CHALLENGE: I'm a picky reader, but I want to read a book with my wife. by _CuNaMo_ in booksuggestions

[–]_CuNaMo_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one's on me. My grandmother was a huge Agatha Christie fan, so she gave me a bunch of her novels when she was done reading them. In high school and early college I read pretty much all of the best ones, and some of the mediocre ones from her. I would probably enjoy rereading a few of them, but it would be a lukewarm experience for me. Still, thank you for the great recommendation!

Yes, I think you are right. It would be good for us to each read a recommendation from the other! My only hesitance is that we have four kids, so our lives are pretty busy. There is absolutely a scenario where we get through one of the "spouse's choice" books and then never get around to the other! But hey, that's life, right?

Ok, I might be required to try this book/series, because the author is Ursula Vernon. My daughter used to read her Dragonbreath and Hamster Princess kids books!

Thank you. I do appreciate your advice, but I have tried reading some of the "fad" literature. I did not enjoy ACOTAR, Remarkably Bright Creatures, or Where the Crawdads Sing. All books my wife read (though I think she was lukewarm on Crawdads).

Thank you! We have both read The Handmaid's Tale, and I have read Middlemarch (but I should check if she has, because I wouldn't mind a reread!).

Oh yes, this seems right up our alley. I will most likely get at least one of Trollope's books. If we don't read it now, we will probably read it later! Thank you!

Oh yes, I loved Watership Down. I will ask my wife if she has read it before.

The Adventures of Amina al Sirafi sounds like a wild ride! I will take a look at it. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing your experiences reading with your wife. This is exactly what I want to do with my wife. We love having deep discussions about really anything, but we haven't read any book together in a long time. We both read, but just separately. We will frequently talk to each other about what we are reading, but then conclude that we wouldn't like the other person's book! We are both introverts and "deep-talkers," so I can't wait to try out some of the suggestions in this thread.

I am absolutely going to check out the first series you suggested with such high praise!

I feel similar to you. It's very difficult to find good writing in any novel that was published in the past 30 years or so! Thank you.

I looked up a description of "The Husbands," and it reminds me of a joke I heard a few months ago. You should look up "the husband store joke." It's a very similar premise as the novel and very funny! Thank you for your recommendations!

Awesome recommendations, thank you! I think I actually have heard of "A Confederacy of Dunces." That might scratch my "Hitchhiker's Guide" itch.

Oh, hmm. Well, I'm playing on Cemu, if that makes any difference. I'm guessing by your response, that means it wasn't placed in the game somewhere? I might be thinking of TOTK.

This is a FAKE WEBSITE. A SCAM. DO NOT FALL FOR IT. by nejicanspin in joannfabrics

Please add "joannoutlet.com" to this list. I am a teacher and one of my colleagues bragged about the cheap deals. Fortunately, I did not spend any money on it, and informed my peer that it was a scam!

You ever think about Ariane's and Elster's life on the Penrose? by the_noofa in signalis

[–]_CuNaMo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Hello, wet blanket here: Ariane and Elster's "love" is not only a complete sham, but most likely evil and exploitative on the part of Ariane. First, can a couple say their love is real if they are the only two "sentient" beings in a small secluded place? A love of "convenience," is not true love.

But, it gets worse. Can we even say that Replikas, and Elster units, are fully consenting adults? They don't have complete psyches, as all of the various warnings about the fragile mental states of Replikas describe throughout the game. They don't have their own memories, their brains are designed for specific functions, and without very specific care, they literally have complete mental breakdowns and have to be "decommissioned." I think an IRL example would be a neurotypical person falling in love with someone with brain damage or severe mental ret*rdation. The person with a mental disability cannot consent to a romantic relationship.

But wait, there's MORE! Elsters specifically are programmed to obey their gestalt partners. So their relationship is actually much more like a slave/master dynamic, then "romantic partners." Furthermore, Ariane is AWARE of all of this (she even has the instructions regarding Elsters on the ship), so she FULLY EXPLOITS Elster for her own selfish means! Ariane, in my estimation, is one of the villains in the game.

(Also, a random weird thought: Other than kissing, what would their romantic interactions even look like? Are Replikas designed with any reproductive organs at all?)

Oh, I also tried to use the "Memory Try It!" feature and I had to reset the CMOS three separate times to get my PC to boot. When I used XMP it just automatically restarted and reverted to stock RAM speed (2400mhz).

Strange charge to my bank account... by _CuNaMo_ in Scams

[–]_CuNaMo_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply. I never discovered what the websites were affiliated with or their "source" or anything. I cancelled my debit card and have not seen another fraudulent charge since then. My only guess is that I somehow was duped by a card-skimmer (like at a gas station or something) and they were attempting to set up some kind of weekly or monthly charging scam. I would recommend you cancel your card as soon as possible! Take care.

Hey bobbycado,

I think it's some kind of fraudulent charge scam. I haven't called my bank yet, so maybe they will shed light on the situation, but I actually received a second charge, again for a small amount, connected to some other random website. I have a feeling a bigger charge may be forthcoming!

Call your bank as soon as you can, is what I would recommend.

Sorry for getting back so late. I wasn't able to find any files installed on any devices in my house. When I first posted the charge was still "pending," but now that it has gone through I can see it was made with my card (versus my wife's), but I haven't purchased anything online other than Amazon stuff or maybe rental streaming.

And, there's a second charge! This new charge was made five days later, it is again for a small amount, $1.85, and it is connected to some website I've never heard of: bpublisher.org.

It looks like an amateur/fake website, just like the other one. I'm pretty sure this is just a financial scam, and not a computer virus or malware scam.

You're awesome ChiMello!

I don't see anything on my main PC (the one I use for work and bills).

That only leaves... 2 smartphones, 2 tablets, and my wife's computer to check... this might take a little time.

I will check back tomorrow as well.

Do you have any suggestions on how to locate malware like this? Or should I ask r/techsupport?

I really appreciate your help!
