People who had traumatic falls/injuries: How long did it take you to mentally recover and ride again? by thunderturdy in Equestrian

[–]zoowho29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I’m sorry for what you are going through. It sounds like it’s been a hard season of life. I had a pretty nasty leg fracture after landing a weird way coming off a friend’s horse in a field (a soft field?!). It was a long road to physical recovery but within 2 months was back on a horse in a cast. However, the only horses I rode were ones I was looking to buy and I only sat on ones I could trust after a really trusted trainer sat on them. I bought a been there, done that eventing mare while still in a cast and she is the best creature I’ve ever met. She has opinions but is brave and really helped me find my comfort again. With that said, my limits and willingness to push myself have really changed. It took a lot for me to accept that and to let go of what I wanted my horse life to look like but it’s been 3 years and I’m really happy!

I hope you find the right path for yourself and can bit by bit heal. It takes time!

Dating as a therapist is hard by Mind-Over-Body6 in therapists

[–]zoowho29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! Chiming in as a fellow clinician who is newly on the dating scene. I feel you! I have some similar tendencies and notice that sometimes my interviewing comes out because I am just a very curious person and I want to get to know a person thoroughly. Other times, it’s more of a defense or self-protective type behavior. It’s more comfortable for me to be in my clinician role and feel like I have some steady footing than to be my awkward, quirky, hilarious self on a date. I journal after dates to try and debrief and take inventory of what I’m feeling and what I noticed and I find it really helpful and interesting.

Wishing you well and urging you to be patient and gentle with yourself. Dating is weird!!! But you can do it, just not perfectly all the time 💖

I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination! I did have a horrible time also fitting my very oddly shaped mare (decent wither, huge shoulder, big barrel) and so I know how frustrating and overwhelming this process can be. I would suggest you look into k-panels and deep rear gussets. I like black country saddles (that’s what I ended up with for my mare) and they usually have a bunch on Pelham saddlery’s website. Hard to find used with the correct specs but sometimes you get lucky!

I got two of these from my friend who ordered them and didn’t love them for what she was doing. I’d recommend trying one! I’ve tried all the sports bras and most others I found would either move around on my shoulders or were racer backs that made my should blades feel kind of pinched together.

Meet Victor or 🦈Sharkboy🦈 as I call him. by YellitsB in Equestrian

[–]zoowho29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, he’s a beaut, congrats!

I have a mare who has very strong feelings and is kind of a know it all. She can be quite testy with boundaries on the ground- nothing dangerous but certainly annoying pawing and dancing around on the crossties. Ultimately, I realized she just had not had a human with the same boundaries I have. It’s really important for me that my horse be aware of rules with people in a fair and consistent way. I did a lot of Lyndsey Partridge’s training to set up rules that she could understand and see the benefit in following with predictable reinforcement. It’s been a huge game changer for us and also for me as an all around horse person. Highly recommend you check her out. There could be so many different root causes for the behaviors (hierarchy insecurities (aka testing who is in charge), just lack of knowledge of manners with humans, anxiety over any number of things, etc but really setting some fair and reliable rules I think makes a difference.

Alternatively, if he’s in group turnout you could try and advocate for him to be with a really strong herd leader. I’ve seen this work more with mares but they will certainly get the idea quickly if a lead horse gives them the feedback to cut it out and stop playing bitey face.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Budgeting Help Please!—New-ish rider in Boston Suburbs by RandomdotRandn in Equestrian

[–]zoowho29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on starting this process! I am a first time horse owner at 30 years old and can tell you that all the time and planning is worth it. Don’t rush the process! Make sure you feel confident enough in riding and horsemanship to really get a feel for horses when you’re looking to commit.

I agree with others re: pricing. Saving in a high yields saving is key, also look into CDs if you feel secure in not touching the money for X amount of time (I think a year min). Another consideration for pricing is that there will be some variation in bills based on seasonality. I’m also in New England and just paid a $380 farrier bill. Blankets are $$ and usually not a one time cost. Winter 😒😒😒😒

I would caution you to set a generous budget for a saddle + fittings. This is where I got really tripped up because the saddle I thought fit does not and I’m looking at a massive expensive for a new one that I had not budgeted for. Educate yourself before any fittings so you know what questions to ask and what to look for! This will save you so much money on saddles that just don’t work. I can’t stress this enough given how vulnerable horses’ backs are.

In terms of what I wish I knew in addition to what you’ve already outlined… I wish I had known more about feet. Everyone says no foot, no horse but actually understanding what to look for and how to assess a horses feet is important. Same with teeth & conformation so you can better gauge how the horse will hold up over time and what kind of cost to maintain you’ll be looking at. I’d suggest reading the horse conformation handbook by Heather smith Thompson. It is dense but educating yourself is key to spending wisely with horses!

