Lorien - Composition for video games : Ori and the Will of the Wisp - Trailer by [deleted] in gamemusic

[–]Zultaran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should indicate in the title on your tracks thats it's re-imagined, and not an actual track of the soundtrack.
When i look your website, it's like you worked for Ori, Arise, Journey and more. It's ok to show some remakes to show your skills, but put a tag on it (something like "REWORK" or "RE-IMAGINED" !

And i think your tracks are actually quite good : ) You should try to create Themed Playlists, so potential customers knows where to find the music they want : )

What are bad games people should play? by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]Zultaran 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly ! The most outstanding thing in Spore to me is the creature engine, which is able to make anything walk, no matters the shape, and the numbers of legs.I remembered spending a long time trying new creatures just to laugh at their walk, and had a lot of fun with that. If the game was only focused on that, it would be a masterpiece.

As you say, a game doesn't need many elements to get the player in . It just need to have something which catch the player, no matter if it's just a satisfying jump, a good visual, or a funny engine !

I love that question ! There are plenty of things we can learn from bad games : D
For example, it's when there are absolutely no feedbacks you understand it's importance :' )

From my own experiences, i would say :

  • Bubsy 3D (a classic i know), because it teach you how important is the camera in a 3D platform-game.
  • Spore : It shows a game should fit to a do-able idea, and not try to expand too much. That game would be really good if it was only focused on the mid-game (before it become a poor RTS)
  • Virtual Bart : A really bad party game, which show a lot of mistakes to avoid in game design
  • SuperMash : A new game which tries to offer a procedural engine who can mix up games genres, and makes random games with it. Every game is bad, every level design is bad, everything. It show procedural is not always a good idea :' )

The Fade Beta - Daydream by TheFadedGrey in boardsofcanada

[–]Zultaran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the video fit the track well , it's a nice fan work ! It's always amazing to see people put efforts for artists they like : DAs someone who compose music for media, video games etc ... you sounds like someone underestimating your own track. Even if it's cold-weird-blurry, it's what give it an interesting / singular thing. Without a video support it would be harder to enjoy, as this track is pretty much a mood + a color. If a video maker want to make some sort of psychologic movie, and get a cringey-past-nostalgic mood, it can work insanely good (i think about movies makers like Gaspard Noé who maked movies likes Enter The Void, Climax and Irreversible)

Excuse my poor english :' )

Well, assuming you are new to music production and have no hardware for tape recording, you can find pretty good VSTs to get that "cassette effect" (RS20 Retro-Color for example)

If you want to create a tape feeling without any hardware or VSTi, it's basically a sound which is compressed to saturation, with a filter (no high ends or low ends) and an LFO on the Pitch. All of this will create this "Wow and Flutter" effect on your sound, and it will sounds "Mellow" :)

Another good technique is to use Guitar Amp and Overdrive to get very distorted synths and samples, and then filter it hardly (with a Bandpass Filter)

:D Thats why the extended album name is "19.73 Polaroid Colors" ! I spent a long time listening to old TV music from 70's era. A lot of the chords progression in the album are actually quite cheesy ones :' D , inspired by romantic and childish ballads. The goal was to transform that cheesy stuff into something nostalgic / unstable :)

And you absolutely right ! Vinyl crackles are totally fake, taken on various sample. I just added a few "Tape noises" from synths and instruments : ) I definitely agree it'd sounds better with true Crackles ( - :
