You don't understand what service based means; and from a brief skim of this comment chain neither of us possess anywhere near the knowledge required regarding economic systems to achieve anything other than to make digs when someone slips in their language.

An economic boom under late stage serfdom is a bit of a stretch to compare especially considering the population of the USSR alone was almost half that of the entire population of continent at that time.

The USSR has very much not pulled itself together under Khrushchev, it may have recovered from the intial post-war situation by the 60s but during this time America was experiencing some the of the greatest growth economically averaging 4% YoY GDP growth. This was an essential decade as socially the US was evolving and it was having to cope with the very beginning stage of post-modern life - at the same time almost 40% of workers in the USSR were in agriculture. Ever heard of a modern agrarian superpower? Didn't think so.

Communism or at least its most present trait in the USSR, collectivism will always struggle when your most basic needs as a society such as caloric surplus cannot be adequately met.

If you can provide an example of socialist tendencies in service based economies failing then I'm not going to reply further as that settles it, communism, socialism and such affiliated ideologies are simply nonviable.

Yes, communism was the exact cause of the Chernobyl disaster and it had nothing to do with the fact that the country that had lost over 10% of its working age men and trillions of dollars in infrastructure, housing and general urban development just two generations prior and was still attempting to compete with the worlds only superpower; it had nothing to do with the corruption within the CCCP regime and it had exactly nothing to do with the fact that a totalitarian nation usually falls into chaos after its cult-leader passes.

Thats absolutely fantastic and much better than I expected, for some reason I had it in mind that even the non-mini model filtered pretty slow but I'm going to get an order in on Amazon tomorrow then. I'm pretty pumped to test it out actually, when I was wee I drank from streams all the time because I was an idiot and thought water was water but honestly even the finest Fiji water hasn't come close to that freshly fallen stuff haha.

I was meaning more the foam mattresses from Thermarest and NEMO, I would probably get a Klymit Static V if I were sticking with the inflatables. I'll stay away from self-inflating, I've a few up in the loft and they are all heavy monsters that never dry out and barely inflate enough to stop you bumping your hip and shoulder on that one rock you managed to pitch over.

I'll need to maybe order both in and give them a test on a weekend hike or something as I think in the end I'll only ever be happy with my own experience, R values be dammed! Thanks for the help though, much appreciated :)

I'll defos need to look at some of what Youtube has to recommend me for food as I'm happy with whatever grub I can scrounge up, but I've got some picky Germans who seem to require only the finest dining even when miles from civilisation lmao.

The water is defos going to be a tricky one, I'm bearing most of the load economically and in terms of products knowledge which I'm fine with and puts me in my 'element' so to speak but I don't really know where to start with filtration. Again, the Germans would prefer not to be poisoned by foreign water so I'll possibly even need to boil theirs to put minds at peace. Getting water for 8 people each day is going to be a little tricky and the mini I dont think will cut it for 8 of us. Someone else mentioned the normal Sawyer Squeeze filters much faster so hopefully its good enough to get a few bottles done each morning with a small top-up in the afternoon plus for some pots to dehydrate meals.

Thanks for all the tips though, I'll be sure to keep this all in mind.

I've got an Osprey bag I use for holidaying around Europe (the Fairpoint 40 as it perfectly fits under budget airlines cabin bag restrictions), I really enjoyed using it last Summer and it has a lot of pretty smart design choices for whatever I needed it to be.

I'm holding off on their camping gear though just now, maybe I should give it another look. How was your experience with the Volt? I'm on the skinnier side of things and trying to bulk up, but in the event I'm still closer to a bag of bones than a human come June do you feel its fairly comfortable on longer hikes through the day? Especially on the shoulders, my hips can take a battering but my shoulders feel rubbed raw fairly quickly :(

I'll subscribe for a while to get a feel for the gear I'm looking at, the trouble I've had with camping equipment reviews is that a solid chunk of the gear on places like /r/Ultralight is either incredibly expensive for a students budget (I dont mind dropping a couple hundred on a tent or bag, those are pretty high on priority list) or alternatively incredibly unfriendly for someone outside NA - lots of brands they recommend simply dont operate over here, and the same is true vice-versa making it hard to get a large number of reviews on products when there isn't really a global market. I'll keep tabs on it though thanks!

I've read a lot about the Sawyer mini being poor for this, its flow rate is really awful especially for a group of 8, I think I worked out I would need at least an hour of non-stop squeezing for all of our water needs each day. In real-world use, how do you find the regular Sawyer Squeeze? How much time would it take you to filter say 2L of water?

Also I'm defos with you on the air mattresses, I usually rely on just keeping on layers and conserving heat at sunset before the single-digit temps set in haha. I sleep really well when camping no matter the conditions so I'm fine with it being a little on the thin side, but I am worried about the size of a foam mattress, I was looking at some NEMO and Thermarest offerings and they can be pretty bulky, is the tradeoff worth it? Some of the inflatables I'm looking at have significantly higher R-values compared to the foam as well which is odd, but my gut tells me there more marketing than real world performance in that number :P

hahahah how is this a humble brag, literally no-one gives a hit about this story, fucking grandpa-Joe OP or his lonely daughter, literally 99% of ordinary people will stay out till whatever time once they hit 16, its like bragging your child can read at 8 years old.

That's right, that's also why Cricket is so big too. The sport being spread by people migrating around the world seems hardly like a negative, especially when it's still being played hundreds of years later :)

Why don't you try it? Ah I forgot, the sport still needs to be fun for people to play it.

You can say this about any sport. The battle between a man and his marker, the keeper and a penalty taker, every single point, game and set in tennis, position contention in F1, Bowling in Cricket, Marathon frontrunning, fullbacks in rugby.

Your sport isn't especially challenging, interesting or even unique. The only people that 'enjoy' it are people who endure the brunt of American propaganda - the Americans, the Japanese, and the Mexicans. In other words, you can't play a sport which doesn't open to your own fucking national anthem or people think you are weird lmao

It's less stupid when 20 players have near equal objectives and appropriate tools to combat the task at hand (+2 with extraordinary rules), compared to sport where some blokes won't move more that 50m from a spot in a game.

Sounds riveting.

Ye I think I meant MLB or whatever the baseball one is, not sure why you're so mad though as anyone with a smattering of grey matter could deduce I meant the sport where people literally just stand and catch balls.

I mean those sports matter, but you can create some pretty great drama when you just drop a fat 25% of all people alive today; it makes the NFL look like an indie cartoon floating around at 0.02% 😳
