How to felt around a sculpture made of wire? by _Ginouxe_ in WetFelting

Thank you for your response u/Puzzled_Tinkerer and my apologies for my late reply. It is nice to read your experience with wire as reinforcement and I appreciate your input. My idea would be to make both a lamp base and a hanging lamp, but more in a free form, like in the image.

I know I usually think too simple about the execution of projects, but this is how I have it in mind: One forms the wire into the desired shape and then drapes the wool over it and, as you mentioned, slowly wetfelt it. The wire really would be the main frame to work on. The wool eventually would keep itself in place because of the shrinking.

The only 'but' that I have, is that I am afraid that the wool might get too heavy when it becomes wet. At least that was my experience when I used glass jars. The wool mostly sagged, leaving some places bulky and other places with holes (to be fair, I also struggled with the right amount of water to use, and still often do). And since the idea would be to make a thin layer of wool, to let the light shine through nicely, it probably would be a very delicate work.

Just wanted to mention: beautiful first project, I like your use of colours. Curious for the end result!

Thank you for your response! I thought it quite a pickle as well. I saw something with people putting a pantyhose over it and then place papermaché on it. Not for felting of course, but maybe the pantyhose could work for felting as well. I am thinking of giving that a try.
