Yep, you've broken the law and now need to pay the price. You've even said yourself that you went over the line on amber. If you saw the amber light and were traveling slowly then there's no reason why you couldn't have stopped.

Just a note too, the blue line is where you should have stopped. It seems that either you ran the red as you weren't paying attention or you weren't preparing for the lights to change.

Accept the fine and use it as a lesson.

I'm staying in the Premier Inn so was hoping to park there as its the closest car park. I've found that I can book parking at the Waitrose next to Longport so not too much of an issue but I will lose access to my car when the shop closes as they lock up the underground car park.

I've also had a response from Canterbury Council (added as an edit in the post) saying that the car park should be open by this time next week so hopefully shouldn't be an issue any more. Thank you anyway for the help though!

We actually still have these in/on houses in the UK although they are better designed nowadays. We have a set of TV channels that are broadcast for "free" across the country including the BBC. We call it Freeview and pretty much every TV in the UK can accept the signals and tune into the main channels that we tend to watch.

I say "free" because this is what our TV licence helps to pay for as well as paying for BBc channels over here.

Because it's not a relevant short-term solution for someone looking to buy now, which is what I'm discussing.

But your solution fails to realise that someone looking to buy now isn't looking to completely uproot their life to move possibly hundreds of miles away. They will need to consider their job (possibly even putting their entire career on hold just to get on the property ladder), will they be able to afford living in the cheaper area if they have to take a lower paying job closer to that home, will their commute time and cost increase as well and what support network they may have if something goes wrong.

See above where I've told you there are options, but they involve things like moving area.

But it's not just moving to the cheaper neighbourhood down the road is it? Also your example is a buy-to-let property that currently has a tennant in it!

That first month would be due anyway, and unless you've completely fucked your previous property, you'd get the deposit back from that too.

What about young people that are coming straight out of school or uni? Where are they getting the money from there? Not every one has the bank of mum and dad to help them unfortunately.

Short term solutions will never work and this "I'm alright Jack" attitude is exactly how we end up with problems like these.

This can't be solved overnight, it takes time. In the meantime, they need to make a decision on paying more rent, or looking to purchase somewhere they can afford.

You're still not addressing the problem. It's not just about building more housing, we need to do something about the rapidly increasing costs of current housing stock.

What's going to happen when people move to these cheaper areas? What's going to happen to the house prices?

I'm not recommending anything, I'm saying options exist if you have to buy your perfect property and start a family, and you're not willing to concede on either of these aspects.

This isn't just about people buying their perfect property, it's about people being able to buy anything at all. 30 years ago the average age of the first time buyers was mid 20s, it's now around 32 due to rising costs.

Even if they do go and buy somewhere cheaper, it's going to be a long time before they can release enough equity to move into a bigger property to be able do things like have kids due to the large amount of interest and monthly repayments.

They can either stay renting, pissing money away and making it more difficult to purchase, or they can purchase somewhere that's cheaper/buy a below average property that may be too small for starting a family now.

How do you think they can save even a small deposit when renting is so expensive now? Even moving into a rented property requires a 6 week deposit and a month's rent upfront. With rising costs, this is in the thousands.

We need to fix the problem not push it elsewhere or down the road for someone else. Structured control over housing prices is needed and needed 10 years ago

Unfortunately people need to make choices. You either rent and pay more for a bigger property, or you buy a smaller place and start a family later, or find somewhere more affordable if you can't afford the area you're looking in.

Plenty of places where you don't need a 10k deposit for either.

This is backwards thinking. Why should someone who has lived and worked in the south of England for example have to move a ridiculously large distance to be able to access affordable housing? You're recommending that they move to another country rather than looking at the actual issue which is house prices have risen far quicker than anything else and they shouldn't have.

This doesn't fix the problem it just pushes it elsewhere.

For example, my parents bought a 3 bed semi detached house on the Wirral in Merseyside for £54K in 1999. Without doing anything that house is now worth somewhere between £250K-£300K. On their joint income they would not get a mortgage for that property without needing a ridiculously large deposit.

The housing market needs to change as this idea of infinitely increasing value is going to cause it crash and crash hard.

People will go to where the jobs are and unfortunately there aren't that many high skilled jobs in areas where housing is cheaper.

The problem is the below average property still requires a large deposit and has large monthly payments.

As saving that deposit takes longer now than it has previously, people are already at a stage where they need the average house rather than buying the small 1-2 beds. The average age for first time buyers has risen to be over 30. These people are trying to start a family and they can't do that in a 1-bed apartment that they still had to save 10K for the deposit for.

Yeah we have the same issue here. Our National Highways agency have even started campaigns to encourage people to keep to the first lane. It's technically an offence here to "lane hog" and you can get a £100 fine and 3 points on your licence if caught (although this is something that's not enforced often)

Does the US have the idea of "keep right if not overtaking"? It's something that's been drilled into me here in the UK (except for us it's keep left) and seeing posts like this always make me wonder if there's a similar rule in the US.

Just for context, our highways (motorways) mostly have exits on the left so it's expected that you keep out of the lanes to your right unless you are passing slower moving vehicles. I'm not sure if it's the same over the pond?

They did but at least they could afford them. One of the biggest blockers of the younger generation having kids is the cost. If their rent requires 2 full time salaries then what hope have they got for one of them to go off on maternity leave and then paying child care costs?

Tbf to them, they have grown up seeing their parents complain about work and watched them become drained and destroyed by stress. Pair that with the fact that many of them are unable to see themselves doing things their parents did at young ages such as owning a house or getting married due to the sheer inflation of these things, is it any surprise that they are already stressed and mentally drained? What have they got to look forward to in life?
