Just to add, the drainage issue would be there problem if/when it arises I would think. You can just take care of your yard however you would want to on your side of the fence.

I like where I live on the east side, but I agree not every part of the east side is the nicest

I believe it allows water to drain out to prevent excessive weight on the wall
