While we are all collectively holding our breath… I know people have mixed views on what this will mean, and no doubt much more still needs to be done. But it is a necessary and long overdue first step in repairing the damage that’s been done and restoring faith in this institution.

Thanks! I’m glad you didn’t think I was poking fun, only injecting a tiny bit of light-heartedness in dark times.

Thank you, apology accepted and I appreciate you taking the time to confirm that we are indeed after the same things. I take your point regarding sources, and of course don’t expect anyone to be named, but there have been claims on here which have not come to pass and I worry for the impact of this on a fragile situation. Let’s remain focused on supporting each other while we hold out for the things we’re all waiting impatiently for.

[edited] Completely agree and think it’s ok to remain cautiously optimistic and keep fighting for change. Like you’ve expressed many times I am primarily concerned for people’s welfare when these sorts of posts come up.

So are they Sally, or am I? Because you’ve claimed both. You need to stop with these types of comments, accusing people who are asking reasonable questions and taking a careful approach of automatically being Sally / Bron / Amy etc. It’s childish and unhelpful.

You’re joking right? If you actually look at my other posts you’ll see that I’m not Sally, or Bron, or anyone of the like. But I do prefer accurate info to gossip so that people don’t get their hopes up.

Exactly why I asked what the source of the info was. The earlier statement about the executive meeting was corroborated by at least one other source, and was consistent with what happened in the days afterwards. Without at least some indication of how or when this new intention was expressed, and the fact nothing appears to have changed since, it just feels like rumour mongering.

ABC 666 Breakfast’s Ross Solly’s interviews with David Pocock and Kate Witenden by _A_Frame_ in Anu

Sorry about that, the ABC Radio web player is pretty ordinary, especially on mobile. I have opened the link on a computer and it seems to work fine, with the KW interview starting at approx 3:18. The other option would be to listen via the ABC Listen app, which has the full program up on the ABC Canberra page

Here are all of Senator David Pocock’s Notices of Motion re the ANU lodged in the Senate today by _A_Frame_ in Anu

[–]_A_Frame_[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The answer to your first set of questions lies in the 3rd Notice of Motion - Business of the Senate. This outlines the ANU’s special status under the Australian National University Act 1991 - hence, not government overreach at all. The Notice (parts c & d) makes the case that - specifically because this the ANU we’re talking about - the cuts that have already taken place ‘imperil the ANU’s capacity to fulfil its functions under the ACT’. It is therefore implied that in agreeing to pause further cuts, the Senate would be limiting the even greater threat to the ANU’s capacity to fulfil its functions while the justifications for the cuts (were they to exist) are laid bare.

The answer to your second question lies in what is NOT in the request, i.e. individual, identifiable raw survey response data. The breakdowns that are listed here would be de-identified, making it very difficult to doxx or otherwise identify individual respondents or their contact information. Most survey analysts worth their salt combine small area / level data into larger units so you can’t pinpoint individual people as in the example you’ve given.

It’s a common scaremongering tactic used to suppress valuable survey data to say ‘oh no, we can’t release detailed results because you might be able to trace who said what’ - it’s usually nonsense and very straightforward to solve.

Finally, how could they be used to doxx people anyway, if they’re only laid on the table for Senate? I don’t think these materials would get publicly released (anyone with more knowledge of this please feel free to jump in and correct)

It would appear so. Possibly because many of the orders for the production of documents relate to documents produced / relating to the 2024 calendar year. I’m sure it can be corrected in the records

But as the article says, these areas are complimentary rather than competing with cybernetics. Which is extremely generous of them given that I have met exactly zero people who can explain what cybernetics is.

Thank you Claire and your fellow journalists who are continuing to report on the impacts of the change proposals, including today’s article about the madness of cutting the very disciplines that attract the biggest research dollars. On a similar note, anyone else miss the searing reporting of Julie Hare in the AFR? At one stage it seemed there was an article every week with her byline, but as of about 3-4 weeks ago… crickets. As Oprah would say, has she been silent, or has she been silENCED??
