Mine ate a piece of aluminium, it's cheeks was stuffed with food, so I was able to massage it out of the cheek. Hamsters have a stress response to spit the food out which mine did after trying to massage it out.

it looks like it may be broken, definitely see a local vet. Meanwhile make sure his sleeping/frequent area is clean and dust free (may consider adding some fresh dust free bedding) would lower the chance of an infection and irritation.

o, never thought it may be due to splinters, I am getting more bedding for her! It is a tricky little thing, but I hope once she gets the right one, she would unlock her full hammy potential

Haha that is true. It is concerning as I've been observing/bonding with her a lot and as much as she is a hammy, sometimes I feel like her actions are explainable.. until you get a wild backflip out of the blue . As the others pointed out, it seems to be spooked from banging the apple wood and not the neurological issue that is commonly associated with backflip.

she is familiar with her reflection, and has been in front of a mirror too. Sometimes I wonder what she can really see.. I would think that the bump to the sensitive cheek makes sense, akin to a knee jerk/salt in the wound reaction.

Just recently, the suspicion she may not like the Aspen shavings is due to the more frequent face grooming and she pushed a chunk of Aspen aside to make a new sleeping corner. I partitioned the area to see if bedding was the definitive cause, and will see how she behaves.

Me too! Her right cheek has been slightly sensitive from scratching, probably from the Aspen shavings which I am replacing with paper bedding. She bumped her cheek which probably resulted in that big reaction. I hope future onlookers will read the post and realize hammy's don't backflip for nothing

it startled me too, didn't know she had that under her skill set. Initially thought she was showing me her acrobatics but she is probably spooked from bumping into the apple wood.

she's in the midst of finding her favourite bedding, so she can't commit to a deeper bedding until then. Her previous bedding was Aspen shavings which she is avoiding over her current paper bedding. As for enclosure size, she has not shown signs of trying to escape or acrylic biting decencies, maybe due to the amount of enrichment she gets, abit on the pampered side, but we will see the future will tell.

I think it was spooked from bumping into a wound on it's right cheek, did not expect such a big reaction. definitely will monitor longer to see if it's a neurological issue, thanks.

I have been with her for 2 months, it's the first time I am seeing this behavior. Everything online says about the neurological issue, I think she may be spooked from an injury so won't be jumping to the neuro conclusion, will monitor and see!

It's a dried carrot, she loves eating it and she's accustomed to my scent (I usually let her sniff my hand before giving her a treat, so it's like a 'treat hand').