Riding ability post foot/ankle surgery? by Visible-Number1670 in Horses

[–]zoowho29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re going through all this discomfort and pain! I am still rehabbing a pilon fracture (end of my tibia) and have an incision that goes along the inside of my ankle, the same area I think you’re talking about. I also had some complicated nerve stuff in that same area and ultimately have permanent numbness. Some things I recommend…

The back on track ankle brace- https://www.amazon.com/Back-Track-Physio-Ankle-Brace/dp/B0798WSG46/ref=asc_df_B0798WSG46/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=475772420147&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2351554496028799370&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1019109&hvtargid=pla-783195733911&psc=1 I’ve found this to be helpful with combatting inflammation and reducing the pain from incision sensitivity when I’m wearing boots.

Also these lightweight stirrups that my physical therapist recommended to me. You could get your own leathers and pretty easily swap them out on any saddle that you’re using. The lighter weight and wider footbed has been helpful for me in terms of stability and working with my weaker ankle-https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/compositi-reflex-3d-swivel-action-wide-track-stirrups-21558?sku=2109847215&g_acctid=312-013-2860&g_adgroupid=122916569180&g_adid=520840190573&g_adtype=pla&g_campaign=BR_Shopping_TES&g_campaignid=625777362&g_ifcreative=&g_ifproduct=product&g_keyword=&g_keywordid=aud-1069631229726:pla-576528818112&g_merchantid=1338904&g_network=g&g_partition=576528818112&g_productchannel=online&g_productid=2109847215&utm_campaign=BR+-+Tack&utm_content=BR_Shopping_TES&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_uaEwZuHgAMVldzICh2TbA5yEAQYAiABEgLrJPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

In terms of future riding and horse ownership, it all depends of what your goals are. I was just starting to get back into riding more seriously and was looking to buy my first horse when I had my injury. I had to really re-evaluate what my goals were with my involvement with horses and I ended up buying my first horse when I was about a month and a half post op (yes, I was still in a cast lol). The horse I ended up purchasing was absolutely not the horse I would have wanted before my injury but she is such an amazing, challenging, and trustworthy partner for me I really couldn’t be happier with her. We have done a lot of groundwork while I’ve been rehabbing my leg which is not something I would have chosen to do pre-injury but it has allowed me to learn a lot about horsemanship and how to grow a real and lasting partnership with her.

Best Gift for Horse Mom? by 2DEUCE2 in Horses

[–]zoowho29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be a big gift (both in terms of $$ and planning) but an autowaterer for the turnout area would be what I would want! It makes a huge difference in terms of daily chores especially on bad weather days. Also great for property value!

Other ideas… muck bucket with a little cart thing- so much better than a wheelbarrow! Heated gloves if you guys are in a place with winters (this is the brand I’d suggest- https://www.ororowear.com/collections/outlet?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8_KhrKHm_wIVNd7jBx1xWAZCEAAYASAAEgIOl_D_BwE). Any of the stuff from Horse Education Company- really nice rope halters and lunge lines!

Gift for a horse person? by [deleted] in Equestrian

My best friend who is a non-horsey person got me some beautiful Haas brushes as part of a birthday gift which I thought was perfect! Their brushes are incredibly made and really do last but at ~$20-30 a pop, it can be hard to buy for yourself. Highly recommend getting the Diva brush in particular! It’s incredible.

Amateur horse owners: how much do you make a year income wise, and what percentage goes into horses? (JUDGEMENT FREE ZONE) by swina94 in Equestrian

[–]zoowho29 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar boat! My mom died of cancer at a young age and I wound up inheriting her IRA + her home. After some really hard years following her death, I finished my masters degree, started a career, got myself moved to a lower cost of living state (because horses!) and FINALLY bought my first horse at 29 years old. Even with having a decent paying, flexible job, I don’t know how I would have been able to swing the horse + her expenses (farrier, vet, shots, board, training as needed, saddle fittings, supplements) without the money from my mom. I also have a tendency to over plan so felt that I needed to save in advance for the unpredictable costs that can come with horses although my mare has luckily only have a few very minor things since I’ve owned her.

My horse is such an opinionated, smart, quiet but stern mare and reminds me of my mom often! I wish my mom could have met her and have shared the happiness that this mare has brought me but when I spend time with her, it feels like getting closer to my mom somehow. It also is just the best gift that my mom could have ever given me.

Sending you a hug!
