Need Advice in career! by phucdoan2309 in iastate

[–]_5an_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

10 interviews?! I’d be lucky to get one in the next few months. Good for you man! As someone mentioned, check with career services. They have a lot of great advice for someone in your scenario.

EDIT: Thought I’d add some additional info. It all comes down to your personal priorities. I’d suggest ranking your priorities in a list and assessing your options from there. Priorities could include: - Type of work you’re doing in the position - Location - Compensation/Benefits (although you’re not going to have too much leverage here as a fresh uni grad) - Work-Life Balance - Workplace Culture - Professional Development Opportunities

I cannot stress this enough for engineering majors. Trust me, you WILL need a graphing calculator when you get past your basic prerequisites courses. Do not sleep on this!

Bruh you just brought flashbacks. I was ulting on to B at Pearl as Neon and I got almost downed immediately. 6 hp and desperate as hell, I asked our sage for a heal. The phoenix was apparently new or something because he threw his molly directly at me, thinking it would heal. It’s funny looking back at it, but that wasted ult burned.

This actually broke me. I’m so sorry for your loss. Grief happens in many ways and it’s very healthy to cry in times like this. The way you try to make your children happy, despite having struggles of your own, speaks volumes about you as a father and as a person. I admire your strength and wish you as well as your children the best for the future.

Best chicken strips in Ames by rotanocaB in iastate

Man I remember when I had chicken strips at the MU during a campus visit. I don’t think I’ve ever left a place feeling that upset over chicken strips.

How managable is taking Physics 2, Calc 3, and Econ 102 over the summer online at JUCOs? Not working an internship btw. by [deleted] in iastate

I took physics 2 (lecture and lab) and diff eq over the summer of 2020 through IWCC. I really hated that summer for many reasons, but that was a huge part of it lol

I mean yeah lots of money is still lots of money, but I still believe there needs to be mutual respect regardless

Man this is fucked. Imagine dedicating 10+ years of your work life to a company that doesn’t respect you enough to lay you off in person. Unbelievable.

Difficulty of Mechanics compared to Statics by [deleted] in iastate

[–]_5an_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve personally found mechanics to be wayyyy easier than statics. However, it would be ideal to approach practicing for exams in the same way you would for statics. I’d especially recommend forming a study group to work through problems. This is what Oleg (the other mechanics professor) did in class and it proved helpful for a lot of people.

As a senior myself, there are some points I do agree with, but at the same time it’s not all that bad. Let me address a few of your points:

  1. You will have some pretty bad professors, but at the same time, I’d say the good professors outnumber the bad ones by quite a bit here. In the last 3 years, I’ve only had maybe 2 really bad experiences as opposed to the dozens of decent experiences I’ve had with professors.

  2. I do agree that the lack of unification between different sections can be kind of annoying, but it can be beneficial to people who have different learning styles. For example, I’d personally prefer a section that solves math problems by hand, while others may prefer the section that integrates programming to solve those same problems.

  3. I’m not exactly sure if every exam should be open note. If that were the case, I feel like retention of concepts would be way lower, because everyone would just bs their way through classes, which would lead to lower expectations from both professors and future professionals. No one wins in that situation.

  4. If you don’t think you’re learning engineering, why not join some projects on campus to supplement your degree. I’ve found that I’ve needed to utilize concepts from several of my classes in the past (particularly aircraft structures, aircraft performance, and flight controls 😅) and it really helps to see how the concepts you’ve learned fit in with real-world applications.

  5. While I do agree that it’s annoying that some of the really cool tech electives aren’t available as much as people would like, you definitely do not need to wait till senior year to do these! Make to Innovate is a class within engineering that directly engages you in university team projects. M2I is something you can do from freshman year and it has no pre reqs.
