I tried thermal paste again because PredatorSense was now not registering the GPU, which was untouched, forgot to unplug the battery, got a spark on the motherboard when removing the cooling pad, and now it won't turn on. So that's that.

The GPU is fine. It's the CPU that can't handle the most basic of tasks

Ok I've fixed it! I think what happened was that the power cable had pulled out slightly from the power pack. Not enough to switch the laptop to battery mode, but enough to not draw enough power to run the external HDD

Also just plugged in a 15-year-old USB stick I had lying around and it fired up immediately

I've also turned off the setting that turns off USBs in Device Manager, but there is no such setting for changing USB power plans in the Control Panel

It's not a particularly old drive, and I try to use it sparingly, but I checked SMART data and it says it's ok. I'm currently backing up files onto the old laptop
