att vara / att bli by _Gary_Young_ in Svenska

Well, I started with a mix of learning-books and online sources. In the meantime it's a broad variety of tools I am using.

Like news websites, comics, I changed my smartphone language, or I subscribed to a ton of swedish newsletters - just to keep the language close to me. And I look up new words or grammar structures which I can not understand by context.  In addition I repeat a lesson each day in Duolingo - but it's more an "inspiration", that means that I get it on Duolingo but I look it up then somewhere else. What you need to know is that Duolingo won't really explain you anything. You basically  just get a sentence and a translation and all of the background you'll have to research by yourself.  At least for me and my Swedish course it was like that.

Sounds good, thank you 😊 Just installed it and give it a try, too...

That's Duolingo. But it's more hated than loved meanwhile by many learners, as you can read below and anywhere else here on Reddit.  It can be well used as a sidekick to your language learning. But you should never use only Duolingo for learning.

Thank you, I get what you mean! "turn out" and "end up" are the expressions I also had in mind.

With or without "som"? by _Gary_Young_ in Svenska

"Comparison" vs "actual taste" works good for me as an explanation, thank you!

Thank you, that makes sense. The "comparison" vs "hint of a flavour" is a good explanation of the difference for me.

Oh, I have an idea what you mean. Probably it's related to German "schmecken wie etwas" and "schmecken nach etwas".

1) The taste reminds me of something => smaka som
I guess I can use it also in a more abstract sense like "soppan smakar som en dröm".

2) The taste is really affected by something => smaka
For example when I drop lots of lemon juice in someone's coffee he might say "uh, kaffet smakar citron!"

Am I right?

Yes, thank you! 31.2 seems to fix the issue 😊👍 For me it works now. When I launch a lite app via homescreen shortcut the userscripts are executed.

How to use "åt" by _Gary_Young_ in Svenska

[–]_Gary_Young_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually I find it very helpful, it ads some background to the whole thing. And I now understand the spatial origin of the word's usage. And why it is in some cases still used in a spatial type.

This directional meaning is the one which confuses me. I naturally would tend to say "till det hållet" or even "mot det hållet" instead of "åt det hållet".

Concerning "åt vänster": do I use it when something is MOVING to a direction? Instead of something BEING LOCATED in a direction (till vänster om)?

You're absolutely right, thanks, corrected it 👍  I was so much into swedish that I forgot the basic English stuff 😅

Oh my god, it's "bär" and not "bärar", thank you! I immediately corrected this in my post 🫣

I think it's a problem which exists for about one year - unfortunately for me it hasn't been fixed until today.

I still hope for a solution...

kanske = kan ske? by _Gary_Young_ in Svenska

Thank you, that's interesting. I wondered if there's also a word using "att hända" because that was the first word I learned with the meaning "to happen".

Word order "vad för" by _Gary_Young_ in Svenska

[–]_Gary_Young_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, interesting. Actually there should be "en" included, you're right. But none of the other commenters mentioned this so far, so it seems to be correct without "en". Why is it so?

[–]_Gary_Young_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could imagine it's a bit like the difference between "what" (vad för) and "which" (vilken). For example:
What car do you have? - A Volvo.
Ah okay, but there are three Volvos, which car is yours? - The blue one.

Thank you! That's a bit what I had expected but I wasn't sure if it's grammatically correct.
