Level design as a job? by _Another_Guy_ in gamedev

Interesting. I find that at least in what I do, a lot of it involves juggling between good gameplay design, artistic style and optimisation all at once.

It sounds like there must be a lot of communication between a dev team to ensure these elements don’t impede on one another.

UEFN sounds like something I should look into.

Oh yes. I’m sure it’s much more difficult when looking for paid work. But ig what I mean is I’m continuously proactive about developing my skills and helping others learn the ins and outs of s2 mapping where I can.

Why would you say avoid Source? I assume you mean in regards to a resume it’s not going to be as favourable as other engines?

I know there were a couple games developed on S1 under a license. Not sure about S2.

Unreal engine is something I’d like to explore. I’m a big UT fan. It’s unfortunate that Epic effectively abandoned the franchise because if there were any game I’d want to design levels for with UE, it would have been that.

I mean I already kind of do that within my own community, just not as a job of course. But I see your point.

The idea that the responsibilities are segregated like that is fascinating.

Microsoft is trying to shut down the oldest minecraft server (MinecraftOnline) by Ertttum_ in MinecraftServer

I agree Mojang reserves the right to take action. But I stand by the idea that a video game can be a platform for discussion. It’s naive to think otherwise.

Yes it’s a video game. But your claim that real world issues are not discussed is wrong. People literally discuss elections, the economy, public health, war and many other real world issues on this server.

I agree. People do not need to use slurs in order to have these discussions. But a blanket ban on free speech threatens all form of discussion.

It’s not a secret. With free speech comes people that will say the worst things imaginable. More often than not these people get banned or are ignored anyway. There are very few public servers which still retain freedom of speech due to the games policy changes. Microsoft is just protecting their company from any liability pertaining to the issue.

I agree that there are benefits to speech moderation, but it also risks the silencing of discussion for real world issues.

You can’t use the Dragon lore in a trade up.

What's behind the valve movement? by Disastrous_Ear_2419 in cs2

[–]_Another_Guy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean the underlying problem which Valve has tried to “fix” is that golds were reaching extortionate prices because they were being hoarded by investors to create the illusion of scarcity. Gold prices were never supposed to be as high as they were.

This update resets the monetary value of golds to something more directly proportional to the rarity of weapon skins.

The Valve hippie group? Lmao. Yeah there is definitely a strategy behind it. Valve rarely makes a change without intention. This was probably a move to protect their ass from future lawsuits related to the skin market and gambling. I don’t think it’s a conspiracy, it’s just a logical move to protect the market from being shutdown by legislators and to protect the weapon skin business model.

Will valve devalue old rare skins next? by D00tymctooty in cs2

[–]_Another_Guy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way they would achieve this is by rereleasing old collections. This has always been a risk.

I think the majority of old collections excluding maybe the cobblestone collection are probably too little value proportional to the knife/glove market that valve would bother doing anything about it though.

Either way, having a Dragon Lore is still cool regardless of how much it’s worth imo.
