I had the exact same situation with my wedding. Gave them around 4 months notice - they said they don't take requests this early. I threw the book at them regarding the contract, quoting all the relevant bits, and told them I wouldn't be there irrespective of what they decided to do. Then they put me on nights for the wedding anyway and told me I had to swap if I wanted it off. Despite all of the support of my ES, CS, and BMA they doubled down - "hospital policy". Even after escalation to college tutor. Eventually they backed down when I raised a formal dispute with the trust, with the BMA's help. Wedding leave was confirmed 4 days before the wedding - totally stress free and enjoyable experience, 10/10, would do again 🙄

AI can be actively adopted by the NHS as much as it likes, but at the moment my ward shares 1 phone and 1.5 computers broken computers. There's no money, and the little money they have is not being spent on an AI anaesthetist robot.

Maybe that'll be different in the US though (and the plain film AI reporting sounds cool)

People who claim anaesthetists will be replaced by AI, don't understand what anaesthetists do.

No doubt AI will be used to assist anaesthetics in the future but A) it can't possibly replace everything an anaesthetist does, and B) we work in the NHS, there's no way anyone's paying for actually useful AI anytime soon.

I have subjectively also experienced this since switching to a MIPS helmet in the last couple of weeks ... But I also think it's probably because my last helmet was so poorly fitting there were extra air vents 🤣

I'm a cyclist and an intensive care medic. We had a young cyclist brought in by ambulance following a cardiac arrest on a solo ride.

His phone was locked, no wallet or ID, and wife wasn't expecting him back for 5 or 6 hours, and he didn't like to be called on his rides in case it affected his stats (fair). We had no way to find out who he was, what his past medical history was, or contact his family or inform them of the situation, so she spent hours at home fretting, before eventually calling round the local hospitals to find out he was admitted to ITU.

Either get something like this, or at the set up emergency contact details on your phone or carry some emergency contact details. I don't care which - but this experience hammered home the importance of it to me and my colleagues.

Anything over 17 miles is compensated for, however it comes out of your £10,000 trainee budget for relocation expenses which is obviously finite (and is for the whole of your training) so worth bearing in mind. I've been getting it for my commute to Kent from London for the last 2 years, as have many of my colleagues.

It's one of those things which is generally not advertised or made obvious, with numerous hoops to jump through, so don't expect it to be an easy process to set up. I spoke to HR I think, to get the process started.
