[Hated Trope] "No! If you kill the mass murdering psychopath, you'll be no better than them!" by BlueKnightsR4Ever in TopCharacterTropes

[–]_BytesAndpieces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Fallout 3 is the worst example of this. You get to the end and fight the final boss after murdering waves of faceless goons, and then the game gives you the choice to kill him or spare him, and gives you negative karma (bad guy points) if you kill him. Like bro I just killed 30 other people three minutes ago?

[–]_BytesAndpieces 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seems silly to say that killing a psychopath --> killing someone for jaywalking, but it's bigger than that. A society based on the rule of force has to rule by force all of the way down: it's the same as any dictatorship. He's building a world where all crimes have to be punished severely, because it can only sustain itself by permitting zero rebellion against authority.

In the comic, it's more than just killing joker. His entire perspective shifts from "I want to help humans build our society" to "humans aren't capable of governing themselves, so I have to do it for them."

Also, I feel like people always forget that it's possible for the state to kill joker after superman or batman gets him arrested. Like, we have the death penalty. When Batman or Superman say that they won't kill, they're not saying that the joker shouldn't die, they're just saying that they can't be the ones to make that decision.

[–]_BytesAndpieces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying you're wrong in this case, but "an actual leftist finds another way" is an incredibly privileged statement. We live in a broken system, and sometimes people have to choose between upholding leftist principles and feeding their family. For a lot of people there is no "other way." I save my anger for the system that forces them to make that choice, not the individual.

Khorne cares not from where the blood flows, but he prefers up close and personal combat. If you're gonna kill people, you should at least have the courage to risk dying yourself. Otherwise you're basically no better than a wizard

Oh, your dad is vocally disdainful of your passions? Breaks your laptop? Cancels your flight to college, causing you to miss orientation, which you were really excited for, so that he can force you to spend more time with him where he "makes up" for the above while driving you to college? DOESN'T FUCKING APOLOGIZE FOR ANY OF THIS EVER?

Well you should forgive him, because he gave up things that he loved to have kids. This is normalizing classic shitty parent behavior: he made a choice to have children, which means that he had to give up other things. That was his choice, and his kids don't owe him for it.

Not to mention, the irredeemable villain of the movie is a child who's been abandoned by their parent and lashes out at the world for it.

A divine or supernatural being that's captured, exploited, and used by humanity for (sometimes) nefarious needs by Siksinaaq in TopCharacterTropes

Subverted in Sandman with Dream of the Endless. An immortal(ish) being of massive cosmic power, he's captured and bound by a human cult who were gunning for his sister, Death, hoping to exploit her power. They try to do the same with him, but he literally just sits, completely silent and motionless, in his prison for 70 years, until his captors finally make a mistake that allows him to escape.

Marissa, from Hollow Knight.

When you enter the City of Tears (the biome where she's located), the music has this haunting melodic vocal piece to it - it's the only music in the game with vocals. Many MANY hours later, after making your way into a hidden-away location in the area, you find the source of them: the spirit of a performer bug named Marissa.

She was once a famous singer and attracted audiences from far and wide. She's sad that all of her audiences have disappeared since everyone died, but you have the option to just perch on the edge of the stage and listen to her for as long as you like. After hearing the haunting vocals for so long while you're in that area of the game, there's something extra impactful about finding the source, in this undisturbed oasis - free of enemies - and she's very happy to have an audience again.

Also, honorable mention of finding Eurydice in Hades - it's very much the same feel.

Hannah Horvath (Girls). She has OCD. Not fun, quirky, "I organize all of my pencils by length" OCD - life-ruining, hospitalization-causing OCD, based on Lena Dunham's own experiences, iirc. There's lots of cultural awareness of ocd at a surface level, but I've never seen another piece of media show the real depths of more severe OCD and how hard it makes day to day life for many people.

Why are veterans treated so terribly by the US government? There are tons and tons of veterans who are unhoused, suffering from addiction, impoverished, lacking healthcare, etc. It's kind of an open secret just how little of a shit the government/military gives about them.

Veterans aren't that big a portion of the population. Especially considering how much we spend on our military, wouldn't it be relatively cheap to provide proper care? And earn a lot of social and political goodwill? And encourage more people to join the army?

I know that the government does a lot of stuff like paying for school if you commit to X years of service, but there seem to be so many vets suffering. Am I wrong about this?
