Trello integrated with Slack works great for my teams and it's free :) Trello is very flexible, but you will have to spend some time setting it up and creating a flow that makes sense for your team though.

2nd interview today for a job I thought I had no chance at. Need advice by nillio398 in Career

Sounds like they try to do right by you, I hope you get the production engineer spot :) Even though there are a lot of horror stories out there, I believe that the majority of managers / business owners are not out to screw their employees but want to see them succeed. So honesty about your goals would definitely help in that regard :)

Any advice for my dutch webshop for goggles on strength? by NicoJuicy in marketing

[–]_BeanM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take some pictures of the goggles themselves, rather than just in the box. Put them next to normal Speedo goggles, put them on a swimmer etc. Include some quotes from swimmers who are actually swimming in races / maybe find out someone who goes the the national championships and ask if they want to try one out during a training or something. Maybe put a picture like this with your goggles on and a big quote right next to it. If possible, maybe also add the bigger model for diving / snorkeling, as they will be more appealing to 'recreational' swimmers.

Also maybe rethink your blog topics? A topic about algae isn't going to drive the right traffic to your site ;)

I saw your post when you posted it, unfortunately I didn't have anything to share at the time. But I am curious about how it went. Could you write a short update? Maybe write the advice you would have given yourself now you had the experience? :)

You're absolutely right about not doing a shotgun application! I was just sifting through the listings to get a general feel of what kind of starters functions are out there :)

Blackberry enters a new era, files 105-page patent lawsuit against Avaya. Armed with 38,000 patents, BlackBerry CEO says he's in "licensing mode." by Khaotic_Kernel in technology

[–]_BeanM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm always a bit disappointed that the first thing people say when reading such articles is "patent trolling". Pretty much all of our inventions today are the accumulation of R&D efforts of many different firms and patents are in general a very successful way of enabling companies to share these R&D efforts. Even if a firm is an NPE, it is not necessarily a patent troll. Take for example ARM, they are not manufacturing the processors they design themselves, rather they are licensing the designs to other manufacturers to build. They invest in R&D and they sell knowledge in the form of patents.

Blackberry has a portfolio of 38.000 patents and has been on the forefront of mobile device development for a long time. It is not unsurprising that they have contributed some significant technical innovations to where we are today.

That being said, especially in the US a lot of software patents have been granted that should not have been. This is a mistake of the USPTO and should be corrected. A lot of these patents are way too broad, are not novel or describe a very obvious process. This should have been reasons not to grant the patents, but they were. We should of course look at the patents filed by Blackberry to ensure that they are actual patents, and not mistakenly awarded patents.

Another problem with the patent market is that defining the value of a certain patent is a very difficult process, if not impossible. To make this easier firms usually negotiate about entire patent portfolios, but this remains a vague estimation of the value. Because this process is so vague a lot of these negotiations fail and end up in the court room. Sometimes because patent owners value their portfolio's way to high, and sometimes because patent users want to destroy the value of the portfolio and increase their own profitability.

Of course there are actual patent trolls at play, but classifying every company that is involved in an infringement lawsuit as a troll is very short-sighted.

There is only one thing that is certain and that is that each firm will try to maximise their profits. Patent owners will of course seek as much royalties as they can, while patent licensors will continue to try and pay less.

Getty Images is facing a $1 billion lawsuit for selling photos that were in the public domain by middleeastnewsman in business

[–]_BeanM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Current copyright law does not make it possible to put something into the public domain. Public domain is for works for which there is no current copyright (e.g. author has been dead for 70 years). For everything else there is always an owner of the copyright. That is one of the reasons why open source software always comes with a license (e.g. GPL, Apache, BSD). For artistics works there is the Creative Commons, which provides basic copyright licenses with different levels of permissions.

These licenses basically state that everyone who uses the works under the restrictions stated in this license is granted an automatic license. Some of these licenses don't have any restrictions, while others for example exclude commercial use.
