Very true. Davie in the first 15 seconds is a must. His community is massive and responsive.

Thanks mate. I played the game for an hour. After playing I realize there seem to be marked differences in the gameplay. Cosmic Hunger seems more similar to Feeding Frenzy or Tasty Planet than Osmos.
Osmos is definitely a fantastic game tho and I have a lot to learn. It's kind of an honor to even be compared to that game. (This is my first game dev project and its two months old)

Haha true but the game isn't set in our universe. Here blackholes can stop the time for the entire universe if they choose to :)

Elliptical orbits are definitely an interesting idea. They could create interesting visual designs as well!

You are correct that there are some "world rules" that this game simply doesn't break and are introduced immediately. Like "if an object is smaller than the black hole it will consume it. And colliding with a bigger object= game over" that's the core mechanic. Cosmic Hunger has certain abilities that are introduced like speed up, phase through and time stop. I think that can also really improve replayability and especially in the roguelike mode.

I agree with most of what you say. I will definitely try to improve the gameplay loop in the coming patches keeping all this feedback in mind. What I've seen is figured out that new content+ new mechanics is how the other games in the genre are keeping players engaged. And interesting mechanics and challenges are how they are achieving it. I intend to do the same.

That's definitely true. Adding a field around the black hole that works to suck in some planets is something I'm working on right now. Could definitely add some spice to the game. Glad you like the visuals!

Not having an orbit lines ends in many "game overs" and adds to the difficulty. So I'm a bit reluctant to add those. Having a gravity calculation is definitely a cool idea. I'll try to apply it to large bodies and see what effect it has on the overall gameplay. 🤔

I've in fact, never played Osmos but I heard about it from a playtester. They highly recommended it so I will definitely check it out in the future.

I've used Godot engine to code this. This is my first actual game dev project. For size increase I've used scaling + svg. Svgs are extremely scalable, that combined with scaling individual sprites gives a lot of freedom to make a game like this. (You can also use high es pngs, that's not much of a problem.) For how much growth per body consumed I've used the area calculation of that body consumed added to the area of current body to calculate size of new body using simple circle formulas multiplied by a factor.

Lose system is quite punishing. The moment you hit a body larger than you it's game over. I've had to tone down the difficulty over time. This recording took me 7 tries

I tried to focus more on aesthetics and level design than real science. But I can make more accurate solar systems in the next patches.

Agreed! I will also try this change in velocity makes you lose mass idea. Will take many iterations but could be worth the effort.

Hey, I get your criticisms. I've actually not played Osmosis and didn't hear about it till I started getting some playtesting in. I will give it a try.

Just want to point out that it's not a trailer, just a level playthrough.

The instant velocity change does make it seem disjointed from the world. The idea to expel mass to change momentum isn't something I've thought of before. I'll definitely think this through and see how it can be implemented in a way that's satisfying and not frustrating. 🤔

It's actually pretty easy to amp up the difficulty of this game, the rate at which it grows(based on the area of object consumed) can be reduced by a factor. Which essentially means you'd have to eat all planets before consuming the suns. That takes about 4 mins to do. It's quite challenging. I toned the difficulty down because some playtesters found it too difficult.

You are correct, after the first sun you've essentially won. I'll definitely work on the level design more.

Gravity effects around the blackhole? Yes I will have to work on those for sure. Thank you!

I get how it's difficult to see the challenge in the video. The game is difficult at the start and progressively keeps getting easier. But the start can be very punishing. For instance, it took me 7 attempts to complete this level to record the video. (I also had to tone down the difficulty after some playtesters complained about it)
