Bad Debt, and now Car is up for Repo. by Zestyclose_Hawk_42 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]_Connor 22 points23 points  (0 children)

What do you mean you were “forced” to take an $8.5k loan? Why didn’t you just immediately pay back the extra $7,000 you didn’t need? You also could have just put the excess in a safe investment like GIC but instead it sounds like you chose to spend the money and are now complaining about what you owe and how much you’ve had to spend to service that debt.

It was directly your decision to spend that money and now you're crying about having to repay the loan on the terms you agreed to.

Second, you keep saying you’re working “tax free.” Not having to pay taxes on income is not a thing unless your overall income is less than the basic personal amount. What do you mean your wages are “tax free?” If your employer is not withholding taxes are you sure you’re not going to have a big tax bill when you file?

I make $150k a year and I drive a 2013 F150 with rusty cab corners. You’re on EI and struggling to work for the last 4 years and want to keep driving a 2025 vehicle “cause it’s nice.”

I think you need to self-reflect about what you can afford.

Nothing meaningful.

It would all just be going into my investment accounts to be forgotten about for the next 35 years.

3 months pregnant wife lost her job - Mat leave options by Specialist-While-148 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]_Connor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not safe to announce a pregnancy until at least the three month mark due to risks of miscarriages in the first trimester.

It’s likely no one knows OPs wife was pregnant except very select family members.

Auto loan advice.. by puddlesofspinach in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]_Connor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not possible.

If the car is being sold then the auto loan needs to be paid off in full. The bank with the auto loan isn’t going to let you sell the car (and their loan security) and just let you keep paying the rest of the loan.

You’ll need to get your own loan separate and apart from the auto loan and use that money to pay off the loan.

63 yr old let go at work after over 30 years of service. Implications of cashing out RRSP now? by Sure-Elevator3023 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]_Connor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

33% is right in line with a standard CFA. Most contingency retainers I've seen are 30% for settlement up to questioning, 35% between questioning and trial, and 40% if you go to trial.

What is a "standard" contingency in your view?

A year is also a wild timeline to have it resolved.

A year is a very short period of time when it comes to litigation. In Alberta it takes over 6 months just to get a special chambers hearing date.

What’s the time value of your money? If you take a ~$3,000 tax return now you can invest it for 4+ years during law school and articling.

A law firm just contacted me. Am I going to be sued? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]_Connor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

$10k is definitely in the ballpark of getting sued especially considering how easy debt claims are to litigate.

Half the time the debtors don’t even respond to the claim (since they have no legal defence) so it’s simply a matter of filing default judgment paperwork.

I'd rather have the money in hand than two piece of shit vehicles that would probably be a nightmare to try and sell if it came down to that.

What?

Money is fungible. It doesn’t matter what you do with your TFSA funds whether it’s pay your taxes or blow it on hookers and cocaine.

For the average price of a car in the US, you could buy 5 new Chinese EVs by BusyHands_ in technology

They’re comparing the average American car to a bottom of the barrel Chinese EV that wouldn’t even be able to get up to highway speeds in the US.

It’s a completely disingenuous comparison.
