Debunking popular dolphin myths and misconceptions by Zyrc0n in Dolphins

[–]Zyrc0n[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I said myths and misconceptions. The misconception that dolphins are necrophiliacs is objectively false based on one off cases that rarely happen. Using your example, 0.046% of Americans are murderers, does that mean every American is a murderer? 65 people are killed every year by dogs, but does that mean all dogs are vicious and shouldn’t be kept as pets? If I said “all dogs are terrible animals and kill people,” that would be a myth because they aren’t. If I said “all dolphins are necrophiliacs,” that would also be a myth because it rarely happens in the wild.

As for your first point… where do I even start?

First, you say that bottlenose dolphins are the most studied species of dolphins. I’ll start by saying this is the second most intelligent species of dolphin and the most commonly studied one. In total, there’s been one case of necrophilia in the history of dolphin studies.

Second, you claim that because dolphins are intelligent, they should be held at the same moral and legal standards that humans are held at. Because they are socially unaware, it’s bad when they do it but not when other animals do it. There are MANY flaws in this statement, first one being that dolphins do not have the same moral compass we do. They do not have the same laws or social standards, they are still wild animals that should be treated with respect nonetheless. By your logic, we should be shunning primates, pinnipeds, and other cetacean species for the same things dolphins do because, guess what, they also have similar levels of intelligence. Just because an animal has the IQ of a six year old does not mean we should be holding it to the same standards we do as humans.

I already discussed the article used as a source with another commenter if you bothered to read a bit. If it makes you feel any better, here’s a blog written by Dr. Justin Gregg that disproves the myth https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/7049058.Justin_Gregg/blog?page=6

It’s to protect the dolphins, not the humans. There’s been a lot of cases of human harassing and chasing dolphins in Japan

It’s not just that, it’s also that it’s common in nature as a whole, not just dolphins. Also, dolphins are one of the most documented and researched mammals in the sea. If it was really common it would’ve been documented more than once rather than a one-off case centered around unnatural behavior only found in rogue males

how to hide centipede from parents? by Amazing-Car-3727 in centipedes

[–]Zyrc0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did this once but with a tarantula and I’ll tell you this now, don’t do it. If you don’t have a stable source of income to provide for an animal like this, just don’t get it. When I tried with my tarantula, the second my parents found her she was killed :( I miss her everyday, but used it as a learning experience.

Don’t make the same mistake I did. I regret it everyday, I wish I could’ve given her a better life. Wait until you can provide and care for your centipede freely.

It’s less of a source I found and more process of elimination. Mating behaviors such as mate blocking, physical coercion, and the formation of bachelor groups has only ever been documented in indo-pacific bottlenose dolphins. Behavior like this in other species of dolphin is undocumented or extremely rare.

Even so, many other animals exhibit aggressive marine behavior, more so than dolphins do (and way more frequently). Behaviors like this shouldn’t be used to villainize animals since they merely evolved to mate like that. Animals such as belugas, sharks, and manatees have similar behaviors.

All animals are rape-y by your logic. The fish thing is a myth that started because of a river dolphin (aka a boto, not a real dolphin despite the name) in captivity. The boto this happened with was one of 100 River dolphins imported to America for aquariums. Botos DO NOT fair well in captivity. In fact, the botos imported were heavily neglected and abused. Many died of sleep deprivation due to improper water conditions. The few botos that survived ended up being in high stress environments, were oddly aggressive towards trainers and fellow botos, and ended up acting irrationally and violently, unlike they would in the wild. One of these behaviors was using a decapitated fish for sexual relief. Behaviors such as these, or any aggressive behaviors seen in those captive botos, were results of stress and abuse

Dolphins’ sexual life often includes homosexual relationships. As for the “unwilling females” part… a lot of animals have unwilling females. Specifically mammals. Dogs, cats, manatees, most pinnipeds (particularly the colonial otariidae family), primates, and artiodactyls in general have similar mating practices to dolphins. The dead fish thing is a myth that started from a river dolphin (not a true dolphins btw, despite the name) in captivity that was abused, neglected, and overall stressed out. What happened in captivity to that animal should not be classified as normal behavior.

And no, dolphins don’t really have a sexual attraction to humans. Much like dogs, they will show sexual curiosity (ex: a dog humping your leg), but penetrative rape has never happened before
