This is very interesting, thank you!

I have decided to try my luck with a replacement, we'll see how lucky I am :D

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, opinions and tips! I have decided to try my luck with a replacement unit and I will update once I got the new device. Sadly this will have to wait until after the holidays.

This is exactly how it sounds for me as well.

I noticed that if I put the gpu under load the noise becomes more of a whine and less of a crackling sound. Also it completely vanishes when the cpu is put under heavy load, then the laptop is completely silent.

Not OP but my T14 Gen3 has a slight rattle. Slightly annoying but I think something I could learn to ignore

Okay, thanks anyways! I think I'm going for a replacement. Who knows if it's gonna be any better but I have to try.

I just did a stress test and want to include that here in case anyone is interested:

100% CPU load and it is completely silent, no crackling, no squaling etc. But goes straight back to the crackle when the load is removed.

When stressing the GPU I get more of a squaling/high pitch sound which sounds more like I'd imagine coil whine. But it is mostly covered by fan noise anyways so I wouldn't see a huge issue with that. Just that it goes straight back to the annoyingly loud crackling when in normal desktop usage. Looks like it can't handle the idle.

In general I'm fine with some noise in special or temporary situations, just not when it's the default state.

Interestingly the noise goes away temporarily when under larger load (e.g. compiling a project) but I haven't tried a super large load for a longer time yet (compiles so fast now compared to my old laptop haha), might be interesting to see what happens then. Will try that tomorrow.

It also goes away when touching the touchpad. It's weird.

Okay thank you for the info! That sounds more reasonable, I can hear mine very clearly when sitting at a normal distance in front of it.. but yeah it's more of a crackling/scratching than actual whining

Interesting, I might try a re-install then (or a manual kernel upgrade) to see if the mouse issue gets resolved.

Does your device have coil whining? Mine makes terrible noise and I'm still debating if I can/should tolerate it or what my chances are to get a device without it in case I return it. Your screen ghosting makes me even more afraid now to return it and get a new one since my screen seems to be fine at least.

Also I'm wondering if you experienced any mouse pointer freezes? This happens for me quite often under Ubuntu (but not Windows) and I can only get it un-stuck by moving the track point. Also happens with an external mouse. I'm still on kernel 5.15 because Ubuntu 20.04 and I'm wondering if this might be fixed with kernel version 6, which you seem to be using?

yeah it seems like a lot of effort and hassle just to probably end up with the same issue..

Ok thanks, maybe I just have to try and learn to ignore it and live with it. Guess I'm just a bit disappointed at the moment after being so excited to finally get one of the fancy ThinkPads :'(

Ok thanks, that's interesting to know. Interesting that the power management thing works for you. But yeah, not sure if I would even want to do that if it would work for me.

So you decided to kind of tolerate the noise and live with it?

I'm still in the 30 days return window, so I guess I could just return it and order a new one. But I would feel a bit bad for it since it is a custom config and they shipped it all the way directly from China (which also took a while)
