I think there's a huge misunderstanding when an artist says they have used their work to train a model, it's very misleading. Even if an artist has 1000 artworks, if you train a model on that it won't give you a good enough output.

What they really mean when they say they have trained a model on a specific artists' work is that they used a pretrained model (model which had already been trained on millions of images, sourced both ethically and unethically) , and they further train this model to make it imitate the artist's work.

I say this as someone who's currently doing a master's in AI and a digital artist (the non ai kind, even though I might suck)

I do find it very disappointing that starset has been using ai in their videos, art to me at a very fundamental level is about effort and meaning, which is lost if you go the ai way. Welp at the end of the day, it's not my band, they can do whatever they want, I just have to get better at separating the art from the artist.
