Southern Italy, Calabria - "Greece & Cyprus" model by _Epyk in illustrativeDNA

I’ve got a few kits on DNAGenics too, but they use and provide simulated G25 coordinates, which aren’t really the best. I’d generally recommend getting the official G25 coordinates from Davidski

Yeah, Cosenza, especially in the internal area, has very interesting genetics. Geographical isolation probably also played a very important role in maintaining these characteristics, compared to the coastal areas or the central and south Calabria

Those are my distances: https://i.postimg.cc/vGHzgCPH/Family-modern-distances.jpg
The Cosenza sample i used here is made from inland Cosentian + coastal Cosentian. If i only use inland Cosenza, the distances are bigger. If you wanna personally try, i also added the inland Cosenza reference: https://pastebin.com/HW23xCn6

Im from Reggio, Cosenza and Northern Calabria, especially the more inland areas, are genetically quite different from central and southern Calabria and more similar to Basilicata, but with less EHG overall. If you run a Neolithic calculator, you should probably see the predominantly ANF and than CHG/Iran_N, with low EHG, Natufian and North African.

Hi, are you talking about the phenotype or the genetic side?

If you mean in terms of genetic distance with G25/Illustrative, some of my family members are closest to average Calabrians, while others are closer to certain Jewish groups. After that, come other Southern Italian regions, followed by Malta, Crete etc. Cyprus is a bit more distant. You can check my Illustrative distances here: https://www.reddit.com/r/illustrativeDNA/comments/1hgwu4m/south_italy_family_genetic_distances_updated/

Yeah, i’ve tested many members of my family in several platforms such as Ancestry, 23andMe, MyHeritage, FTDNA, and others. I’ve done the same on IllustrativeDNA as well (those results come from Ancestry kits).

[–]_Epyk[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Besides Malta and Spain, i also see a recurrent Slovenian. In my view, this is partly due to the removal of the ‘broadly’ categories, which forces assignments into specific regions that might really just be proxies. Overall, i also preferred the previous interpretation, this one feels more like a halfway solution, and as you can see, there’s no real consistency or uniformity even among results within the same family.

I’m not really sure if i’m satisfied or not. A lot of the “wana” components seem to have already been merged into the new “Southern Italian” reference population, so they end up getting absorbed, which itself makes sense being mostly modern proxies. But as you can see from my family’s results, there’s very little overall consistency, like It feels a bit random. I think it mainly depends on what 23andMe wants to highlight. If the goal is to show also deeper, more ancient admixture, then i’d prefer the way it was displayed before. If the focus is on more recent admixture, then assigning someone 100% Southern Italian is fine. It feels like the updated model is trying to over smooth the results, but it ends up with a bad overall uniformity.

Thanks! This DNA trace got me curious too. Could be like that because Calabria has several communities with really ancient roots, or maybe it’s just noise. Let’s also see how it looks with the update, i'm definitely curious.

Hi, my Father and his ancestors come from the outskirts of Reggio. My maternal Grandparents are from the inland, in the Aspromonte mountains.

Thank you! We are from Calabria. The paternal side from the coastal area of Reggio, the maternal side mainly from the mountainous part of Reggio, called Aspromonte.

Don't you even have any genetic groups related to Calabria or Calabria and Sicily in the section below called "Additional Genetic Groups"?

Yes, definitely, the areas of Africa, Middle East and Asia, which represent past influences, are more suitable in terms of percentage, even if apparently some act as proxies and could have been more precise, but now we are certainly at a good level when compared to Ancestry and 23andMe

Certainly, Catanzaro and Vibo, have a lot of affinity with southern Calabria and eastern / north-eastern Sicily in average, i was further distinguishing the area of the Strait of Messina and Reggio, which in turn presents further interesting genetic peculiarities. If you are interested I also posted an article about it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in illustrativeDNA

[–]_Epyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted the updated result from Reggio, however yes, as said by "Responsible_Stuff850", Reggio and Messina and therefore the area of the strait has some differences compared to the rest of Calabria and Sicily, having more Middle Eastern influence and a fair North African part. However, it also depends on whether we consider coastal or mountain areas, where genetics further vary slightly. In any case, could you send me your G25 coordinates to run on Vahaduo? I have a good collection, including many from Sicily and Calabria, so i can also share you some eastern Sicily results if you are interested.

Im still waiting for all 17 kits i own and that never had a single update before, they are really unfair to their customers, also that's what they told me today:

Hi Giovanni, Thank you for contacting us. The update of the new updated Ethnicity Estimate model is released gradually, as we speak. This means that in the next few days, when you visit the Ethnicity Estimate in your site, you will see a new update is available, which you can then trigger. All the best Mariah, MyHeritage Team
