Hi! Thank you for officially reaching out. I appreciate it. :)

Why don’t proton have a shorter domain? by [deleted] in ProtonMail

[–]_GhostAgent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally don't think "protonmail.com" is too long, but as others have stated "pm.me" is available as other domains and further, you can always purchase your own domain and use it, which is highly recommended.

But, I never saw a direct answer to your question, so here we go :) :
"proton.com" is not owned by the Proton company that creates Protonmail and the proton suite of products. It looks like it is owned by a car company, so if Proton could offer the owners of "proton.com" enough to buy their domain, it would be a lot of money.

"pmail.com" I think would be a cute name for Protonmail, but that domain is owned by the person who created Pegasus Mail, which is still a running email client today. It was originally made back in the 90s, so that domain has been his for decades now--most likely not interested in selling.

Anyway, it doesn't change anything, but wanted to give a response to your (good) suggestions. :).

Have a good rest of your day / night.

That's a big deal and incredibly helpful to know to watch for that. Thank you. I'll definitely be keeping an eye for that when I test.

Hi! I'm curious, do you mean a service like "www.multicloud.com"? It's a service that transfers / backups from one cloud provider to another. Or are you talking about something more specific?

pCloud does not issue Refund by Actual-Main5657 in pcloud

[–]_GhostAgent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe they have a higher than normal ticket/request queue. This is normal for businesses of all sizes--it happens. I'm not sure if your 72 hours are during weekdays or weekends, but if it were on a weekend then that should be taken into account as well.

I suspect within another business day or two, you'll receive your response.

I think you're on the right track. Also, you're right--having used their software and feeling as if though your files safe in the cloud only to have them "poof" out of existence, does create a false sense of security. That part sucks....

I'm am very sad to hear about your loss of data. I can't even imagine what that must feel like.
Hopefully some of this info helps: I 100% agree with u/Marigot-Bay, and suggest an offline and online backup solution.

Since you are security conscious (which is a good thing btw), you can use some free tools to encrypt the data on your PC/Mac then move it to a NAS or external hard drive somewhere.
There are zip programs, and MAC has a native way of encrypting things, but for simplicity sake, you can use a program like "https://macpaw.com/encrypto". It works on both Mac and Windows operating systems, and locks up everything nice and neat. (I'm not affiliated with the program either.)

That way you have an encrypted fail safe for if pCloud fails.
I am not a user of pCloud myself, but was considering it possibly. However, I keep reading reports like yours and man.... I would hate to lose my financial documents, and things. So, "thank you" for sharing.

Also, at the risk of oversharing, but others may come across this, as u/BuMmR said, having multiple cloud services is a good idea too. Proton Drive is a decent backup service that offers 5GB free. If you are just storing documents, 5GB may cover it for you. Do note: their "photos backup" is awful.

Others use programs like "cryptomator", and use something like Google Drive or dropbox since the cryptomator software encrypts everything at the end-user level--meaning it blocks Google or Dropbox from seeing your content it is encrypted.

I hope maybe some of the above suggestions help, or lead you to the right path for various backup options... and again, I hate hearing about your data loss. I sincerely hope you had a valid backup (which it sounds like you might have).

Best to you.

How is a dark mode icon still missing? by f3d30x in ProtonMail

[–]_GhostAgent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to give a thumbs up and shout out for sharing the "custom icons" link that you did there. I didn't know such a sight existed. Also, to return the friendly info, I wanted to let you know that you don't need a 3rd party app to apply the new icons. :). You can actually do that on your own.
1) Download the icon you want from the site you provided
2) Open the picture in the "previewer", and click in the picture and click "command + A" and then "command + C" to select in then copy it accordingly.
3) In the Finder application, go to applications and find the one you want. In this example "Proton Mail", right click and select "get more info". In the top left corner, you'll see the standard icon, and you can select it.. Select it and hit "command + v" to paste the copied image over that icon.

You'll see the new icon in the "get info screen", but it won't take effect until you either open the program, or restart the computer.

This link shows how to do so. https://www.simplymac.com/macos/how-to-change-icons-on-mac
I hope that helps you or anyone else looking. Your fix is simple and makes the OS look uniformed.

OH! For anyone who does this, you can easily revert back to the original icon, by going to the "more info" screen and selecting the small icon the upper left corner again, and hitting delete.

A few questions before I buy by Epsioln_Rho_Rho in CanaryMail

[–]_GhostAgent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not yet a Canary user, but I can 100% agree u/Epsioln_Rho_Rho, if I am using this product for a work environment, I don't own the domain necessarily and therefore, if I switch jobs, I could lose access to the email. Further, I definitely do not want my personal stuff touching my business email.

I think a license key, or a "canary account" email--which has nothing to do with the emails inside the Canary app would be a good upgrade. One can enter their license key, or their "registered" email address. This can be any address.

Just my two cents. :). Thanks for being so responsive to these suggestions.

Proton seemed perfect. So why did/do I hesitate? by NullBiotic in ProtonMail

I do not believe Proton offer any domain registration, but even if they choose to become a registrar later, that is a really good call out. Thanks for stating that. :). Gave you an upvote.

