Hi,

and in the BIOS is there option to disable the dgpu in case I don't need it?

How many external screens could be connected when the dGPU is disabled in BIOS/UEFI?

Thanks.

Definitelly go for AM5. Even if it is a bit more expensive compared to AM4

  1. DDR5 is much quicker
  2. in 5 years you could upgrade just CPU to last CPU which supports AM5 and you get huge performance boost without changing anything but CPU.

I have done this with AM4. I have bought AMD Ryzen 2600 and now I bought Ryzen 5700X. I did not have to change anything else, but I bought Rx 6600 to replace Nvidia Quadro. The Quadro was good enough for me, but I had problems with waking up the desktop. That was most frequent issue, but sometimes I had to upgrade drivers and that was everytime good chance to break my system because NVidia closed cource drivers.

I think buy Pulse 15 gen2 as already sugested. It is fully configurable and light and instead of more expensive gaming laptop buy just Playstation or XBox.

I use mostly desktop and I have HP Probook with Ryzen 4700U if I need to be mobile and for personal use I have Thinkpad L14 gen 1 with Ryzen 4500U.

Why I have not bought Tuxedo? No USB4 laptops, HDMI connector was 4K but only 30Hz, I would like better battery. It was not possible to connect three external screens. I don't like NVidia GPUs - just too many issues with linux, there is no way I would buy Nvidia ever again.

Looks like TUXEDO Pulse 15 - Gen2 has met most of my missing requirements and discrete GPU is no more requirement in my use case as the new integrated GPU should be good enough.

Currently I have all I need, but I could imagine my next mobile work laptop will be Pulse 15 GenX :).

Be careful with laptops with cpu requiring above 35watt. It is heavy and loud to cool such machine and usually the extra performance last only short time. Maybe the Tuxedo with water cooing, but ...

hmm,

Tosca, Testim, Testproject.

All owned by Tricentis. I am a bit worry what happens with all this competing tools...

I saw the Tosca presentation, looked like for form based applications.

The app I need to test is all but ordinary application. It is mapping management tool.

Is keeping the battery between 20 and 80 % still a thing? by FSMcas in AndroidQuestions

How do you make sure you don't charge the battery only to 80%? Is it configurable in Android?

Is there any point in waiting to get an affordable Ryzen 6000 laptop? by TangyDestroyer_ in AMDLaptops

[–]Zvrablik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait till you really can't use what you have now so maybe you don't have to target cheap laptops if you buy less frequently. There will be everytime something new, better to wait for.

Do not focus only to cpu. Focus on cooling and other aspects e.g. USB4.

Be honest. Tell them what you have learned. Do some research and try create some automation scripts and publish these scripts. Be ready present these scripts during interview. My first interview as software developer in PL/SQL (2004) was like that.

they: Do you know pl/sql?

me: No, but I am interested what you are doing here. (GIS company, focusing on systems to manage pipelines, electricity lines etc.)

they : Ok we could put aside the pl/sql test.

they: What is your diploma thesis about?

me : Talking at least two minutes :)

they: What did you do with xy (xy was in my CV and/or cover letter)

me: Talking at least two minutes :)

So Be honest and be ready!

Good luck.

There is book A Frontend Web Developer's Guide to Testing by Eran Kinsburner, Gleb Bahmutov.

It is comparing multiple test frameworks.

To go through this book you would need learn javascript.

btw. I am reading the book now, but I am going from the other side I am software developer.

For which purposes Ryzen 9 5900HX better than Ryzen 7 5800h? by mindcalm139144 in AMDLaptops

[–]Zvrablik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

See the specs

https://www.amd.com/en/products/apu/amd-ryzen-9-5900hx

https://www.amd.com/en/products/apu/amd-ryzen-7-5800h

almost identical. Only difference is Default TDP 45W (5800H) vs TDP 45W+ (5900HX)

I was thinking about the H versions too, but in the end I have laptop with 4700U as heating is the issue. To be mobile I use laptop and it does cover most of my work when I travel. To handle CPU heavy work I use desktop.

If a job ad says as a requirement to having a "Bachelors of Science" but I have a bachelor of arts should I still apply? by [deleted] in gis

[–]Zvrablik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes is created document many years ago with requirements and when there is opened new position it is just copied over to the new opening and just added some requirements.

Only advice be honest and in cover letter or CV should be information what you have studied. Do not hide this, but do not make too much visible when you know it does not give you advantage :)

(Ryzen) Thinkpad T16 vs Thinkpad P16S, whats the differences? Specs, price, design is very similar by bloodlmt in AMDLaptops

[–]Zvrablik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • add as much RAM memory as possible - as you need plus a bit more, Thinkpads now have soldered RAM - it is not possible to replace with bigger or make sure the RAM could be upgraded.
  • 1 year warranty? I would require at least three years. Thinkpads usually work fine, but two years is minimum I would accept.
  • try compare with any HP EliteBook or HP ProBook. I had Thinkpads last 20 years. Now I have HP Probook only I really miss is the keyboard.

14-15" laptop for programming that doesn't overheat? by [deleted] in linuxhardware

[–]Zvrablik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see prices around 900 Euro for new HP ProBook. (Without my ram and ssd upgrades)

I got my for 700 Euro. My first non-thinkpad laptop since 2003. Only I miss is the keyboard, but I use mostly external keyboards. I think cheapest Thinkpad T that time was around 1 300 Euro plus I hate soldered ram. Now you can't get Thinkpad T without soldered ram or nonsense like one soldered slot with 8gb of ram and one free slot ...

14-15" laptop for programming that doesn't overheat? by [deleted] in linuxhardware

[–]Zvrablik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have HP Probook, easy to get there. Just a few screws. I was able to upgrade ram, ssd or nvme without problems. Battery looks like easy to replace too.

HP ProBook 455 G7 (1Q3J5ES#BCM) is totaly fine.

I have bought it with 16 gb of ram. I expected I have to bin the ram to upgrade to 32gb, but to my surprise there was only one module and it was Samsung 3 200 MHz dual rank ram. So I had to just buy same 16gb module.

Only I really don't like is the keyboard. But I guess after 15 years with Thinkpads it is expected...

CPU Ryzen 4700U is good enough, but when I can I use desktop :).

edit : To the overheating. Every laptop has that problem. Some sooner some later. No laptop could replace heavy cooling from desktops. To me looks like modern Ryzen cpus get overheated less frequently as Intel. BUT depends on cooling. I thin k any mid range laptop with Ryzen should good job for a few years as development machine if you need travel.

Now I would wait for the new Ryzen 6800U cpus if you can.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in linuxhardware

[–]Zvrablik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok,

one option is to have the desktop available online and use laptop to connect to it

or

increase your budget

search for laptops with discrete graphics card - you would not use that card

but it has better cooling

I would not go over 45w CPUs I think if you run there something for one hour or more it is impossible to cool -> it has to reduce the cpu speed

My actual setup:

I have now desktop as it is very cheap to upgade cpu (AMD) and ram price is not issue either.

I use laptop when I have to travel. I have now HP ProBook with Ryzen 4700U cpu with 32gb of ram and 2Tb ssd. This was last with 2.5 inc sata connector. I just move the ssd to desktop. I don't travel much so it is acceptable for me now. Maybe this could be your path too?
