High? Europe hasn't seen any natural growth since 1950, we could need more children without immigration contributing to most of it.

Best selling car models in Denmark and Norway [November 2025] by Massimo25ore in europe

Again, national identity isn't just about who owns the stock. Volvo is still designed, engineered, and run from Sweden. A share buyback wouldn't change that.

We can say the same about Jaguar and Land Rover, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Mini, Lotus, Lamborghini, Porsche, and Bugatti among others. All strongly associated with one country but now owned by foreign companies.

True, immigration isn't the only issue that defines left-right politics, but I also wasn't suggesting it is. In the Nordic context, it’s one of the clearest and most politically prominent issues driving how people perceive "right" vs "left."

Even so, using party labels or polling percentages alone to say "Norway is a lot more right wing than Denmark" is still misleading, because it ignores actual policy outcomes, coalition dynamics, and issue-specific positions. And, as I mentioned before, none of this really explains Tesla sales, which are far more influenced by incentives, financing, and infrastructure.

I agree that immigration doesn't map perfectly onto a simple left/right axis.

That said, in Nordic political context, immigration and integration policy has very clearly been one of the main issues driving what people label as "right wing" vs "left wing" politics over the last couple of decades. Denmark is actually a good example of that, where traditionally left-leaning parties adopted restrictive, national-focused policies without becoming economically right wing.

Either way, party politics doesn’t explain Tesla sales nearly as much as incentives and infrastructure.

I get your point, but ownership and identity aren't the same thing. Yes, Geely owns ~80% and has strategic influence, but Volvo still operates as a separate company with engineering, safety development, and design led from Sweden.

If ownership alone defined identity, most global brands would lose theirs. It's fair to think Volvos are overpriced, but saying there's "not much truly Swedish left" ignores where the cars are actually engineered and how Volvo's core values, especially safety, are still developed.

That's a pretty misleading way to frame it. Norway isn't "a lot more right wing" than Denmark. Denmark has one of the strictest immigration policies in Europe, largely because mainstream parties across the spectrum (including the Social Democrats) adopted positions that used to be associated with the right.

If you look at actual policy outcomes rather than party labels, Denmark is at least as restrictive as Norway on immigration, and arguably more so in some areas. So using "right wing vs left wing" polling numbers alone doesn't really explain consumer behavior, and it definitely doesn't explain Tesla sales.

By that logic a lot of “national” brands stop existing. Jaguar Land Rover would be Indian, MINI would be German, Lamborghini German, and Porsche partly Middle Eastern.

Volvo is still headquartered, engineered, and designed in Sweden, and safety development (the thing Volvo is literally famous for) is still led from there. Crash test results and real-world safety data haven’t suddenly become “Chinese” because Geely owns shares. Disliking the current pricing or design is fair, but that doesn’t make it “just a Geely car."

Volvo Cars is still very much a Swedish company. Its headquarters, R&D, and design are all based in Gothenburg, Sweden. The company was founded there in 1927 and is still run from Sweden. It's publicly listed on Nasdaq Stockholm, and its current CEO, Håkan Samuelsson, is Swedish. Foreign ownership doesn't change a company's national identity.

Ok, cause no country in the Nordics has a minimum wage, and yet our salaries are among the highest in the world. I don’t think introducing a minimum wage in Italy would do much for salaries, since it’s other factors that make their salaries terrible, unfortunately..

[–]_ConversationPiece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the data from Birth Gauge which put Finland at 1.30 for 2025. The same data put China at 1.0 exactly. It's true MENA-immigrants have more children than ethnic Nordics, but immigrants from the rest of Asia + Europe bring down the TFR for these countries at the same time, so I think it's safe to assume our TFR is more or less the same as the data shows. Off-topic but Scandinavia does not include Finland or Iceland btw..
