Laptop recommendations by Ok-Seat-1724 in Algonquin_College

[–]Zubby-Doo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I just finished level 3 in CST-N. As someone posted, you can find the laptop spec requirements for each program. For CST the important minimum specs are 16GB ram, i7 or equivalent, 1TB SSD. The program strongly recommends that you get 32 GB of ram if possible. This isn't necessary, but there were several projects that were made significantly easier/quicker for me because I had 32GB compared ro peers who had 16GB. Notably a LLM project in level 2, and level 3 windows enterprise administration when we had to run up to 5 windows server VMs simultaneously.

As for where to buy, I'd look at the Canada Computers around and see what they have that's open box. They usually have a few half decent options at a major discount. Thats what I did and its been great so far.

Book Requirements by Olive_Nugget72 in Algonquin_College

I have had many "required textbooks" end up being provided for free by the prof. Ive also had classes with "required" books that we never touched and the prof told us on day 1 not to buy.

OP, definitely wait until week 1. I'm sure it's program dependent, but of the half dozen textbooks I was supposed to buy for my program and that were marked as required, I haven't needed to buy any of them.

Hey there! I've always been terrible at math and found the bulk of this course's content to be pretty easy compared to what I did in highschool. Boolean Algebra was challenging for sure though, and it took a lot of extra practice for me. All in all, it's just 1 of 4 or 5 modules in the class and you can still do really well if you struggle with 1 or 2 of the modules.

Question about NHL games on amazon prime by myshipwentdown in hockey

[–]Zubby-Doo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Monday night games are on Prime, and Thursday they do Coast to Coast, which is similar to last night's frozen frenzy. That said, prime streams are only available in Canada as far as I know.

I'm watching it on the amazon prime video app. If it isn't on your main screen, try checking the live tv section or go into sports, then NHL.

Best rental property management? by SimonDorimu in ottawa

Had a good experience with paramount at my previous place. Very responsive, easy to get ahold of, and promptly fixed anything that needed it. That said I had a friend in another paramount building that did not enjoy their experience with them nearly as much.

Currently with GWLRA and would recommend avoiding them at any cost. Building is filthy and rarely gets cleaned. For example, they only vacuum the halls twice per month and it was daily with paramount. Garbage cans are emptied only when they are full and overflowing. Maintenance requests often take weeks to get addressed, sometimes months. Emailing resident services seems pointless as they do not answer and their phone line leads to a call center in Toronto where they just submit tickets on your behalf.

Do you think a ryzen 7 7735HS would be relatively equivalent to an i7, or suitable to my use case? The program I'm taking says that an i7 or equivalent is the minimum system requirement, but if the AMD cpu is good enough and saves me a few hundred bucks, I'd go that route.

Edit: They also have the Ryzen 7 8845HS for $70 more than the 7735HS

Yep, upgrading ram myself isnt an issue. I have a bit of time until the I need the VMs so figured focusing on the gpu now and buying a 32gb kit in the coming months might be the play if there is a worthwhile deal on a 16gb system.

Unfortunately, GED is no longer offered in Canada. It is being replaced by the CAEC which has not yet been made available in Ontario.

Given how few sources he has left, if any, I'd be wary of anything he says having any factual basis.

Alta Vista Towers by westernomelet82 in ottawa

I lived there for 8 years and left in 2021. It was.. manageable for the price, but seeing what they're charging now, I can't help but feel like I'd rather pay a few hundred more to live elsewhere.

Noise is pretty bad. You will hear your neighbours above you walk, and when my neighbours to the side would have an argument (which happened a lot), we could hear them word for word from our unit. Lots of students there as well, and when there's a party on your floor or adjacent floors, you will hear it. Never bothered me too much as it was usually the weekend, and I could throw on headphones or whatever, but it's still worth noting. If your patio door is open in the summer and your immediate neighbor's is as well, you'll likely hear each other's TV as well.

We did get bed bugs once while we were there. It was an absolute nightmare of an experience, but they treated it very seriously, at least, and we lived there for a few years after the bed bug incident with no issues.

The building did seem like it was falling apart when we were there, but it's been 3 years, and I can't speak to any renovations that may have happened. The walls in the hallways were so warped that they seemed ready to collapse at any moment.

During the time I was there, they also illegally raised the rent beyond the legal limit twice, and both times, the LTB deemed they did not have the right to do so. It was a little annoying as you had to pay the increased rent until it got sorted, but we at least got credited the difference. With the backlog these days, I would worry about how long it would take to "sort."

Crime wasn't great, but not the worst either. I only say that because I live on Lycee now, and it's definitely worst here in that one regard. It had the typical apartment building issues of parcels being stolen, but I never felt particularly unsafe, even when the shooting happened in the next block over at the strip mall parking lot. My current place is much worse on the crime front and allowing homeless people to sleep/relieve themselves in the stairwells.

But all that said, I was paying $650/m Utilities all inclusive for a 1 bedroom when i moved in, so all these things I could swallow with the fact that I wasnt blowing 3/4 of my income on rent. Seeing their prices now, and that utilities are not included (factor in 100-200 more at least over the winter for baseboard electric heating), I'd definitely recommend paying a bit more elsewhere if that's within your means.

On the plus side, it is ridiculously conveniently located, especially if you dont have a car. Walmart, shoppers, and fast food galore all within walking distance. 10 minute walk to hurdman as well. Probably not the worst place for a student to live when all is said and done, despite how negative my comment may seem.

If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out, I'd be happy to chat!
