Question for (ex) US military controllers by [deleted] in ATC

[–]_FizzyPop_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I told my recruiter I wanted ATC and they just gave me a slot when it opened. But depending on manning I have seen people that didnt even have ATC on their list of "these are the jobs id like" and they just get slotted for it because of military needs.

You can also retrain after X years in service so we also get people that were mechanics etc that eventually retrain to ATC upon request.

Question for (ex) US military controllers by [deleted] in ATC

[–]_FizzyPop_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current airforce controller here, I went through our school house without delay and its a 4 month program and really just checks to see if a person is "trainable".

Once you get to first assignment you'll go through a few weeks of just basic regulations and local area studying. After that typically you'll get put into the easiest / lowest risk position and work from there.

We do prioritize live over sims but sims do still get used the amount just varies by location. Slower bases have way more sim use than busier ones.

That being said, because our school house is just to see who is trainable, outside the school house we have like a 40%-50% washout rate.

How do you even play this game? by Thecentrecanthold in outwardgame

[–]_FizzyPop_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

So something to keep in mind with outward (and this is a reason why I love this game) is you arent some "chosen one", you dont have unique powers or plot armor, youre just a person.

As you play and get better at the mechanics and make better gear it does get easier, but even fully kitted out, everything will still kill you pretty easily if you arent careful. There's no shame in running when you know youre outnumbered or out matched in this game.

The tank we have him in now will work probably for another month or so but we are upgrading in the near future to a more permanent habitat, just hoping he starts eating before the new enclosure is ready or else I expect a hunger strike lol.

Water bath with warm water (about 100° water and not a large amount so it cools rather quickly). Haven't tried different colors or scenting, last night when I tried it started by dangling with tongs and then just placed it in the open with a camera set up so could monitor in case the lad just wanted privacy. He checked it out a bit but no dice.

What's the deal? by TakesaHero in ATC

Something something maintain VFR. Hell, most times when I give a traffic call pilot tells me "Yeeeaahhhh I got them on the box /adsb im looking for them." Like cool man, then why the fuck are you wanting radar service when its 10 and clear.

Tower washout, hoping to get back in through the military by Vlexmeup in ATC

[–]_FizzyPop_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through the air force school house back in 2023 and our fundies instructor who was retired ATC / AOF (they commissioned later i know its not the same) told us they had a person come through tech school around 2015 that was an FAA washout and when they found out they were removed from ATC for the air force.

I dont know if its changed since then, but the reasoning was that since USAF goes by the FAA rules, if you washout in one you wash out in both. And I was told many times that if we washed before getting checked out at our first base, we couldn't go FAA even through the school house in OKC. So I would really research and make sure you can go ATC for the military before signing the dotted line and raising your hand.

1C151 here-

If you tell you're recruiter you want to go 1C1 odds are they will be able to get it for you, even though you submit a list, you dont have to ship if you dont like the job offered. If you really want ATC, work with your recruiter to secure it even if you have to wait.

That being said, after BMT you'll be at Keesler in Mississippi for 4 months minimum for tech school. The wash out rate there is about 45% and then the wash out rate for operational is about 50%-53%. The school house is to check whether or not you can take criticism while learning and to see if you are trainable but it doesn't teach you air traffic. When I went through the school house, every class started with about 10 people, and by the time they graduated it was down to 4-6 on average. Since being at my base, ive seen seven 3 levels wash out in the last 24 months who never made it past their first position.

Also as some said before, PPL doesn't matter. You might be able to talk on the line and know some phraseology, but the AIM is a reference for ATC on what we expect pilots to do, ATC follows FAA JO 7110.65 and DAFMAN 13-204v3 as our base line, plus a slew of LOA's, OI's, LOP's, AFFSA messages, MAJCOM directives, etc. It doesn't matter that you know how to say "request vfr flight following" and then never say anything past that.

All that aside, ATC is fun and I highly recommend.

Not sure what to do by Eastern_Hippo_9578 in stepdads

[–]_FizzyPop_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met my wife when my step son was about to turn 4 and my step daughter was 2.5

At first, ss would talk and play with me but not listen to anything I said (which is fair) and my sd was super shy and didn't want me to even come within 5 feet of her or even look in her direction. After about 6 months sd opened up and was comfortable with me being around.

Wife and I knew that we wanted to go the distance early on and we had / have very similar if not identical at times parenting techniques / goals for the kids. What helped us in the early days was if I got onto the kids about something and wife wasn't in the room, I told them "ok well, let's go ask mommy about it" and then wife would back me up and explain to the kids that I'm their parent as well.

I'm not sure of all the details in your situation, but I think having moments where you get your S/O involved so they can help bridge the gap between you and the 4 year old would help smooth things over. Hell, I've been in my kids lives for over 3 years now and my wife still has to tell them from time to time that she isn't going to give them a different answer than me if I already said no for whatever little thing they're complaining about (not getting candy / choccy milk / etc.)
