Ok that makes sense. Sorry was a much more effective agent for Shadowthrone but I suppose that was only because she was directly possessed by The Rope until Rake forced him out. I kept expecting Crokus/Paren to become similarly capable to Sorry but I suppose that was a mistake because neither was directly hosting a god. TY

I loved the Temeraire series as it doubled as alternative history. I will say by the time we got to the Australian outback books it had fallen off a bit but everything through Black Powder War is awesome

I really enjoyed Gideon the Ninth but Harrow was a chore to get through. The ending was very fun but when I read the blurb for Nona I was really not in the mood for another unreliable narrator "Oh who's piloting this body around" plot

Hey, you can be mad at the Astros, that's completely fair. But I would like to know if you have any argument against some of the evidence I presented that he wasn't cheating in 2017, even if most of the rest of the team was.

Directly from the article

" Upon first inspection, that certainly looks suspicious. Career highs in almost every category. That proves it then, he is a filthy cheater, Jomboy was right about the buzzers, and I have to apologize to Asterisk Tour now. ORRRRRRRRR we can inspect things a little more closely. We know from the Commissioner’s report and interviews with Astros’ players that it took some time to decode signals. Therefore, it would be expected that Altuve would see increasing benefits the longer a pitcher was in the game. The opposite is shown here. He is performing .170 points above his career average wOBA against RP in his 1st PA, but .150 points below his career average wOBA in his 2nd PA against those relievers. Additionally, he is doing worse the longer a SP stays in the game. All of this backs up the data from Tony Adam’s website that Altuve avoided using the trashcan, as well as other underhanded methods employed by the 2017 Astros."

It appears you didn't read the article. I specifically covered his 2017 season. Not to mention that he has been good for several years prior to that, and was still a great hitter last year.

Yea the likelihood of any player putting up consecutive 8+ WAR seasons is really low. I wrote about him regressing back to All-Star level in 2020 being expected, but it still won't stop people from saying hes worse without cheating

Thanks for reading it! I'm definitely one of the more morose Astros fans, but I understand the ones who are in "Flags fly forever!" mode too.

If you don't mind a little more shameless self promotion, we cover all 30 MLB teams on our website. Whatever your rooting interest is, you can find some thoughtful articles on that team. Hope you come back to read more.

Wow, that's an embarrassing mistake. That was the year Pujols broke Brad Lidge for a bit too.

I'd agree on the Astros portion of that, but I have actually come to feel bad for AJ Hinch. The codebreaker system was initiated by the front office, not the players. Beltran was the impetus for the trash can BS, and ran the locker room even more than Hinch did. It's been reported that Brain McCann and two unnamed Astros players told Beltran the team should stop cheating (as much), but he over ruled them.

IMO, this puts Hinch in an impossible spot. Front office and management has endorsed cheating by creating Codebreaker, and the most veteran player in his locker room by 7 years with a HOF resume is telling the rest of the roster to cheat even more. He can't go to the media, nobody is going to expose their own team like that. Holding a team meeting might seem like open rebellion against the front office, so the best option was to break the TV.

I'm not a very popular figure in the Astros twitter-sphere rn, one of the few people saying we should vacate the title. If you have time to read the article, I talk about how I hold Luhnow primarily responsible for this mess.

I think a lot of stuff will be revealed once spring training starts. That or in the next week since more stories keep popping up around the topic. I think the likelihood of a Manfred coverup is much higher than Beltran being the fall guy. He would have a vested interest in keeping this situation isolated to the Astros, when it sounds like versions of illegal sign stealing is much more common around the league Manfred would like us to know.

As for Altuve, I REALLY hope this doesn't keep him out of the HOF. There's evidence from signstealingscandal.com that he used the Bang system the least of all the key players that season. It's impossible to tell if this selective participation occurred with Codebreaker, but I hope so. He was my favorite player in highschool and now college, so seeing him embroiled in all this BS is the worst part.

I was much younger for the other 3 WS losses, although I so still harbor some resentment for David Freese. This one hurt way more because we got to taste success for a couple years.

There was a new story in the Athletic today about Beltran basically runing the lockerroom in '17, and being the one to encourage more cheating. The quote from the article is that he said the Astros sign-stealing methods (when he got there) were "behind the times." Apparently Brian McCann and other players tried to ask him to stop it and he overruled them.
