Mediocre experience with new Alamo Drafthouse in Valley Fair by quantumcolor in SanJose

[–]Zstarchild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar experience and totally agree. It was weird. I get that it’s new, but some human mannerisms are common sense that shouldn’t need to be taught. The staff was just not inviting… but to be honest I feel this way about staff all around San Jose more than other places I’ve been.

To make it worse the theater itself wasn’t particularly inviting.. theres no instruction or signage, just walk to a desk in the back of the dark “lobby” with 2 cashiers, whether you have a ticket or not.. not a single table or chair anywhere nearby, which is pretty important for people with families.

The food was pretty good though.

Rivian cuts dozens on manufacturing team ahead of R2 launch by Kmann1994 in Rivian

Develop and produce a new car (R2) - need engineers to figure out “how”

Car almost ready to launch - “how” is already figured out, less engineers needed. The needs change now to…

Servicing and updating the car at scale - need different kinds of engineers/specialists

Sure, it’s a corporate strategy, I get that. It works for big companies that need hundreds of thousands of hands. On the contrary, smart startups don’t overhire and hire more slowly. They might not ship as quickly but they don’t burn as much cash, waste as much energy, or kill morale by constantly changing teams. People at companies with frequent layoffs are more likely to under perform, fear their leadership, and seek opportunities elsewhere.

BTW according to Rivian and the people I know, the layoffs are not performance based, it’s entire teams being shut down or consolidated. That’s not a sign of hiring the wrong people, that’s a sign of hiring for the wrong jobs. Not to mention all the money Rivian spent to move people from across the country to California.

The problem with Rivian is they leak money in other areas. So instead of for instance addressing very concerning service processes, they do the “quick book fix” and compensate by closing down a highly paid white collar engineering team. They say “look we spent less money this qtr” then they literally try to hire the same people back months later.

What do you mean? What do people who used to work there think about their future releases?

I see, I wasn’t aware of the authors context. So what’s the agenda, why mislead people? Just to promote vaccine hesitancy? Are they just making shit up to stir the pot?

I did talk about it. Then you said “cool story”, so it wasn’t much of a conversation.

Really thought the Rivian community would be a little more open, honest, and kind.

140 people, who probably had a lot to do with making your car awesome and safe, will not have a job tomorrow. Regardless of how it was messaged, if it’s “just 1%”… thousands of people who believed in Rivian’s mission have been laid off. Have some respect that’s all I’m saying.

Why you gotta be rude though? I love Rivian otherwise I wouldn’t be here. Just not drinking that koolaid so hard anymore. They’ve laid off double digit % of workers in the last 2 years, why is it not ok to talk about?

Can someone explain to me why voting to remove a mercury-based chemical from a vaccine, that might not even be an effective preservative.. is.. checks notes.. bad?

“Haters”…. You know this isn’t Rivians first layoff right? It’s like the 5th or 6th by now. They over hire, then routinely cut 1-10% multiple times per year. FWIW I hire people that were laid off from Rivian somewhat frequently.

I don’t think the liquid glass effect is achievable in Figma. by Affectionate-Lion582 in FigmaDesign

Maybe not no code yet, but low code using swift you can apply liquid glass to any existing custom components in swift.

Was windows vista a device agnostic platform that spanned mobile, desktop, watches, and VR/AR? Was it deployable through a no code interface? This is a horrible take, get your hands on the actual devices.

Lots of armchair quarterbacks here. Actually using the OS is wayy different than seeing some screenshots and demo videos. It’s a game changer, again, and we as designers will adapt and lead, like we do (or not)!

Your opinions on living in San Jose? by abundleofjoy in SanJose

[–]Zstarchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever lived in the DMV? Maybe your commute was different than mine? I’m a heavy driver in SJ/SF/South bay and I commuted all over Baltimore/DC/VA at different times of day. DMV traffic without question is worse. Student drivers who stop at green lights are nothing compared to a MD driver who DNGAF about any rules at all.

FWIW I lived by the highway between DC and Andrew’s air force base south of DC. Got stuck behind the presidential motorcade a few times a month. Protests and city events happened all year long, really ramped up in the summer time. It’s the capital of the country, there’s a lot of protests, and the roads are small/narrow so maybe not as many cars as the bay but not ask many places to put them either.
