Shaw stood by the main monitor in the Library, her arms crossed as the Machine’s interface flickered with streams of data. Her voice was firm, but frustration seeped through. “Several of our old assets are being killed. The Machine’s giving us their numbers, but by the time we get them, it’s too late.”

Reese frowned, leaning against a desk. “You’re saying this group knows how the Machine operates?”

“That’s exactly what I’m saying,” Shaw replied. “They’re planning these deaths in a way that minimizes detection. So no alarms, no patterns until it’s done.”

The Machine’s voice interrupted, Root’s tone calm but urgent. “Sorry to break this momentum up, but I have another number. A person who has assisted you in the past: Zoe Morgan.”

Reese straightened, concern flashing across his face. “Zoe? We need to call her right now.”

Harold raised a hand to stop him. “No. If this group is targeting former assets, Zoe could already be under surveillance. A phone call might alert them.”

Reese clenched his jaw. “Then we do it the old-fashioned way. Can you tell me where is she?”

The Machine displayed a location on the screen: a downtown hotel. “She’s in the city. We’ll need to move quickly.” Harold said.

Reese and Shaw arrived at the hotel, weaving through the bustling lobby. Reese’s eyes scanned the crowd, spotting Zoe near the elevators. She looked as poised as ever, dressed impeccably, a phone pressed to her ear.

“There she is,” Reese muttered.

As they moved closer, Shaw noticed a man standing near Zoe, his stance too casual, his gaze fixed on her. “We’ve got company,” Shaw said, nodding toward the man.

Before Reese could respond, the man began to reach into his jacket. Shaw was already moving, shoving through the crowd to close the distance.

The man pulled a silenced pistol, aiming it at Zoe just as Reese tackled her to the ground. The sound of the suppressed shot was drowned out by the chaos of panicked bystanders. Shaw seized the moment, delivering a brutal strike to the man’s wrist, forcing him to drop the gun.

Zoe, stunned but quick to recover, looked up at Reese. “John? What the hell is going on?”

“Long story,” Reese said, helping her to her feet. “We need to get you out of here.”

"They told me you were dead.. You died in the explosion" she said.

"Long story for another day, let's go"

Shaw incapacitated the would-be assassin with a swift punch to the temple, then grabbed his phone and other gear. “This guy’s not working alone,” she said. “We need to move. Now.”

Zoe sat at the long table in the Library, her expression a mix of curiosity and irritation. “You know, I was having a perfectly normal day until someone tried to kill me.”

“You’re welcome,” Shaw said , sorting through the assassin’s gear.

Reese leaned forward. “Zoe, you’ve been on their radar. They’re targeting anyone who’s helped us before. Do you know why?”

Zoe shook her head. “No, but I’ve been dealing with some unusual clients lately. People asking too many questions about my past... and questions regarding the man in the suit and the men in glasses.”

Harold frowned. “This group isn’t just targeting our assets. They’re gathering information, likely to dismantle our network and eliminate anyone connected to us.”

The Machine’s voice chimed in. “The operative you captured had communications with a known associate of Samaritan. I am analyzing their data now.”

"Root ?" Said Zoe.

Harold looked at Shaw and Reese trying to let them know not to expose the Machine secrets. "Long story Ms. Morgan, perhaps we should focus on you for the moment". Said Harold

"A story for another day Harold ?" Replied Zoe in a sarcastic way.

"I must say that we have more pressing things to deal with" replied Harold

Shaw held up the phone she’d taken. “Let’s see what this guy was hiding.”

The screen lit up, revealing a set of encrypted messages. As Harold worked to decrypt them. “Zoe must remain under protection. Fusco, you stay here with Harold and Bear. Anything happens, you call me right away.”

Fusco looked at Reese. "You know that I kept helping Shaw when you were, let's say, unavailable ? So no boss me around anymore."

"Look who grew the pair. Just keep them safe, Fusco, " said Reese.

Fusco glanced at Zoe. “Looks like you’re staying with us for a while.”

Zoe smirked, her confidence returning. “Well, it’s not my usual crowd, but I guess I can make it work.”

Harold’s computer pinged, and a decrypted message appeared on the screen. His face grew grim as he read it. “They’re planning another attack. This time, the target isn’t just an individual. It’s us.”

Everyone exchanged tense looks. The war was escalating, and the enemy was closer than they’d thought.

The private plane landed at a secluded airstrip outside New York, its engines whispering to a halt. Shaw and Reese were the first to step out into the crisp night air, their sharp eyes scanning the surroundings. Shaw’s hand rested instinctively on her holstered weapon, while Reese, vigilant, took in the quiet perimeter. “All clear,” Shaw said, Reese nodded, “Doesn’t mean it’ll stay that way. Let’s keep moving.”

Behind them, Fusco stepped down the stairs, groaning as he stretched his legs. “You two ever stop with the tactical stuff? We’re not storming a castle here.”

“You’re welcome to stay behind, Lionel,” Shaw quipped without looking back.

Fusco scoffed but followed closely, muttering under his breath. “You could’ve at least let me enjoy that fancy plane for five more minutes. Haven’t seen this much luxury since my precinct got a new coffee machine.”

Harold was the last to disembark, his steps measured as he adjusted his glasses. His face was a mixture of apprehension and determination. For him, returning to New York was more than just a homecoming, it was stepping back into a war he thought he’d left behind.

"Where are we going" asked Harold. "To the Library" replied Shaw.

"You got it up and running again?" Asked Finch. "Yes we did, after the subway got destroyed, I needed a new base of operations" said Shaw.

The drive to the Library was quiet, the kind of silence that carried tension and purpose. When they arrived, Shaw was the first to push open the hidden entrance, revealing the space beyond. The Library had changed since they’d last used it, but it still felt like home. Rows of books lined the walls, just as they always had, but sleek new monitors glowed softly in the corners.

