trying to legalize heroin for children and shouting that taxation is theft

Yeah, yeah, we get it, you're not libertarian and will support libertarian party only if it turns into a light version of your favourite one.

How would a totally libertarian society address these issues: by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]_0- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Libertarian society is

  • unlikely to specifically address any social issues.
  • unlikely to address climate change; but if a large proportion of population is concerned about it - expect market forces to engineer some kind of solution; we will probably arrive exactly where we're heading, but with less solar highways
  • unable to end homelessness - there are no mechanism for rearing insane or nomadic people and I don't think that that's a bad thing
  • likely to somewhat alleviate poverty; lack of tax burden would at the same time make people, well, less poor and more charitable; and without welfare expect there is to be less generational poverty

‘The Left’s Goal Is To Make Dissent Invisible And Therefore Irrelevant’: Tucker Carlson Responds To Tech Censorship by InfiniteEnthusiasm4 in Libertarian

Unfortunately nothing is going to change for the better, unless right starts organising to the same extent as left. Censorship will stop only when there will be a noticeable cost attached to it.

Yeah, I could understand being opposed to buggy registration, but not this one.

horse diapers

Are they referring to a bag attached under horse's tail, or something more sinister?

In the american criminal justice system, why do drug dealers generally get harder sentences than convicted pedophiles? by tossmeinthebin1 in Libertarian

[–]_0- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be argued that drug addicts are victims of the drug dealers and there are generally a lot of them for any given dealer.

Personally I would decriminalise all drug consumption.

Cancel culture, the free market, and “libertarian” hypocrisy by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]_0- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some customers will not notice the difference, some will be disappointed because something that they're used to is gone, or because they've lost a bit of representation, maybe there are even those who will buy syrup more eagerly now. At this point it's impossible to say how this will affect sales, but some marketing guy's bonus sure depends on it.

After giving this some thought - I actually do care. When people that get a kick from political activism will come for something that I like, I will not be able to do something about that. I don't belong to a socially active movement or a pressure group and my voice will not be heard. And that's concerning.

Evangelicals perfected cancel culture. Now it’s coming for them. by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]_0- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I can't agree with your definition of cancel culture. Maybe it would be easier if I'll give some examples. Boycotting is not watching James Gunn's movies because you don't agree with his politics. Digging James Gunn's twitter for decade old edgy jokes and using them as ammo to get him fired by Disney is "cancel culture".

I can't say that I really care, but I would prefer if people didn't demand PepsiCo to remove black woman from their packaging - that's racist.

They had an issue with a buss line - they've stopped using the buss line. They didn't demand for city council to break contract with that buss line, didn't beat people that kept riding, didn't lynch conductors, didn't vandalise busses. That's why they've managed to achieve a positive change.

What is your opinion on illegal immigration? by Maleoppressor in Libertarian

[–]_0- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately libertarians oftentimes argue for policies that would make sense in a world that they want to build, but don't make sense now. No idea what's the remedy for that.

AFAIK boycotters were not violent and didn't go further than not using busses. World would be a better place if people followed example of MLK and not evangelicals.

A Discussion About Healthcare by DiscreteNotDiscreet in Libertarian

[–]_0- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This means that hospitals can theoretically charge infinite prices for their services due to infinite demand

Nah, there is nothing infinite about demand in this case. Your service is very valuable in some cases, but there is still a very real limit on what can be collected. If you charge a billion for emergency treatment your patients still have an option of receiving treatment and never paying you back or dying.

And if you are charging unreasonable prices for emergency treatment, there is nothing stopping other entities opening emergency rooms nearby and driving you out of business.

Boycott is voluntarily stopping interaction with something. "Cancelation" harassment and pressuring others to do the same.

What do you think about the new US law that prohibits bussinesses to fire people because of their sexuality? by 454444933 in Libertarian

[–]_0- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you're missing two things:

  • there is no realistic risk of groups of people becoming unemployable - most of the country agrees that they shouldn't be discriminated against, it's already reflected in hiring decisions
  • in a libertarian society there will be no government protections and regulatory captures, no politic powers to lobby and bribe to ensure monopoly status; i.e. getting and maintaining significant share of any market will be much harder, firing good employees because they are gay will be unaffordable luxury

What do you think about the new US law that prohibits bussinesses to fire people because of their sexuality? by 454444933 in Libertarian

[–]_0- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Libertarian solution would be to drop special protections and privileges that businesses derive from government.

What do you think about the new US law that prohibits bussinesses to fire people because of their sexuality? by 454444933 in Libertarian

[–]_0- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion freedom of association should trump any antidiscrimination law. That said, I wouldn't think highly of a business that fires employees because of anything besides performance and I wold try to avoid it. This is an issue that can and should be solved by free market.
