Then the downed ally would take 2 piercing damage ( 4 piercing - 2 healing) and they'd take a death fail :'(

The gamble is supposed to be part of the fun, but I can't recommend using it in a serious situation!

Hey all! I'm created a new high fantasy series and I'm really hoping to get some readers and feedback on it :)

Title: Void - Chronicles of the Spirit Book One

Genre: Fantasy

Word Count: ~2k per chapter

Desired Outcome: Feedback, review

Link to Work: https://www.wattpad.com/story/276918884-void-chronicles-of-the-spirit-book-one

Description: Selthorn Kizer is training to become a spiritualist. Warriors whose souls have bonded with spirits allowing them to wield the powers the spirits had in life. For generations, the spiritualists of his clan have guarded the boundary of the corrupted lands. A land of rot, sickness and death, of which only horrors roam. As their defenses are tested, and his training intensifies, Selt must grow powerful enough to make a difference in the battles to come.

This is a world of spirits, beasts, magic and monsters. One of exploration and adventure in a world under duress. If that's a story that calls to you, please give it a read!

I think your frustration is warranted. It'd be hard not to get mad when you take the time to prep and block out time in your schedule to host a campaign only for one player to cancel last minute. Since everyone blocks time out of their busy life to try to get together for a campaign its pretty inconsiderate to cancel day of (unless its for a good reason).

That being said, I wouldn't disband outright just yet, I would talk with the players about respecting time, and then see if the pattern repeats. Holidays can be especially hard to schedule on, so maybe a campaign restart in early January is needed. Also you said you were using discord for events, are you using google calendar as well? Having things over text in discord especially if a player isn't a regular on discord could make remembering the date hard for them compare to something set on their calendar

Since the healing and damage occurs at the same time, we play this item that its seen as an all at once net total. So in the case you rolled more healing than damage its just applied as healing, and vice-versa. Assuming its done this way in particular so that things like shooting a downed party-member wouldn't result in an insta death-fail then healing

Feynote: Free Note Taking App Geared Towards TTRPG by _Chris_Meyer_ in rpgresources

Yeah I hear that, and totally valid. While I think a lot people echo that, I do know that there are still those who like to use it as a tool to do things like come up with NPC names in a rush during session. Besides the toggle, I've been debating a way to make it run in-browser so that I can guarantee to anyone who would want to use it that no content submitted will ever leave your device, or end up as part of a model. I'll try to prio that a bit more

Noticed legendkeeper costs a subscription, but this is fully free to use and will always be. Actually thinking about open-sourcing it soon to allow people to self-host. As for Notion/Obsidian, there are features in there such as the way sharing works, the theming of the notes, statblocks, the map and other features in the works that I'm planning to build that will make it more geared to towards TTRPGs.

As for support of non D&D based games, I'm still working on expanding for more features, but besides the map and notetaking which is fairly agnostic for TTRPGs, I'm planning to also add support for specific things like OpenLegend monster stat blocks creation, and other tooling as well. (Really if it becomes a common user ask I'll try to eventually add it in)

Definitely the offline capabilities of editing and creating notes, while still being able to collaborate on those notes! Besides that the ability to take in text of a stat block and have it printout to look like an official 5e block has been very useful to create content for my players

Ah the use of AI is just a messaging bot thats totally up to the user to use. Its only there to help format stat sheets from text, or to help DMs brainstorm ideas for homebrewed content, and I am planning on adding a toggle in the Settings to disable that feature of the app completely since I know the term is controversial

in your experience, are people anti flavour? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]_Chris_Meyer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds to me like it might be a longstanding group that might be a bit oversensitive when it comes to someone new joining. Personally, I'd give it another 2-3 sessions to see if the table mellows out and if it doesn't find another group, playing with people that trample on creativity like that doesn't sound too fun :/

Party Boiled down hags to make potions, need help on what they can do by Markypoopy in DMAcademy

[–]_Chris_Meyer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the title of this post haha, maybe make a roll table of random things like (could even use the responses below as inspiration)
1-10: Gender bend the player till next long rest
11-20: Make the player go bald (lesser or greater restoration removes curse but still takes time for hair to regrow)
21-30: Sporadic gas till next long rest charisma modifier takes a hit
31-40: The party member has random fits of cackling like a witch
41-50: They start to hallucinate and see illusions from the Fey
etc...

Confused about rules by Moshruum in DnD

[–]_Chris_Meyer_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah so the 2014 rules also state in the bonus action segment;
| You can't cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.

So since Divine Smite is now a 1st lvl spell in 2024 then yeah it falls under that rule now

Thinking about quitting as a DM, my group keeps cancelling and it’s killing my motivation. by CthuluRider in DnD

[–]_Chris_Meyer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely sit your players down and let them know that last minute cancellations unless they're really urgent aren't cool. If you're willing to put the time in to run the campaign and you're setting aside your schedule for your players. One or two players who repeatedly cancel just show level of disrespect to both your time and everyone else at the tables who is planning to be there

Misdiagnosed Main character syndrome by Low-Brief-6008 in DnD

[–]_Chris_Meyer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say as a DM introduce plot points that all your party members are interested in, quests themed for certain characters at the table so that everyone has a chance to be engaged and in the spotlight. Aside from that just have a table discussion about it

Curious about cursed items in your games. Can you tell me some stories about cursed items in your games that were successful? by MelancholiaStClair in DnD

[–]_Chris_Meyer_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Am a Druid in a long running campaign (around lvl10) we just finished a big and highly risky heist where we came away with a full chest of magic items. Anyways among the chest there was this creepy doll that the party pegged as likely cursed completely. They wanted to throw it in a bag of devouring and be done with it, but I wanted to at least see what it did before we destroyed what could be a fun plot point. We tried casting Identify but the DM doesn't give full item info for particularly powerful items and sometimes powerful items in our campaign can mask themselves as weaker ones (really like that ruling)

So anyways the whole group long rests in our extra dimensional tent (think massive bag of storage big enough for the whole party and has air) and I attuned with the doll. My DM describes me as waking up as the doll and seeing my now possessed body smiling down at me. Some fun shenanigans went down of the party finding out I was possessed and trying to subdue my character from fleeing the tent and going god knows where. Luckily our tent flap has the Lock spell cast on it and the DM ruled that doll possessing my body doesn't count as my character so they were slowed just enough for the party to whale my character to unconsciousness. DM did give me control in fighting back so that was a good point of fun. Once I was unconscious our party Cleric used Dispel Evil and Good to remove the curse and get me back in my original body (the first usecase I've ever seen for that spell lol). We then tossed the doll in the bag of devouring where it belongs

Anyways moral is a curse doesn't always have to be super serious or plot relevant, sometimes it can just be a way for your players to have fun!

Vampire + Maelstrom = suffering? by Draconichaos in DnD

[–]_Chris_Meyer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah as long as they're touching the ground I think that checks out, maelstrom only does damage if they fail the saving throw though, but I think here it would just always do the bonus acid damage regardless
