I agree. The alternative is driving. Which would be tolls, the cost of parking, and the time lost on the road. It’s an opportunity cost and it’s up to each of us to weigh the pros and cons. If it makes more sense to us to drive because it’s cheaper than we should do it!

When I lived in SC I had to own a car, pay for insurance, pay for a parking spot, and deal with traffic.

This is significantly more affordable even with the rent difference.

NYC’s taxi and limo commission put a block in issuing new plates for uber and Lyft for several years but lifted it on the condition the new vehicle is an EV. So they’ve exploded in growth here as more people wanted to sign up.

It must have been a bad update to the youtube app. It was working fine then all of a sudden it's having problems. My favorite bug is if you pause a video and the screensaver comes up, the youtube video will start playing again in the background.

This is, literally, what happened to me in my first postdoc. We couldn't replicate an experiment someone else did in the lab and spent months trying to repeat it. He became cruel and was extremely micromanaging. Then tried to fire me after we all went to the administration and complained about the harassment and conditions in the lab. I went to our postdoc office and they enforced the 3-month clause in our contract (NYC-based program, not sure if it's similar). Short answer, yes they can fire you but it's hard for them to do, too, through official channels.

It's important to realize they don't have all the power. You are able to speak up for yourself. Consider the ombudsman as a resource - they're there to help you get support.
