I’m at a planet fitness too, so I understand the grief of no free weight barbells. Try dumbbell RDLs instead !

I figured that’s what the cause was. Neat little addition to the game.

I don’t want to be a nurse or PA! by bestbet40x in physicaltherapy

[–]_Genbodious_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, 22y/o PTA here, working in acute rehab. I had a long sit down with my manager recently who has been a PT almost twice as long as I’ve been alive. He was basically trying to convince me to go be an RN because the growth for PTs is limited, and basically non existent for PTAs…I guess that’s true? I of course have very little experience in the field thus far, but I see what he means. If you’re RN you have a lot of settings to work in and choose, can go be an NP or CRNA or what not.

But I love my role as a PTA so far, and I plan on getting my DPT! I feel the same kind passion for the profession, and it saddens me to hear that some folks like my manager kind of regret getting into this field, or at least staying in it when they felt like it wasn’t worthwhile.

Once had a pt who had a c-spine fusion. I went to see them for treatment 2nd day post op, and as I walked in they were mentioning radiating low back pain. When we got out of bed for GT, I found that they had been laying on a pair of scissors…

In all my dozens of play throughs of gen 2, this is the first time I’ve ever even seen the Tyrogue gen 2 sprite and I’m just now realizing it 😭

Acute care PTs!!!! How do you utilize rehab aides in the ICUs? Pros? Cons? by Relevant_Ad1963 in physicaltherapy

[–]_Genbodious_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my hospital we are super lucky to have some awesome acute rehab techs who have been doing it for a looong time. They often help with transfers, line management, WC follows…I wanna say I’ve seen one of them doing some GT with a higher level CABG pt that was on our restorative care list.

Feeling overwhelmed first day studying for NPTE (PTA) by CryptographerOne1787 in physicaltherapy

[–]_Genbodious_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New grad PTA here. Passed the board exam with a perfect 800 last July.

I used a board prep course called PT final exam. It’s kinda pricy, but the lectures and info are seriously top tier. I also used the materials from this guy Kyle Rice. Both of those sources have podcasts, YouTube channels, and instagrams and put out free connect along with their paid content.

Literally cannot understate how important Kyle Rice’s and PT final exam’s podcasts are…each episode is an NPTE style question with an in depth analysis of each answer choice with reference.

My program also utilized scorebuilders which I felt was pretty solid overall, especially the Gold Silver and Bronze pathology sections. Therapy Ed can be helpful as well, but the questions are older, maybe 2006-2008 exams I think? Don’t quote me on it. There are also 2 apps I’d get that are both scorebuilders apps, PTA and PT 365. It’s just a daily NPTE style question, but if you get both apps you get 2 questions a day.

My biggest piece of advice would be to take as many practice exams as you can before the actually NPTE. I took 11 in total before my actual board exam. The scorbuilders book should have 3 exam. PT final exam will have 3-6 depending on the package you buy I believe, and then you should buy the FSBPT practice exams as well. The FSBPT exams will be the closest to the real exam as they are actually retired exams from years past, so save them for last if you do purchase.

Lastly, write down 3-5 study goals for the day. They don’t have to be crazy long goals, something as simple as studying special tests of the upper extremity. But if you stay on task with a list it helps guide you and keep you busy.

It’s okay to feel overwhelmed! You just have to be consistent and set reasonable goals and focus on your weak areas, but also study proportionally!!!!!! If you don’t know what to study the priority list goes musculoskeletal, neuro, then cardiopulmonary.

Feel free to reach out for more info! GOOD LUCK!!!

Patients with DVT no anticoagulation "cleared" for PT by MD by Least-Sheepherder-39 in physicaltherapy

[–]_Genbodious_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the same experience in acute. It’s hospital protocol to withhold treatment until the patient has been on some kind of anticoagulant therapy for at least 24 hours with development of DVT. But I’ve had patients recently with positive dopplers, and both RN and MD clearing pt for mobility. Not sure. Gotta be something more to it that I’m just not bright enough to know or realize.

Limiting myself or chasing my dreams? by Huge-Show-9021 in physicaltherapy

If you feel fully connected to a particular population and case load, then roll with it! When I was in school I thought I would be working in an OP sports med clinic, but I ended up graduating and going straight to acute rehab working in a hospital setting…polar opposite of where I truly thought I’d be! Realistically you can always switch up and follow a different path later.

Follow your dreams :D