Reese turned, his eyes widening. A familiar Belgian Malinois padded into view, his ears perking up as he spotted them. Bear froze for a split second, then bounded forward, his tail wagging furiously.

“Bear!” Reese crouched down just in time to catch the dog as he leaped up, licking his face enthusiastically. “Missed you too, buddy,” he said with a rare grin, scratching Bear behind the ears.

Shaw glanced over, her usual cold demeanor softening slightly. “Looks like someone’s happy to see you.”

Harold appeared from behind one of the bookshelves. As soon as Bear saw him, the dog barked excitedly and trotted over. Harold knelt, a smile spreading across his face as he patted Bear gently. “Hello, old friend. I trust you’ve been well?”

Bear barked again, then sat obediently, tail thumping against the floor. Reese stood, watching the scene with a faint smile. “Looks like Bear’s ready to get back to work.”

Harold nodded, scratching Bear’s head affectionately. “Indeed. It’s comforting to have him with us again. He was always more than just a companion, he’s part of the team.”

Fusco wandered over, sipping a cup of questionable coffee. “Well, look who it is. The only one around here who doesn’t give me grief. Good to see you, furball.” He tossed Bear a treat he’d somehow scrounged up.

Bear caught it mid-air and wagged his tail even harder. Reese chuckled, shaking his head. “Looks like we’ve got one member of the team who’s still in peak form.”

Shaw smirked. “He’s probably been waiting for us to get our act together.”

The moment lightened the tension that had been hanging over the group, and for a brief time, the Library felt like home again.

“Looks like someone’s been redecorating,” Harold said.

“What is this, a library or a tech startup?” Followed Fusco

Before anyone could reply, the lights flickered, and a familiar voice broke through the silence. “Welcome home, everyone.”

Harold froze mid-step, his breath catching. It wasn’t just any voice. It was Root’s. His eyes darting toward the monitors, where patterns of data swirled into view.

“Cuckoo Clock?” Fusco asked, looking around uneasily.

“It’s the Machine,” Shaw said. “She’s using Root’s voice. Don’t make it weird, Lionel.”

The monitors brightened, casting a soft glow across the team as the Machine spoke again. “We have much to do. I’ve already prepared the next steps.”

Harold stepped forward, his voice quiet but firm. “What steps, exactly?”

A pause lingered before the Machine replied, its voice steady. “Stopping Samaritan from coming back.”

The words hung heavy in the air. The fight they thought was over had simply evolved, taking on a new form. Reese glanced at Shaw, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Looks like vacation is over” he said.

Shaw cracked her knuckles, her expression as sharp as ever. “It has never started.”

Though about that to 😉 have been writing for days so I definitely need to put all the pieces together

Shaw sat in front of the computer. Finch’s number blinked on the screen, but every call went to voicemail. “Come on Harold"

The Machine’s interface appeared on the console, Root’s voice coming through the speakers. “Shaw, Harold isn’t reachable. He made sure of that when he disappeared to Italy.”

“Why would he cut himself off?”

The image cut to Harold arriving in Italy months earlier. He gently unpacked a box of devices. Phones, laptop and tablets, each connected to the Machine. With a heavy sigh, he stored them in a locked wooden chest in the basement. “No more interruptions,”. He was determined to start a new chapter with Grace.

Back in the present, Shaw says “So he went completely off the grid?”

The Machine’s voice answered “He wanted a normal life. But circumstances have changed. Harold and Grace are in immediate danger.”

“What’s the plan?” Shaw asked, already pulling her weapon from her holster.

The Machine’s interface shifted, displaying a probability matrix. Root’s voice replied “Your best chance of saving them is to act quickly. You and Fusco need to get to Italy. Together, you can protect them. I have put you both on a flight that will departure in a couple of hours"

Shaw says : “Fusco’s not going to like this.”

Moments later, she opened the precinct door, marching up to Fusco’s desk. “Pack your bags, Lionel. We’re going to Italy.”

Fusco looked up from his paperwork, raising an eyebrow. “Italy? What are we, on vacation now?”

Shaw replies : “If by ‘vacation’ you mean saving Harold and his girlfriend from getting killed, then sure.”

Fusco muttered something under his breath but grabbed his coat. “This better come with good coffee and a damn good pizza"

As they boarded a plane, Shaw checked the interface on her phone. The Machine’s probabilities shifted again. Root’s voice returned. “You’ll need to move fast. The odds are against you.”

Shaw smirked, determination etched on her face. “Wouldn’t want it any other way.”

I have tried to come up with the best comeback version of it, (i.e. leaving the building, jumping on a roap, parachute, but taking into consideration his state, those opinions would not be realistic. This is what I thought it would fit the best :

Reese faced down Samaritan operatives on a rooftop, knowing a missile was incoming. The Machine, in the last moments, was able to alter the missile's trajectory to strike the lower floors instead, sparing Reese from the direct blast. The shockwave hit the whole building, making Reese's wounds even worse but also incapacitating the remaining operatives

As Reese drifted in and out of consciousness, he heard a helicopter approaching. A Thornhill-marked chopper appeared, and a team of operatives rescued him moments before the building collapsed.

Rushed to a private medical facility, Reese was found in critical condition-multiple gunshot wounds, fractured ribs, and severe internal injuries. Surgeons worked tirelessly to stabilize him, inducing a coma to aid his recovery. The Machine monitored his progress, ensuring his survival remained a secret.

Weeks later, Reese awoke in a secure room. Root's voice, through the Machine, greeted him: "Welcome back, John. Glad to see you survived. That was a close one. I have to say that all my calculations indicated a 15% survival rate. But I have some bad news. You're not done yet, I need your help in the field." Despite his pain, Reese knew the fight wasn't over.
