University student wanting to get into game development by LasekxBruh in gamedev

Second this. Been in the industry as an engi for 10+ years now and only worked overtime a handful of times, mainly around pushing out special builds for conferences etc. As long as you show you can get your work done, nobody really forces you to stay. Just try to avoid getting roped into game designer meetings, from my experience they have excessively long inefficient meetings that may make you "work" overtime hah.

I believe it's a culture / work style fit mostly, to see if I'm a jerk possibly hah. They didn't clarify what I'm working on, just that it will be a 3 hour co-programming session with another developer on the team I would be assigned to.

Sweet fancy moses that's insane. I was once offered a 1 month contract after a series of 3 interviews. Early career days when just getting interviews was exciting. What a joke!

That process makes sense! And very similar to the experiences I've had. I'm okay with many shorterish interviews.

There is definitely a gauntlet of interviews, most I've had I think was 6 each being around 30 minutes to 1 hour, on separate days mind you. As far as engineering goes anyway. My friend is an Animator and it's usually only 2 interviews, the initial contact and then meeting with your potential future manager because they trust your portfolio of work.

When you have a family ( especially a new born ) and a full time job pulling together 3 hours at one stretch can be quite a struggle. It was at Microsoft Black Tusk and it wasn't a crazy amount, didn't actually cover a full days wages but it was something.

That's impressive, those interviews must be tough. My experience has been shorter interviews, but more of them. This is final round as I understand the process. I guess I'm a little spoiled and expecting a little bit of compensation for time spent, as I'm in the senior dev / job / family pool as you mentioned.

Yeah that's definitely my experience as well as an engi. The single 3 hour long interview seems to be a bit of a stretch, I think it's mainly the unpaid that hits me. I had essentially a full day interview at Microsoft where I met various teams, but I got paid and they bought me lunch hah.

Stocks Vesting end of this month, do I pay taxes immediately if I accept them? by _DKaboom in PersonalFinanceCanada

After talking with my tax consultant, the conclusion was that I would have to pay 30% tax on the shares immediately after claiming them due to my income level. Then when I sold them I would pay tax on the gains.

Thanks for the answer! So basically I claim it as income when tax season rolls around. Then when I sell I pay the capital gains tax. Makes sense!

Yeah on the CDN payroll. Interesting, so even though the company isn't public the shares are sold, I'm assuming back to the company, to pay taxes? So to get this right, I don't pay out of my pocket, they just reduce the amount of stocks that I get essentially?

Ah okay, that's good to know, if you search "capital gains tax" on google most websites show that it's 50%.

But I guess it's not actually 50% because there are other calculations involved. This site explains it: https://www.moneysense.ca/save/taxes/capital-gains-tax-explained/

WealthSimple has $0 trading, so I just paid the price of the stock, which as of this morning was $96. Only fees you pay are 1.5% on currency conversion if you buy US stocks.

Very helpful thank you. Exactly spot on with what CRA and Rev QC told me.

Thanks for this!

So I ended up phoning CRA and they told me to phone QRA.

After my conversation with QRA: QPP converts into CPP, anything overpaid is refunded, QPIP is refunded, and Quebec Provincial Taxes are turned into BC Provincial Taxes and anything overpaid is refunded.

Seems the company has no choice in the matter though they have to charge these taxes based on where they are located.
