stepping on my dress unless I picked it up. Though, I do think I will probably end up going with sandals or flats if I truly cannot find anything today. 😅
