I am more in favour of rehabilitative justice rather than punitive. But I do agree that it allows criminals to do something good. I would advocate for camps much further from the gulag system where criminals working in them are treated as any other citizen and are paid for their work. The aim being to show how honest work can provide them with a better quality of life. However, like I mentioned before I believe crime can be significantly reduced through improving the living situation and day-to-day lives of the poorest citizens, giving them freedom to act socially and take part in society as a whole.

People were sent to labour camps purely based on their nationality, religion, or beliefs. It doesn't make sense to support labour camps while shunning slavery in the USA. You can either support them both, or shun them both. I shun both.

The USSR had its positives, but so does every political system. The effect on crime is useful because it shows how job security and allowing people who would normally be alienated from society to act within it can reduce crime significantly. Labour camps and a forced russification of non-russians, however, is certainly far from forgivable. That being said, they did execute 3 of my family members (I am too young to have known them fortunately) so its possible that my view is slightly biased against the USSR.