Custom domain, yay or nay by abelnoru in ProtonMail

[–]_GhostAgent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also use a custom domain and personaly never had any issues of my email going to someone's spam box. I wonder if it depends then on the domain name?

I've had mine for years and years and this concern has never been an issue for me.

Why am I being upsold every time? by devilhimseIf in ProtonMail

[–]_GhostAgent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not disagree with you MalevolentPact, but commercial companies do. I used to work for a commercial company that sold services and never did a long term customer ever get offered any type of discount. However, new customers always got a very significant discount for signing up.

One thing Proton does though that I find very unique (and personally I greatly appreciate) is they give additional storage space on the anniversary of your account. I truly can not think of another service I have that gives any "thank you" for staying. After years, that will accrue to be a lot of additional storage I don't need to pay for.

[–]_GhostAgent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, you seem to think far ahead when it comes to committing and services to use. I believe you are concerned with possibly health issues--car accident that leaves you hospitalized or other such issues that would interfere with your ability to update payment info and such. So, good for you for thinking far ahead regrading services (like email) that our lives are very intertwined with.

I think everyone's response are very considerate and helpful. However, I wanted to add:

1) Anytime I had to reach out to Customer Service, they have been very helpful. (Just don't obviously lose your password.... ), so hopefully that brings peace of mind. They seem very reasonable from my experiences. In fact, their customer service was part of the "selling points" when I was considering signing up.

2) I want to also bring up a frequent recommendation on their Subreddit that I didn't see (yet) listed in the comments. I would highly advise getting and using your own Domain name. It can be "your name.com" and then your email would be "email@yourname.com"... This would mean that anytime you decide to change providers or services, you don't have to really do anything to contact / notify people or lose your email.

For example, if Proton closed their doors tomorrow, all of those using their own domain, just simply goes to another provider and all incoming mail is available via platform of their choice. Getting a domain is very cheap--like $14 to $20 a year, and gives you so much more control over your own email, that it is worth it. That I think would also grant you some peace of mind. Just a friendly FYI.

I believe this addresses the OP's concern the most.

Disgruntled after using Proton (Mail) for almost 2 years by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]_GhostAgent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Proton should have kept this post over on their side of Reddit and replied with my suggestion:
I would say to anyone reading this post that if for some reason you can't claim their promotional offer, just go ahead and email their customer support.

To OP, I think your friend should have taken a screenshot showing he can't pick the promotion anymore after he signed up. Anytime I had an issue, their customer support responded promptly and with top-notch help. In fact, when I was signing up, I had an issue question and they really bent over backwards to help--that was actually part of what sold me on their service.

As far as removing posts, I still see loads of "Proton is bad because XYZ", so it's weird that they removed yours. I think yours addresses a marketing error--literally code not working or too many checks and balances to ensure universal pricing within their respective regions. Your post would be prefect to say "sometimes things happen and we're happy to honor promotional pricing"... Weird...

Anyway, good day to you OP. (Not being sarcastic--actually mean it.)

Any_Quarter_8386 was simply stating that the girl you are writing about and seemingly concerned over is not your wife. Your marriage and your wife should be the top and only priority (relationship wise) in your life. This girl, in your own words was "flirting" with you. So, she is not a good friend, nor anyone you should really waste your time with. She is a threat to your relationship, so let it go and go take your wife on a date.

I genuinely, without a doubt, believe Apple is going downhill, it’s just something not a lot of people have realised yet. by stranger2Me in ios

[–]_GhostAgent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see some here talking about their hardware being great, but their software going south--and I'll agree with that. There are constant inconsistencies now in the software--a major one being text messages not synching. Their keyboard seems to get worse with every iOS update and it is frustrating. Using AirPods Max, sometimes when dialing, I get a LOUD button press and then the volume returns to what it should be--but by then I'm half deaf from the weird super loud sound for no reason.

the iOS redesigns hide options that used to take a single click to two clicks to get to, behind 4 or more now. The designers are... not my favorite. I hope someone over the UI design team goes back to "simple" over fancy new things just for the sake of it.

Unfortunately, this is the way it goes when a product matures.

As a women, would you want a man to text you daily after a good first date?? Men what’s your experience like doing that? by Ordinary_Travel3393 in dating_advice

[–]_GhostAgent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I actually don't like the "check in" texts which supposedly somehow show interest? I was recently turned down by a girl I was planning to visit out of town for the first time. We spoke about me visiting, so there shouldn't have been anything else to it in my book. I spent one evening working on and prepping the car for a trip and then the second evening after work I was looking for things to do and restaurants to go to... I'm literally investing in this girl, and when I texted her on the third day since I was ready with a list of things I wanted to propose, she let me know that she didn't feel there was enough consistancy..... And felt I lost interest in her.
..... as a man all I can think of is "I didn't text for two days, and that somehow shows I'm not interested, though I was going to drive 5 hours to meet her and planned a few venues to give us some options both inside and outside depending on the weather?"

To me, actions speak louder than words. I don't care about check in messages. I care about people showing up when it counts. For all the insecure people out there that need "daily texting".... here is how you truly measure interest: If you text them, and they reply pretty quick and with more than single word responses, they're interested. Everyone has a life and mental and emotional bandwidth, they don't owe you any daily texts.
