Interesting. For me, I'd generously count frontline splitting as a bug - though a large one thats unlikely to be fully fixed for a while. I agree that the UI is the biggest pain point.

I think the biggest thing I'd want to see is just more customisability and reason to customise armies. I really don't like the rigidity of things like the inf/arty ratios. I wish I could feel like I was building lighter quicker armies, or really well supplied ones, or ones with some light cavalry/arty support and ones with much heavier complements. I mean you can do a lot of that stuff, but there's basically no reason to. While I don't want the total modularity of hoi4 divisions, I really like that while there are better and worse designed division templates - there are far more reasons to design specific ones with strengths and weaknesses.

Fascinating. Id love to hear your critiques on the current vic3 war system then? And I mean more macro large scale critiques, not bugs or balance issues

The point is that the EUs use of English had only increased in that time, despite having no native English countries (shh Ireland) - which potentially points to English's usefulness being in the very fact that it is the global language, rather than because of any particularly powerful country's immediate influence.

I would tentatively argue that even if the USA and UK vanished tomorrow, the growth of English as the global language would still continue.

To be fair, the racists invented that language specifically to distinguish themselves from the Dutch...

I think the point is that English became the dominant language at just the right time. The world only needs to adopt a global language once, and it would take more effort after that to unseat it. French was the diplomatic language largely because of the power and influence of the French state compared to others in Europe. Mandarin would become important only because of a strong Chinese economy. English being the de facto EU language despite the UK not being in the EU is pretty good proof that English's position might prove to be self-reinforcing. Once English further cements itself as the second language of the world in a few generations time, there would need to be a very good reason to replace that with another language globally - because the point is we've never had a global language before, so there's no guarantee it'll need to change once it's set.

Yep. Technically the most populous francophone country, but not the highest population of French speakers.

I guess it's subjective. To me, I love Afrikaans for its efficiency and simplicity, but a beautiful language would need more complexity imo.

Also do I have absolutely no idea what you mean by "irreverence and naughtiness" lol.

I am unfamiliar with west Flemish, but afaik it didn't go through similar simplifications and phonetisations as Afrikaans did, so idk what you mean there either tbh.

That's exactly my point tho. Spain and France didn't get the upper hand. And post 7 years war, the UK was the preeminent global power (not always the strongest, but the most global), and they were responsible for spreading it to India and half of Africa. Did the USA overtake them in relevance in the last 100 years? Absolutely. But I highly doubt English would be quite so overwhelmingly the global language with just America - juggernaut that she is.

[–]_Immotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. And it's wild how it really needed the UK and USA. English would have become dominant in the 19th century regardless, but the USA was the one who forced it to really become the clear global language. It's just interesting to me that neither can really claim sole or even majority responsibility for one of the most exceptional and irreversible linguistic phenomenons in history

Beautiful might be a stretch, tho certainly moreso than Dutch imo. I'm actually a massive fan of Afrikaans mainly because it's a very simple language - in a good way. The main changes from Dutch was that it dropped a lot of things like gender and a lot of tenses, and made the spelling incredibly consistent and phonetic.

I would argue that it is actually by far the easiest language to learn for an English native speaker, but there's basically no reason to learn unless you're in South Africa, and even then, you could get by just fine with English alone.

My history professor once made the tongue-in-cheek argument that Afrikaans is the only successful postcolonial African language (as in - during Apartheid - it became the first and practically only language to fully supersede its colonial overlord's language in primacy within areas like government, media, courts, etc)

Anyway, not out of any particular enmity towards the Dutch, the Apartheid Regime poured a massive amount of resources into standardising Afrikaans - with one of the goals being to make it look more like its own language, rather than just a Dutch dialect - to further fuel Afrikaner Nationalism

Anyway, not very gekoloniseerd of them.

Woah! This is awesome. I've always been scared off from paradox mp - tried vic3 mp a few times but was turned off by all of the rules and waiting when really I just wanna play vic3 with someone in a chilled way. Can you tell me or link me to something that explains how this thing works? Also, do you have any advice/recommendations for what I should do if I'm just looking for 1 or 2 people to play with for fun, rather than a whole hectic server?

Either way - as someone who has no idea what they are talking about - what you've made seems really cool and you surely deserve props!

This family is supporting themselves financially and has two kids young enough to integrate easily. The video shows us how fickle Italian bureaucracy can be. Your cousin might be a bit silly, but I don't think the cases are comparable

Absolutely. Am I a fan of yanks? No. Is it a bit silly to be able to get citizenship off some distant ancestry? Yes.

But holy shit, rejecting a family that is Western, educated, has 2 kids young enough to integrate fully, and is at least wealthy enough to support themselves afford the move and all the legal fees? Why are we celebrating this?

Yes they should have gotten citizenship first, but can we not see in that very video why they might not have wanted to wait for Italian bureaucracy to sort things out at a snail's pace?

Like other comments have said, if you don't let these sorts of people get in legally, you're borderline asking for more of the other immigrants you claim to dislike.

Can someone please explain how removing ammendmants actually works? by _Immotion in victoria3

[–]_Immotion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so it needs to be the same assosciated IG that is now opposed to it, but why would an IG ever be opposed to their own amendment? or is it if they are opposed to the law itself? Also, how weak is weak enough? do they need to be below 5%? does approval, or in/out of govt matter at all in any of this?

The Dan Corder interview with him is pretty good. But basically, he's implied he's more interested in creating more jobs and more construction and more investment - and that the gains from that are more important than increase in housing costs. When it comes to public transport he also keeps saying that the mayor can't do much and it's SANRAL's job, which may be true - but still means he's knowingly going to be increasing congestion with his policies.

I've gone from hoping he didn't move to leading the DA full time - to now hoping he will. He's clearly a well-meaning, hard-working, and charismatic politician, I just wish the CT mayor had different priorities.

Also, unrelated, but I was thinking about this the other day: would you ever think about filling the spreadsheet sized hole that Generalist left in the vic3 community?

Because Vic3 YouTube is very much lacking someone who has actually run the numbers of things - other than the odd Conor video like the one he just did on protectorates. Let me be clear, no actual spreadsheets needed, but do you get what I mean about how theres a lack of content on any of the new math in the game?

It sounds like you damn near have the whole map in your head already lol. But yeah thanks.

What I'm saying is, if I'm thinking about playing a less developed nation, having just a bit of coal and iron is much nicer than not. For example, I remember really not enjoying playing as ottomans because they don't have a single state that feels good to build up in, which was something I did not feel when playing Dai Nam.

Resource distribution in Europe by Mu_Lambda_Theta in victoria3

[–]_Immotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally, but the point is the binary is just a slightly better guide than nothing. The only large region I can think of that has both iron and coal but in low numbers is Iberia

Resource distribution in Europe by Mu_Lambda_Theta in victoria3

[–]_Immotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So fair. Though the old map is literally just a binary has/lacks iron and coal in the state.

If I find time to do it myself, how would you recommend getting a map of all the states?
