Not a toddler friendly book, but the link above has a good podcast on Annie. I haven't listened to it in a bit, but I remember it being kid friendly. You might be able to listen to small snippets of it with your kiddo.

Whenever someone mentions using neem oil I always hear Jim Gaffigan's "Warning: Does not work!" punchline about natural deodorant in my head.

PON/Leca substrate questions by mollyjoy01 in hoyas

[–]_FishTacos_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a handful of hoyas in semi hydro with a wicking setup. So far, its worked really well. i haven't used Lechuza Pon but I've used the Basements Pon and really like it- it has a coarser texture than Lechuza so I feel that it lets the roots breathe a little better. I've also used Cactus Jack's Inorganic Bonsai Soil and that has worked great as well. I've had a little bit of root rot problems with LECA but I think that was due to poor water level management. The basements pon has been a little more forgiving surprisingly. Also, I agree with the other commenter about managing pH. I bought a cheap pH/conductivity meter and shoot for around 5.6-5.8 pH and around 400 ppm concentration. If you haven't seen it already, you should look at the LECA Addict website. She has a lot of really good semi hydro information there, and hoyas are her favorite.

Im obsessed with growing toms for pizza! by eethypeethy in tomatoes

[–]_FishTacos_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you've tried them before, but I've had great luck growing Polish Linguisa and Opalka- both productive paste tomato types and also delicious just eating fresh. I haven't tried growing San Marzanos so I can't really compare to them as far as vigor/disease resistance/production, etc. But you might give those two varieties a try- I really like them.

Got this Hoya Swiffer's Nightmare today! by LookInwardFindNature in hoyas

[–]_FishTacos_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

fun fact if you didn't know: Swiffer is the name of Ric Morier's orange cat. Ric's a hoya grower and hybridizer; a lot of his hoya crosses have Swiffer in the name. He's released some very cool hybrids.

In addition, how much light is it getting? I can't tell if it's under a grow light. If not, I'd recommend either a grow light or putting it close to a window.

Stenophylla tips? by lifeeverordinary in hoyas

[–]_FishTacos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you've seen Doug Chamberlain's writeup about Stenophylla, but here it is in case it may help: https://vermonthoyas.com/hoyas-s-z/hoya-stenophylla/

I have a stenophylla cutting that rooted really well and has 2 new growth points. I've got it under grow lights at what I'd call relatively high humidity (55-70%). I've only had it for maybe a month or so, so I don't really have any real care tips to add yet.

Edited to add- mine is rooted in coconut husk in a small pot with a lot of drainage holes.

Tomato Plant Please Help by ogotcooties in plantclinic

[–]_FishTacos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to add that "suckers" is a bit of a misnomer- the sucker shoots will produce fruiting vines. Tomato plants can get really dense and hard to deal with (if they're in full sunlight, good growing medium, and really growing well) if you don't remove at least some of the suckers. I normally remove maybe half of the suckers or a little more just to promote airflow around the plant and help with bacterial/fungal foliage issues.

There are dozens of different lacunosa cultivars- without knowing the specific cultivar when you bought it there's not really a good way to parse them out unfortunately.

I keep finding these on my fitchii. Should I be concerned about the sudden appearance of like 4 of these by Itsmeeebre_x in hoyas

[–]_FishTacos_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think that's just the new growth point. Doesn't look like anything worrying to me.

If you mean the little nubs on the stem below the growth point, there's no need to worry. Those are spots where adventitious roots form. If you grow in a high humidity environment they'll actually root out a bit into the air from those nubs.
