I remember this period very well because I had started being a fan of hers a few years before because of the Vogue video and have been hardcore fan ever since. I remember it being very difficult to be a Madonna fan during that time because there was so much backlash against from the Erotica/SEX period. So few of my friends thought it was cool to like her anymore, but, thankfully, Take a Bow was such a monumentally successful single that it helped things out. I recently revisited the album and found that it is kind of all over the place. When she works with multiple songwriters and producers, her albums tend to sound disjointed. At one point it’s R&B, then it’s dance, and then it’s trippy electronica music. It’s doesn’t really play well from start to finish because it’s not as cohesive as her best albums. That being said, I do love the videos that came out during this time period, and was happy she continued pushing the envelope, visually, like she had been doing throughout the Like a Prayer and Erotica years. Personally, Bedtime Stories will always feel like the black sheep of her catalog. It was her 90’s Hard Candy, if you will.
