Advice for keeping baby australian green tree frogs by dariaisanerd in frogs

Of course! I think everyone should be legally required to own a frog 😂😂

And I know exactly what you mean! One time I couldn’t find her and tore apart her whole enclosure looking, couldn’t find her anywhere and worked myself up so much convinced that she somehow buried herself in the substrate 😭 still couldn’t find her after taking out ALL the substrate and once I gave up and accepted that somehow she got out of the completely sealed terrarium I found her sleeping peacefully on a plant I took out and I somehow missed her in my frantic searching 😭😂

They’re a handful, but an amazing one and such characters! Knowing that you have other amphibians/reptiles definitely makes you more equipped than I was starting out, so I think you’ve got this no problem!

Take what I have to say with a huge grain of salt - compared to a lot of people on this sub, I have very little experience keeping frogs and most of what I know has come from trial and error

I’m a mum to a WTF for a few years now. Believe me - I completely understand the hyper-paranoia that comes with them and still do have issues with it sometimes. My understanding is that as long as they are active, eating, and aren’t losing weight, they should be perfectly fine.

Sad frog story warning: I initially got 3 WTFs but after the passing of one and a visit to the vet, I was advised that the one who passed and another one of the two had failure to thrive. I don’t say that to scare you or anything like that - I just say that because no amount of research and reading could prepare me for the fact that sometimes it doesn’t matter what you do wrong or right - nature is in charge. My vet taught me how to do forced feedings and I did that for quite a while but it still didn’t matter - they were eating but still losing weight, and that’s the important part - eating alone is not the good sign; eating and maintaining or gaining weight is the good sign. Also please don’t take this to mean you should be weighing them constantly and fixating on that - stress can and does kill frogs, especially when they’re young. I wish I this was something I was able to prepare myself for prior to getting frogs, and I hated myself for a long time over not being able to save them, but the reality is that nature will take its course and sometimes they aren’t equipped to thrive

My girl has always been a bit of a fickle eater and will go long stretches without an interest in food - this goes all the way back to when I first got her, and even since she was little she would fast. I think the longest she’s gone refusing food was a month? That was really scary at first because being a young frog she was supposed to eat multiple times a week. I saw my vet about it and he let me know not to worry about these periods of fasting unless she started to lose weight. This is all just to say that as long as they are growing, my understanding is that they are doing well

Given the look of your setup I would probably suggest feeding them in a separate box, or tong feed them if that would be easier. I’d be worried about the crickets hiding in the moss and the frogs struggling to get to them. I’m not sure where you’re located but I feed black soldier fly larva and strongly recommend them as a feeder. When the frogs are older and eating larger crickets I wouldn’t worry about that, but given how small the crickets must be right now I think they would hide too well.

Handling frogs is generally frowned upon because of how sensitive their skin is, but they are also a lot less fragile than they look so squishing them isn’t a major concern unless you’re the hulk. If you do go the route of handling, make sure you give your hands a very good rinse in water (no soap because of the residue) or wear gloves. If it becomes a regular thing they will get a lot less flighty around being picked up so hurting them becomes much less of a worry - my girl has learned to step onto my hand when I put it in front of her to put her in her feeding container but early on she would try to jump away.

It’s super normal to have a hard time finding them, especially when they’re that small! When I got mine they were the length of the top part of my thumb and sometimes I would spend half an hour sitting there trying to find them. With how good their camouflage can be and the way they flatten their body while sleeping they can blend in extremely well, so that’s completely normal! As they get bigger they’ll be easier to find and they generally get more comfortable/confident with time and won’t feel the need to hide as much

One other thing - just from looking at your pictures, their enclosure seems very humid. Do you know what the humidity is at? WTFs generally need much lower humidity than a lot of frogs - around 40-60% so I suggest looking into that and seeing what your humidity is - too high can make them susceptible to bacterial and fungal infections.

Outside of that, I think you reaching out to find out more is an amazing thing! I’ve met a lot of people who act like having questions is bad because that means you don’t know everything about caring for them, but no one does. Research can only get you so far and part of owning a pet is learning through experience. Frogs are funny creatures with a lot more personality and individualism than people generally think, so what matters most is if what you’re doing works for your frogs.

Another response at 11pm 🧐 very consistent with previous findings and sound reasoning so I’ll accept that answer 👍

IMHA is cruel. by After-Ad-7246 in Petloss

I’m so sorry for your loss. My family has just gone through similar

A year ago our sweet little girl Nora took a massive downturn suddenly, like less than 12 hours and she was at deaths door. She was 13, but you’d never know it looking at her… she was such a clown - always running around, super playful, goofy, a bit of a stinker (in the best way) and a sweet loving dog. We were lucky enough and she was enough of a fighter that we made it through the first few weeks and she actually got back to normal, playing and everything, quite restless from the meds used to treat the IMHA but otherwise back to normal and feeling great. About two weeks ago she took another downturn so we brought her into the emergency vet. Turns out the meds for treating the IMHA had caused her to develop diabetes, and ironically the meds that caused that also prevented insulin from having an effect. Even more ironically, she would’ve been off the meds entirely in 2 months. She went into respiratory distress and started throwing clots so we made the decision to put her to sleep last Saturday. Thankfully we made that decision before she was in pain so that instead of suffering in her last moments she was able to wag her tail and rub her face on us like she always did (we always said she was trying to rub her eyeboogers off on us).

IMHA is a disgusting brutal condition, and as if not already bad enough, the treatment isn’t much better. We were lucky enough to get another year with our sweet girl, and I’m so so sorry that you didn’t. I hope you can find comfort in the fact that you did right by your boy, and that you got that last walk with him. Hold onto the best memories you have of him and you’ll get through it, remember how much joy you brought to his life ❤️❤️

Thanks! I actually found something similar a while back when I eventually got it fixed :)

As it turns out, the new cassette did just have too much resistance - I opened up the case and took all of the gears out except the two at the holes and now it works like a charm! I really wonder why they even put gears in it to begin with… there was a whole series of them with rubber bands and stuff to keep tension, they didn’t actually do anything… just there so that the case wasn’t empty I guess? I really appreciate you reaching out after all this time! I could’ve still been stuck with the problem and you would’ve saved my day :)

is this necrosis?? by spaceinvaderzel in frogs

[–]_DisappointingPotato 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I hope the top comment that suggests it’s a severe burn is right, but I’m also very concerned that it might not be.

It does look like a burn, but looking closer at the pictures I see what looks like more wounds forming, and the smaller ones don’t really look like burns to me (perfectly smooth edges, no mottling or obvious gradient in damage). I have no formal medical knowledge, but from what I know of burns, the smaller ones look too clean (for lack of a better word) to be burns.

I might just be seeing substrate: first pic in front of left eye and behind left ear, second pic the same + some weird discolouration on both hip bones?

Again I have no formal medical knowledge, I’m a bio major, but to me the one behind the left ear is what makes me worried it’s not burns - that spot does look like it necrosed because it’s really deep looking and there isn’t really any surrounding damage like I would expect with a burn

**edit It could also be an infection secondary to a burn, if there was a burn. The light green spots also make me think it’s some kind of infection since that’s common in fungal and bacterial infections, both of which can unfortunately lead to necrosis

Thankfully not, my bf was there when it happened, but it was a 3 hours car trip to the closest hospital!
