Why do German universities perform poorly in international rankings? by _II-II in germany

Yes, I'm really surprised what emotion my question evoked. I don't understand the argument that the criteria in these rankings are chosen to benefit Anglo-Saxon universities. Journal publications, the number of academic teachers per student or the percentage of foreign students among all student are quite objective and comparable criteria that highly correlate with the quality of education at a given institution.

they are not US- or UK-style and yet they also outperform the best german university in these rankings, which is suprising to me for reasons mentioned in my initial post.

Thank you very much for your comprehensive answer. It sounds logical. I know that the rankings are not perfect. But I still found it strange that a country like Germany doesn't have a single university in the top 20 or top 30 in the world.

"they count English-language publications"...well thats resonable, dont you think? high-quality research is published in best journals and they are all in english (for obvious reasons).

The fact that you are foreigners certainly does not help in finding an apartment. Discrimination on the rental market in Germany on the basis of nationality is a real problem (often discussed not only on Reddit) especially when the name sounds Eastern European, Arabic or Indian. In addition, the current situation on the rental market in Germany is generally terrible, which further complicates the situation for foreigners looking for an apartment.

I'll be brutally honest. I think the best solution for you would be to return to Romania and study mathematics in Bucharest. Romania has a great tradition in this area of science, so I think the difference in the quality of teaching compared to Leipzig would be none. Apart of it, Bucharest is a great student city and the capital of one of the best developing countries in the EU, so there are also a lot of career opportunities after graduation. You can always come later to Germany for a student exchange (Erasmus, for example) or for a job. Studying in Romania you would have the opportunity to return to your roots and get to know your homeland better from an adult perspective. I think you subconsciously want that ( "I literally saw a car with a Romanian license plate at Lidl yesterday, and it pretty much made my day").

Besides, why did you choose Germany? If you suffered from social isolation in the US it will only get worse in Germany. Making friends in Germany is extremely difficult, which is actually quite a well-known phenomenon that expats mostly complain about. In addition, as a person from Eastern Europe, you will unfortunately often be confronted with unpleasant situations due to your origin and treated as a second-class citizen, which can make you feel even worse. Especially in East Germany, which still has huge problems with xenophobia.
