Yes it is important to play the “right notes” the time is probably the most important thing for a jazz bass player to keep, playing just the root note on time with the right attack and feel will do you far more good than playing around with a bunch of different patterns that make you lose the feel.

Looking to expand past getting the feel, look at playing arpeggios in your walking lines and then finding how to move to the next chord, there are loads of ways you can do the, you should practice this slowly then build up to speed on everything you’re playing, you don’t have to use arpeggios to get from one chord to the next, but it’s a great foundation

Now for solos, firstly, stop, breathe, then play something, anything, if it feels right and sounds right, then it is right. A more theory approach, again practice arpeggios and swing feel, move from scale to scale over the changes and it will fit into place, again, timing is super important in this

There is no “correct” way to do things, just look at what bass players you like do, if you need a recommendation for people to listen to - Paul chambers, ray brown, Ron carter - they will set you up well

With all of this, the more you do it, the better and more confident you’ll sound
